I Like ItI Don’t Like It

Caroline Kennedy just gave a bona fide press avail on the sidewalk outside the Harlem soul food mecca Sylvia's, avoiding questions on substance and at first delivering a rehearsed answer, but finding a fairly steady, if non-committal, voice in the face of the press scrum.

She was introduced and shepherded by Al Sharpton, who ate two kinds of chicken (grilled and baked) and collard greens with her.

Well I cannot say that I did not expect this kind of racism in the comment section. White liberals are really no different from white conservatives.

I think she's trying to get what the homeboys call "street-cred".

in other CK news:
Contrary to popular belief, CK does know at least few places in Upstate and Western NY. Not surprising really since her cousing Kerry used to be married to Andrew Cuomo in happier times. Apparently, there's a house in Syracuse where she is also welcome. Liz Moynihan's.

"No one in New York politics knows more about the state than Liz Moynihan. No New Yorker knows more about how to do the job of senator than Liz does, especially after living through the day-to-day duties of Pat Moynihan's years as chairman of two committees including Finance, the senate's most important committee. And no one else can tell us what Pat Moynihan would think about who should be the next person to take his old seat in the Senate. Liz Moynihan has just released this statement about Caroline Kennedy:

'Caroline is a very intelligent, serious person with a long interest in government and the Constitution. As a US Senator she could be a great help to New York. I'm sure Pat would be thrilled to see her in that seat.'"

Am I the only one who thinks Al would be the better choice for senator?

I have to admit, I'm with you there. I wouldn't vote for him. But at least he'd be there on his own merits. Still, there's Mayor Byron Brown, Congresswoman Kirsten Gillibrand, Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez, Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney, Tom Suozzi, Steve Israel and Adolfo Carrion. There are a lot of people to choose from. We don't have to go with the neophyte heiress.

Why did NY go for Hillary? Did you not have a lot to choose from then?

Actually, I would feel better about Al, though I'd never vote for him. I don't know why these Caroline fans won't consider people who've already been vetted by New York voters, like Mayor Byron Brown, Congresswoman Kirsten Gillibrand, Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez, Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney, Tom Suozzi, Steve Israel, or Adolfo Carrion.

Not rich enough? Wrong parents?

Only one of the people you site has been "vetted" by me. I voted twice for Gillibrand. Why the hell should I feel any better about any of the others being appointed to represent me in the US Senate? I actually know more about, and have a great respect for, Caroline Kennedy.

It's an interim appointment; there's a special election in less than two years. People need to chill.

Al Sharpton? Seriously? Doesn't he have BIGGER issues these days?

I don't Caroline needed him to get black voters if that was her concern.

If you tempt Al, he could run for & win a seat in the US House of Representatives. There is no way that Al could become a clone of Adam Clayton Powell, jr but covering the house could be fun again. Keep it in mind Rev Sharpton, please. This meltdown to recession with a depression coming up could get dull, till Obama starts a recovery. Rev Al has panache. You bet.

I don't have a problem with Caroline getting the seat. IMO, HIllary had no experience, was a carpetbagger, and I wonder if she would have been re-elected to the seat. Darn, give the woman a break. Someone has to be appointed, if she runs in 2010 and loses, then I guess she didn't deserve it. But, Patterson has to appoint someone and it may as well be her as anyone else. The problem is is that none of Hillary's people want her to have the seat! They don't own the seat!

this is akin to the sense of entitlement that HC displayed on the campaign trail.

I'm not a Hillary person. If she'd been appointed her senate seat because of her marriage to Bill Clinton, I'd howl just as loudly.

I'm not a fan of hereditary senate seats either.

There are hundreds of people who hold elected office in the state of New York. They haven't been senator, but they have put themselves before the voters. They participated in democracy. Let Caroline Kennedy do that just once before you make her an incumbent.

I've always liked the Kennedys. However, I have changed my perception of Caroline. She has been a recluse politically even though she's done a world of good in other sectors of the country. She appeared to be spooked by the media the other day. I believe she should put in much more serious political time in order to be sufficient for the Senate seat. She's definately not ready and her family ties does not make her qualified. I believe she has alot to do to be a formidable Senator and there's not enough time to prepare her. I believe she should begin campaigning right now for 2010 and get her game-face together.

Do you think being a Senator is just about giving good interviews to the press? Really? She's a thoughtful, intelligent, caring human being who knows more about how our government works than almost anyone else you can name. I'm not bothered by her sheepishness in front of large crowds of screaming reporters and camera people. She could learn to be comfortable in front of the camera, I don't particularly care if she ever does.

The Senate is the great deliberative body; I have little doubt of her abilities to think through complex issues with senses of history and ethics. I also believe that she can effectively persuade those with whom she disagrees to consider her opinions. She knows the law, is an effective communicator, is skilled in rhetoric, steeped in American political history. Oh, and she can raise campaign funds and win reelection and be a strong advocate for New York State for years to come.

I can't really think of anyone I'd prefer over Caroline Kennedy, right now. If the election were next week, I'd vote for her. I think her name recognition alone would make her a strong contender in a quick statewide election. Holding the special election in 2010 makes the election fairer to lesser known candidates. It gives them time to campaign. In the mean time, CK is a fine choice. People need to relax.

I think Sharpton should be the next senator. Ok, just joking... I think it will be Cuomo.

Time to stop this charade and appoint a real Western New Yorker to fill Hillary's seat.
(And that is a big seat to fill.)

My thought, exactly. Why does she seem to have such a dismissive attitude to WNY? Syracuse wasn't good enough for her?
