Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. answers questions about a report involving his brother Jonathan outside his house in Chicago, Friday, Dec. 12, 2008. As calls for the impeachment Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich intensified,, the Chicago Tribune reports in a story for Friday's editions, citing unnamed sources, that businessman Raghuveer Nayak and Blagojevich aide Rajinder Bedi told attendees at an Oct. 31 meeting that they needed to raise the money for the governor to ensure Jackson's appointment. The Oct. 31 meeting led to a Blagojevich fundraiser held Saturday that was co-sponsored by Nayak. The governor attended, as did Jackson's brother Jonathan, who went into business with Nayak several years ago, according to the newspaper report. (AP Photo/Paul Beaty)

CHICAGO — A fundraiser held by Indian-American businessmen three days before Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich was arrested on corruption charges emerged Friday as a potentially key event in the federal investigation into whether he tried to sell President-elect Barack Obama's vacant Senate seat.

Questions are being raised about last Saturday's event for Blagojevich because Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr.'s brother, Jonathan, was among those attending. The Indian community has a long history of supporting the Jackson family's political aspirations, and the congressman has been clear about his interest in succeeding Obama.

Rep. Jackson, however, flatly denied that he or his brother were involved in a scheme for Blagojevich to peddle the Senate seat in return for up to $1.5 million in political contributions.

The congressman also said neither his brother nor his father, the Rev. Jesse Jackson, served as any kind of emissary for discussions with the governor.

"Clearly, a scheme had been hatched in the mind of the governor," Jackson said.

The Chicago Tribune reported Friday that some of the businessmen who gathered at the Dec. 6 fundraiser discussed the prospect of raising at least $1 million for the governor in return for Jackson getting the Senate seat.

Iftekhar Shareef, former president of the Federation of Indian Associations and a prominent businessman, said he attended the fundraiser and sat at the same table as the governor, Jonathan Jackson and at least two prominent Indian businessmen.

Nobody discussed the Senate seat at the table, Shareef said.

"Honestly, I never saw if there was any talk about Jesse Jr.'s Senate seat or anything," Shareef said. "Who knows? It might be among themselves."

Blagojevich was arrested at his home Tuesday, one day after he met with Jackson for 90 minutes to discuss Jackson's interest in the seat. The congressman has been identified as "Senate Candidate 5" in the federal complaint against Blagojevich.

Jackson said Blagojevich never promised him the Senate seat. "Far from it," he told The Associated Press. "It was clear from the reading of the complaint, my candidacy never had a chance under his process."

Any scheme to win Jackson the appointment may have been hatched shortly before Oct. 31, according to the complaint.

During a recorded conversation that day, the governor recalled "an earlier approach" by an associate of Senate Candidate 5: "We were approached 'pay to play.' That, you know, he'd raise me 500 grand. An emissary came. Then the other guy would raise a million, if I made him a senator."

The Tribune reported that Blagojevich made an appearance at an Oct. 31 luncheon at the India House restaurant in suburban Schaumburg, an event sponsored by businessman Raghuveer Nayak.

Ravi Rawat, manager of the India House restaurant, said there were 35 participants at the luncheon and that Nayak paid the bill. He said he was unaware of what was discussed at the closed-door session, though Shareef said it was held to plan last week's Blagojevich fundraiser.

According to state campaign finance reports, Nayak and his company, Rogers Park One Day Surgi-Center, gave $117,000 to Blagojevich's campaign fund from 2001 through November 2006.

Raghuveer and Anita Nayak also contributed $20,300 to Jackson's campaigns from 2000 to 2008, Federal Election Commission documents indicate.

At least two other businessmen and a Blagojevich aide identified as being part of Saturday's fundraiser have donated to Blagojevich and Jackson, sometimes with their wives.

Harish and Renuka Bhatt have given $86,000 to Blagojevich, including $4,000 from the Association of Indian Pharmacists, which lists the same address as Bhatt.

Blagojevich has also received $18,500 from Babu Patel or his firm, Patel Realty, from 2000 through June. Patel gave $1,000 to Jackson in 2007. Blagojevich aide Rajinder Bedi gave Jackson $500 between 2005 and 2008.

According to Shareef, both Nayak and Bedi sat with the governor and Jonathan Jackson during the fundraiser.

Messages left with Nayak, the Bhatts, Patel and Bedi were not returned Friday.

On Dec. 4, two days before the fundraiser, prosecutors say Blagojevich told someone identified only as "Adviser B" that he was giving Jackson greater consideration for the seat because, "among other reasons," he would raise money for a Blagojevich re-election run and might even provide some cash upfront.

In another taped call, Blagojevich said he was elevating Jackson on his list of candidates because he "might be able to cut a deal" that could give the governor "something tangible up front."

"Blagojevich noted he was going to meet with 'Senate Candidate 5' in the next few days," the complaint says.

In fact, the governor and Jackson met to discuss the Senate seat four days later, on Monday. Blagojevich was arrested at his home the next morning.

Many of our modern leaders of "safe" gerrymandered districts are so entrenched that they are unaccountable to any except their own vanities and thirst for broadened power.
Congressman Jessie Jackson Jr. earned his position the easy way---through inheritance. Allegedly, he intended to obtain the Senatorial seat the easy way---buy it.
Thus, is the eternal story of the result of gaining American political positions by inheritance rather than by merit and competence. Gradually, dynastic rule replaces earned rewards for outstanding performance. We can safely say that the American future will be written with great dynasties as was true in Ancient Egypt and China and Rome. And the society will be peopled with an indispensible leader, an obsequious bureaucracy, and a mulitude of powerless peons.

Why are people ignorantly speculating and trying to sully the life's work of this man and his father??? What do any of you ignoramuses know that Federal investigators don't???
Stop tr@shing this family and dragging them through the gutter this way! Have you even questioned the TIMING of the U.S. attorney's indictment. This man's career is being railroaded so that the Obama "fluke or mistake" of him ascending to the Presidency never happens again with another black man!

Isn't it obvious???? The radicals on the right don't want another black man in the Senate just to be on the safe side should he too one day aspire to the Presidency!

This man's career hangs in the balance! Based on what???? Hypothesis! Speculation! The angry, bitter ramblings of Gov. Blago on tape???

Why should this man, his career and his family suffer when there is absolutely no proof whatsoever that he did anything wrong??? What kind of people tear a man down this way without a shred of evidence???

This is sickening behaviour on the part of the media, talking heads and posters here. Shame on all of you!!!!!

I echo the exact sentiments! We will truly have to appreciate the ride with Prez Elect Obama, as there is a slim chance of us seeing this happening agian. By all accounts, it would have been great to see Obama's postion held by another African American, especially someone of a young generation. Heavan alone knows, we need more of the new generation in politics not the old guard Macain /Palin type that divide our nation and play old kind of politics. The media should focus on the disgraceful conduct of the governor not "innocent until proven guilty" Jackson. If the gov was black and Jackson white, the media would be all over the governor and barely give Jackson a thought. Obama is too sqeauky clean, so the media has to generate dirt to "taint" his image. One just has to watch Campbell Brown on CNN with her ad nauseaum "but did Obama give enough answers, what is he not telling us blah blah blah......cr$p! Posters need to read and listen to the media with a critical eye and ear and not swallow everything they hear and read...

I am so sick of even seeing the "clothes-pin nose" face of Gov. "Blag-son-of-a-b****"!!
How dare he & his B.S take the positive attention off P.E Obama who is trying hard to get this country thru these awful times. I don't know which governor is more annoying, him or Palin!! I guess him, since no hypes been made over Palin's deeds. I hope Jesse Jr. comes out of this unscaithed. I really like him.

Was Jessie Jr set up for this fall because Blago didn't want him.
DID THE FUNDRAISER TO THE POLITICAL STARS ACT ALONE IN THIS OR WAS HE ASKED TO DO WHAT EVER IS NECESSARY TO GET IT DONE. tHESE ARE MY LEGAL/MORAL QUESTIONS.
I really do not believe JJ JR asked Nayak, to do all that he did,

ChicagoSuz,

Let me help disperse the confusion...
Jesse Jackson Jr is Candidate 5.
Someone wanting Candidate 5 to get the seat offered Blago between .5 and 1 million dollars in campaign contributions.
Jesse Jackson's "allies" were raising that money last week.

whether or not Jesse Jackson is guilty of anything those two allies are...

The thing I find most hilarious about all this scheming for campaign funds is that once Blago got indicted (and he was going to be sooner or later even without these new schemes), the next play in the Fitzgerald playbook would have been to freeze his campaign funds. He wouldn't have been able to use them to fund his defense, and, unlike Ryan, he won't do well at raising a legal defense fund or getting someone to defend him pro bono. Maybe if his wife really worked instead of picking up occasional shady commisions, they wouldn't be so stressed over money right now.

The facts are being all mis construed on this one I believe, First the Obama connection is thin to me, it was his seat, and as President he can make recommendations tht the governor can accept or not.
Additionally, Alot of what I am hearing is normal Politics, I will help you with such n such in your district if you help me with such n such in my district type stuff,
The illegal part is any potential direct payment ot the Gov to receive preferential treatment. or consideration for the Vacated Senate Seat. Blago is in trouble for directlly indicating he wanted moeny upfront, and a potential position for he and his wife, as direct personal gain. as well as the brow beating of the childrens hospital for manipulation of public funds.that is the illegal part i am seeing.
AS FAR AS THE FUNDS RAISER MENTIONED HERE, i MUST AM CONCERNED AS TO wheterh JJ Jr asked the guy Nayak, to negotiate on his bahalf, and this was his approved solution, then JJ Jr is and shoudl be toast, if not let him be. as people were moving without his knowledge or approval.

.

The problem with "my aides acted without my consent" excuse is that it gives politicians and white collar criminals a blank for wrong doing, providing the aides are willing to tough it out.

In the military, the commanding officer is responsible for the behavior of his crew. It's the same thing in this situation.

If Blago has been under investigation for 5 years and everyone in IL politics knows he's corrupt, I'm finding it difficult to imagine JJ Jr doing any kind of business with the shake down artist.

I'm praying JJ Jr gets cleared of this mess. He seems like a decent kid that wants to make a difference.

I would like to think that this was part of a plan to cinch the case against Blago. It is a lot worse to talk about selling the office and actually taking money for it.
It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Well, if they have this much after just three days, things don't look too good for Jackson. If the old saying is that where there's smoke there's fire, then here we have smoke, flying sparks and a red glow in the sky. I think there might be a fire over the next hill and after the next revelation.

The shame is that Jesse Jackson, Jr., seems like a really sincere and decent guy. These things could very well have been done on his behalf without his direct knowledge. But, I'm beginning to think that the trail will end very close to him.

Of course, in the court of public opinion JJ Jr. is done, over.

This is so sad for JJ Jr because this may come down to a few he said, he said sound bites if there is no money or memos tying JJ Jr to the scheme.
