WASHINGTON — No strollers near the Capitol. No tents on the National Mall. None of that Silly String on the parade route.

That's just a sample of the items forbidden from President-elect Barack Obama's inauguration for security reasons. And while many people say the inconvenience is a small price to pay to witness the swearing-in of the nation's first black president, others are scratching their heads, trying to figure out how they will sit, snack, carry diapers or transport tired tots.

Some older people are backing out of their inaugural plans, partly because of a no-chair rule for the parade route. Parenting blogs are abuzz with complaints about the less-than-kid-friendly restrictions. Thermoses, coolers and backpacks are out at both the Capitol and the parade route.

"Of course, they're not going to say, 'no children,'" said Sunny Chanel, a San Francisco-based contributor to Babble.com, a parenting Web site. "But they're definitely not making it easy for parents with smaller children to go."

The tightest rules are reserved for the lucky 240,000 ticket-holders, who get to sit closest to the Jan. 20 swearing-in ceremony on the West Front of the Capitol. There are understandable prohibitions on weapons and pepper spray. But you also can't carry an umbrella. And don't think about holding up any "Yes We Did" signs _ posters also are not allowed.

It could get tricky as people congregate along the parade route, where many items allowed on the Mall will be off-limits. That list includes bicycles, backpacks, aerosols (which could include Silly String), coolers, thermal containers and chairs.

Signs or placards can be brought to the parade _ but only if they're made of cardboard, poster board or cloth and are not more than 3 feet by 20 feet.

Antron Johnson, who's organizing an inauguration trip with three busloads of Obama supporters from Atlanta and Savannah, Ga., said he's had about a dozen people, mostly elderly, who dropped out after learning about the parade's no-chair policy.

Additionally, Johnson said seven people, including families with young children, recently backed out _ losing their deposits _ because they're afraid they won't be able to maneuver in big crowds. Turnout estimates vary widely, with Mayor Adrian M. Fenty saying 2.5 million to 3 million people are a possibility and the National Park Service planning for at least 1 million.

Johnson said some people are worried about packed Metro trains now that officials are sounding warnings. Metro has said its bathrooms will be closed for security. The option left for parents wanting to change stinky diapers? Hundreds of portable toilets that the transit system and park officials are providing downtown.

"It's truly scaring people," Johnson said. "The news is becoming more and more bleak."

The rules aren't so strict on the National Mall, where most people will end up because tickets aren't required. Officials have said everyone will be checked, but they haven't said what that will entail.

People won't be able to see much, except what's on Jumbotrons, but they can bring all sorts of stuff. Besides the obvious no-nos _ firearms, explosives, fireworks _ the only bans are on alcohol, tents and glass bottles.

"The more you bring, the more difficult it's going to make your movement," said Sgt. Robert LaChance, a spokesman for the U.S. Park Police, which patrols the Mall.

Authorities say expect to go through some type of security screening. If you have an item prohibited for a certain area, they will confiscate it. When asked if specific items such as canes, walkers, lighters, matches and diaper bags would be prohibited from the parade route and the Capitol, authorities said they didn't know yet.

Just a thought. With all the security precautions in Washington DC having been publicized in excruciating detail, one would suppose the Radical Islamic Terrorists have probably paid a bit of attention. It also goes to say, that every eyeball in the US will be focused on the Inauguration. Most every TV set in homes, businesses and public gathering areas will also be zeroed in on DC as will most of the world. Couple this with the anticipated 'testing' of the new Administration, and you have a nasty potential for an end-run or sucker punch while we are all looking in one direction. Chicago? New York? Miami? Los Angeles? Just a thought.

Because of the expected crowd size, it is not safe to bring small children, plain and simple, especially in freezing temperatures. This is not an event for the faint of heart or for those who can't take care of themselves. It's no one's fault, just the nature of the beast.

All of the other James Bond stuff may make sense, as wily terrorists can probably construct a dirty bomb out of lawn chairs, or an RPG out of an umbrella and an auto oil filter, but ban Silly String? What kind of country is this?

I am staying home and watching the event on TV with family and friends. It is going to be a great day to celebrate. Goodbye bushies, hello OBAMANS. I hear a lot of talk about the possibilities of Obama being harmed and like others, having lived through Jack, Bobby and Martin, I hope the Security around Obama is tight, secure and safe for the new first family. That young man is carrying the hopes of the nation on his shoulders. He just has to succeed.

Let's not forget that Jan 20, 2009 will be an historic occasion with the election of the first black POTUS, along with the enthusiasm the recent election generated, and the burning desire to see George Bush go, millions of people will converge on Washington DC. It is left to us to use common sense in making our decision to attend or not to attend. With the millions of people who plan to attend, those persons must be prepared to deal with the crowd, the cold weather, security requirements, and a host of inconveniences. Security will be a virtual nightmare, with long lines for restrooms and other conveniences. Those of us who plan to take up ringside views of the proceedings in the comfort and warmth of our homes in front of our TV sets, will be guaranteed an unhibited view hassle free. Why would anyone choose to exchange comfort, calm, and warmth, for the cold and chaos beats me.

I just can't get over all the whiney people. Who in their right mind would take a child to ANY event , outdoors in January freezing weather with 3 million other people. As a parent, I can imagine I would have to give all my attention to watching my child, seeing to thier needs, worrying about them freezing, etc. ; and they won't be able to see over the crowd, and then BORING; waiting is boring , anywhere for a child. The fact of the matter is, to be part of this, you need to be nimble, travel light, be in perfect health, and have great endurance and presence of mind. If I was 30 and still run a 8 minute mile while talking I would be there. My view is that the complainers are putting themselves and their wants above those of the safety of the President. Those of us that endured losing Jack, Bobby, Martin would never complain about any security restriction. All of us should encourage strict measures while thinking: Never Again!

Amen. God keep that man safe. He may not be the messiah or the last son of krypton, but he's the best hope we've got.

Also, yay for watching on TV with a nice warm living room and a better view than the folks who have tickets.

He's the most heavily-threatened President-elect ever. So no, they're not.

No; in addition these precautions are for the safety of the crowd; The predators will out in force also. Pick pockets and other thieves; sex offenders and your garden variety stoned, drunk, or otherwise troublesome anti-social types. If I were there, I wouldn't want to have to stand next to some guy with a giant bag, which he never opens, but keeps that tight grip, and watch him watch the police. There are always people looking for their fifteen minutes of fame; they are trying to weed them out.

Seeing as how I haven't been able to get as much as a foldable umbrella into Giants Stadium since 9/11, not to mention a cooler or a backpack or even a bottle of water, these security measures don't seem unusual.

Its a great inconvenience for sure but people learn to adjust.

At least they're trying to publicize what's prohibited beforehand rather than having you bring it and have to toss it.

Years ago I visited the Capitol arriving late in the afternoon.

I was able to sit on the back steps, watch the guards change, the flag lowered while I ate a sandwich.

Those days are long gone.

I keep wondering what the Secret Service's attitude towards an Obama Presidency is.
I have no idea how these types of people think.

Are they pleased/enthusiastic, like, "Oh BOO ya! Ready to take a bullet, y'all! THIS is what I got into this line of work for!!" Or are they worried, like, "Oh p00p, bring on the antacids. I get the sinking feeling our job just got a LOT more dangerous"?

Is the POTUS detail something you jockey for, or...?
No offense to the Sec Svc. It's just, it must be hard, psychologically.

I'm going too. I know someone, who knows someone, who knows someone way up the chain who got me two fabulous tickets up real close. This is the first time I've really felt so inspired and glad to say my president. I happy and afraid at the same time. I just don't want anything to happen to the Obamas. The recent stir from these hysterical gays is unsettling. I will be relieved when this inauguration is over. Some of the hostile and fifthly comments posted on this site in the last few days need to be investigated. Some of the articles posted are adding to the hysteria. Huffpo writers need to post something to calm some of these people down.

I'm sure a lot of people wanted to bring chairs so they could get a place hours in advance, and then just sit there until it was time.
