CHICAGO — When President-elect Barack Obama heads home for a break from the White House, he won't go to a sprawling ranch or private seaside compound.

Obama will come back to a crowded city neighborhood, creating different security challenges for the Secret Service and perhaps headaches for his neighbors.

No other recent first family has lived in a city neighborhood like the Obamas. The $1.6 million mansion he and his wife, Michelle, share with their two young daughters sits just off a busy street _ a stretch of which has been closed to traffic _ and his closest neighbors are just a few feet away.

"My Kennebunkport is on the South Side of Chicago," Obama said in a recent interview with the Chicago Tribune. "Our friends are here. Our family is here. We are going to try to come back here as often as possible ... at least once every six weeks or couple months."

His busy South Side neighborhood affords none of the privacy of President George W. Bush's 1,600-acre Texas spread or President George H.W. Bush's seaside summer retreat in Kennebunkport, Maine. President Ronald Reagan's White House in the West was his mountaintop Rancho del Cielo in California. President Bill Clinton moved to the White House from the governor's mansion in Arkansas.

But Obama is a Chicago transplant whose campaign was rooted in the notion that he's not like the other guys, and living in an urban neighborhood near the University of Chicago is a symbol of that, said Paul Light, a presidential historian at New York University.

Obama, who owns only the one home, was even able to paint his Republican opponent, John McCain, as out of touch with voters when the Arizona senator apparently didn't know how many homes he and his multimillionaire wife owned.

Maintaining strong ties to Chicago is one way Obama can stay in touch with the people who helped him get elected, Light said. "I don't think the public will take kindly toward any sort of signal that he is somehow losing touch with the outside world, that he's trapped on island Washington," Light said.

Like other presidents, Obama is sure to spend some of his down time at Camp David, the presidential retreat on a remote Maryland mountaintop, and in Hawaii, a regular vacation spot for him and where he spent much of his childhood.

For security reasons, the Obamas' urban oasis already has changed. Their large red brick house doesn't have the benefit of being surrounded by acres of land like other presidential retreats, so the city streets near it look like a military zone with blocks-long metal and concrete barriers. Secret Service agents and police patrol the area.

But the Obamas are hardly prisoners in their home, although the family is under the constant protection of the Secret Service.

Obama visits a nearby gym nearly every morning and then travels downtown to work at his transition office or to hold news conferences. His motorcade sometimes shuttles his daughters, 10-year-old Malia and 7-year-old Sasha, to school, and he and Michelle dine out at popular Chicago eateries.

Protecting a city Western White House poses some new situations for the Secret Service, as does any venue around the world where the president and his family need to be protected.

"We would not consider it more difficult," said Agent Malcolm Wiley, a Secret Service spokesman.

And the attention to security isn't something that will end when Obama leaves office. Before former President Bill Clinton left the White House, local officials in suburban Westchester County, N.Y., approved requests from the Clintons for security additions at their new home in Chappaqua, including an 8-foot tall fence.

The tight security near Obama's home is something KAM Isaiah Israel, a landmark Chicago temple across the street, is taking in stride.

On its Web site, the temple tells visitors what to expect when coming, including ID checks on the street and possible searches of vehicles and bags.

"We have lived with and will continue to live with the security, and people have gotten used to it," said congregation president Lawrence Bloom. He said the temple continues to run a full schedule of religious services, classes and programs.

When temple officials have met with the Secret Service, agents have told them that Obama is concerned about the imposing on the neighborhood because of his tight security, Bloom said.

Bloom wonders whether Obama's street will go back to being a bit more normal when Obama is ensconced in Washington.

"We can't be sure of that," he said.

My hope is that the Obama's endorsement of the Southside will result in a revitilization of surrounding areas....maybe all the expanded security will spread out to other neighborhoods making people feel safe enough to start a migration there...

Is he planning an open house for all his neighbors? I'm sorry, I mean his pals.

I haven't talked to one person in Chicago -both in the Hyde Park neighborhood and elsewhere downtown, who has a complaint about the Obamas, the motorcade, etc. People are really proud and happy to have them here! When you live in a city like Chicago, traffic is always being rerouted for SOMETHING anyway- construction, sewer work, a parade, a public event, etc. We're used to it and no one seems to mind going a couple of blocks out of the way to help keep the Obamas safe! Besides, they will need to see their friends, go to 57th Street Books with their little girls ( seriously, one of the BEST, most charming bookstores in Chicago, and privately owned too, NOT a chain) or to get pizza at the Medici. Right now the snow is falling outside and I hope the Obama girls are getting ready to have some hot chocolate after school and decorate their Christmas tree and do all the things their family would normally do this time of year. We're proud of Obama and want his family here whenever they can come!

This thrills me to death and I'm a Southerner! Highlighting the urban midwest is so natural...not artificial.
To have a president that doesn't lock himself away on a faux ranch cutting faux brush just for faux photo ops!
REFRESHINGLY WONDERFUL!!!

PE Obama loves Chicago (just as I do). The politics can be crazy but 24 hour spin that media put's out make's it appear worse then it actually is.

But I doubt if *President* Obama will be allowed to hang out in Chicago the way that he like to. I think he feels that it keeps him connected to the people.

I also don't think he enjoys living the life of the rich and famous either...he just wants to be one of the neighbors on the block (ain't gonna happen). Those days are over.

They will probably take away his blackberry and keep him away from his home. Truth be told...his neighbors would probably be happy about that too (blocks up too many of the neighborhood streets).

Well, with all of the money from his newfound fame, maybe he could build a house in some secluded area in Chicago. Someone will eventually pay a lot of money for his house.

Now, it's coming out that Rezko helped the Obamas pay for their home......and now it's coming out that Obama's advisors DID talk to Blago. Sad to say that Obama is more involved with CHICAGO POLITICS than we all thought and that's not a good thing. BY THE TIME INAUGURATION ARRIVES, THE BLOOM WILL BE OFF THE ROSE!

He owns one home and one car, a Ford Escape wagon.

"Relaxing" is different to different people. He has a sister in Hawaii; he can go there for that kind of relaxing. I love big cities and can relax by walking downtown streets, dropping in coffee shops, book stores. The way they will be living and have lived for the past 2 years, just enjoying the comfort of your own home, your own kitchen, your own space is a treat!

All I want is his and his family's SAFETY.

Obama is a man of the people and has a real home in Chicago. It's great that he feels rooted to the community as he is going to need a lot of support to deal with Washington politics and backbiting. Keeping it real will get him through the next 8 years.
11:09 AM on 12/15/2008
The way things are going I'd say it might be Obama's Waterloo.

Maybe Obama will (gasp!) read books and debate ideas, as well as shooting hoops, with his old University of Chicago pals, instead of chopping brush on the back forty, or chasing waitresses and divorcees. This seems a healthy trend in a nation mired in the Age of Al Qaeda and Madoff. If Obama actually succeeds--my most fervent "prayer"--it will be so great watching the Archie Bunkers of America (or at least a critical mass of, say, 10% of them) actually having to concede that a Harvard degree shouldn't automatically disqualify a person from the Oval Office.

Hyde Park is a wonderful neighborhood. One of the best things about Barack's election is the loyalty he and Michelle show for the Southside. Hopefully this will communicate to people that Chicago has great neighborhoods and you don't have to live downtown or on the Northside. I grew up on the Southside in a tightly knit neighborhood with positive values and was drawn to Hyde Park because of the strong sense of community in the area. Whatever changes in the neighborhood that are necessary to keep them safe are more than okay with me. It's easy to keep folks safe living in the country or on a lot of acreage--this raises the bar for law enforcement and the Secret Service to "handle it" in an urban environment.
12:50 AM on 12/15/2008
Absolutely. Also, it's no coincidence that the Obama's live there; Hyde Park is probably home to about 70% of the black professional class in the city. His neighbors include a circuit court judge and another prominent attorney, and a well known real estate developer. The South Side has been unfairly stereotyped, IMO. But, one of the things that happened because of Chicago's segregation is that it developed a strong black professional infrastructure. Unfortunately, the MSM doesn't really talk in depth about anyting, so it's hard to understand what is going on in communities.

As much as I dislike Sarah Palin, I have to wonder how mischaracterized Wasilla has been, given the way Hyde Park is portrayed.
10:57 AM on 12/15/2008
It wasn't mischaracterized...I am sure you can go to Youtube and see pics of it...It is a teeny little town, no sophistication whatsoever. When John Stewart had his guys go there to interview the current mayor. She was asked what were her duties? She replied, " what duties? She says she comes into the office twice a week to write checks. On Tuesdays she writes checks and on Thursdays she meets with the people who work in the office. When asked who takes care of all the municipal tasks related to running the town, she said other offices do those things. So much for Sarah Palinb's vast executive experience...it was a joke~

Just keep them safe.

Don't worry. There are snipers on the roof of the temple, which is directly across from his house. If anyone gets through the blockade, they are toast.

"They are toast"...That is a funny one. (LOL)

Too bad he hasn't been established long enough to get a summer place in Michigan, like most wealthy Chicagoans.

You only need one real "home" not half a dozen vacation houses. Wonder who W's friends are. Doubt he has any.
