Philip Seymour Hoffman talked to Jon Stewart Thursday night to promote his movie "Doubt," in which he plays a priest suspected of pedophilia.

Earlier in the day Hoffman was nominated for a Golden Globe for the role.

He and Stewart talked about their kids, Hoffman has three, and the controversial nature of the film. Hoffman also talked about how odd it was to play a priest.

Stewart meanwhile, thought the movie was fantastic. "I think you might get two Academy Awards for this one."

For years before he playeed Capote, whenever I saw PSH he seemed stuck in juvenile roles. When I saw him on the Daily Show, I thought he could play an aging Orson Welles: "As Paul Masson said over a hundred years ago; 'we'll sell no wine before its time.'"

Phillip Seymour Hoffman is an actor's actor.

When Hoffman comes on-screen time ceases. Big part, little part, any part at all, he dominates the moment.

I never got what all the fuss was about over Vanessa Redgrave.
Ditto for Phillip Seymour Hoffman.

I've always thought he was an amazing actor. I've read "Doubt" and wonder if the film ends the same way as the play - unanswered.

I remember seeing him in Boogie Nights and thinking he was wonderful.

Nobody can play the roles PSH plays, such as Happiness or Owning Mahowny. He is a brilliant actor and so utterly convincing in these downtrodden, mentally unstable, depressed or schlubby roles. If I was an actor, this is who I would want to be. You get great roles, but none of the tabloid & paparazzi crap that goes along with the fame because you're a normal guy that they aren't interested in for juice.

Someone on another thread suggested that he play Rove in a movie.

OHMYGD he would NAIL IT.. if nothing else, Hoffman could invent the persona we should all beware of for future reference.

Definitely a great actor, and I look forward to seeing "Doubt".

But I have to say, that shirt doesn't do him justice.

I totally agree, he needs to get some better fitting clothes, there's got to be some enterprising Big n Tall mens shop owner who could send him some properly sized shirts.

PSH a great deep actor, but someone needs to dress him and give him some Head & Shoulders.
Go, Phillip!

yeah he is truly one of the greatest actors of our time and is from the Rochester area, my hometown. So its good to have someone like him our area and at least give us some culture from the area

I went to college in Rochester, if you are referring to Rochester, NY.

agree with most of the posts here: PSH is a fantastic actor. I loved his role in Punch-Drunk Love and the character he played in Love, Liza was just heartwrenching. He seems to be a fairly humble man from this interview and I definitely think he should be more firmly recognized for all the great work he has done.

He is firmly reconized at the Banks.

Glad he's finally getting the recognition he deserves. He's one of those actors who's good in everything he does. Loved him in The Big Lebowski!

Brandt: You never went to college...

The Dude: Oh, no I did, but I spent most of my time occupying various administration buildings... smoking a lot of thai stick... breaking into the ROTC... and bowling. To tell you the truth Brandt, I don't remember most of it.

Oh, and Happy Birthday to Steve Buscemi, who turns 51 today!
05:53 PM on 12/12/2008
Brandt can't watch or he'll have to pay an extra hundred.
