NEW YORK — Nickelodeon TV, the children's' network, is getting ready to cover its first presidential inauguration.

Young reporters Lily Collins, rocker Phil Collins' daughter, and J.J. (Nick would not release his last name) will be in Washington on Jan. 20 to show Barack Obama's inauguration from a pint-sized perspective.

Throughout the presidential campaign, Nickelodeon found that interest among its young viewers matched that of the adults. Nick's own online "election" had 2.2 million children voting, with kids supporting Obama over John McCain (51 percent to 49 percent) in a closer margin than the real election.

"We decided to carry it through so that kids would have the full experience of the presidential election," said Marva Smalls, executive vice president of public affairs at Nickelodeon.

The coverage will show up during commercial breaks and, most prominently, during the periods between regular shows in prime-time. Nick will offer a retrospective of past presidents taking the oath of office and interviews with young people about Obama's election and his inaugural address.

Nick won't cover the speech live, but will take excerpts shortly after it is done from coverage on a news network and package it for its viewers.

"We can't go live in the same way the networks are going live but it will feel the same way to kids," Smalls said.

The station's young viewers are particularly interested in the process because Barack and Michelle Obama's daughters, Malia and Sasha, are squarely in Nick's demographic, she said.

Nick reporters covered the primary this year for the first time (another online poll found kids selecting Obama and McCain as the nominees before Super Tuesday) and went to the Democratic and Republican party conventions. Republicans didn't allow Nick TV reporters on their convention floor; the Democrats did.

This is great news! Nick Rocks!!

I got my 5 and 6 year old daughters involved in the election by making it kid friendly. There was the "blue team" and the "red team" and they learned who Obama, Clinton, McCain and Huckabee were and why I liked Obama so much. I was careful though not to be to harsh about the others and let them listen and make their own judgements. My 6 year old loved Obama and my 5 year old Clinton (she wanted a girl to be president). They went canvassing with me and loved meeting all the people in the neighborhood.

On Super Tuesday we got two big poster boards and wrote down all the states with boxes under Obama and Clinton's names and everytime someone won a state they would run to the poster and put a check. They watched every primary and election night. Now that the election is over they still ask me questions when I watch the news. "Who is that...What is this story about...etc...". They are still so interested. I am really proud of them.

Thank you Nick, for including and involving the kids. Our granddaughters - ages 10 and 7 - backed Kerry in 04, then Hillary and, ultimately, Obama. They even went to the Iowa caucuses with their parents. It's great that they're being exposed to the process and the responsibility.

Good, it would be a great idea also for a kid news show. These 24/7 news channels are lacking substances. Out of 24 hrs they have about one hour of news and that is on a good day.

This is too cool. Good thing Obama's daughters won't have to worry about him interrupting their shows. :)

Back in the Pleistocene when I was a kid, I liked Nickelodeon because I found its programming to be cutting-edge and non-condescending. While it has been many years since I've been a regular viewer, this news reaffirms my initial assessment.

My kids will love to hear this, my oldest got all worked up when McCain won in his school (we live in a very red state, and in a small red-neck city). We had to explain that just because mommy and daddy we smart voters did not mean everyone else was...

lol

I think this is a great idea.

During the election, my 9-year-old daughter used to get into little debates with her classmates about who was going to win the election.....I'm so proud! (and of course, "our side" ultimately won out!!)
