I Like ItI Don’t Like It

Sharp elbows are already flying in the Obama camp. With Barack Obama the first avid basketball player to be elected president, political appointees, college coaches and NBA officials are all angling to get in on the game.

...

Not everyone is excited about basketball's arrival as the semiofficial sport of the White House. The bowling lobby is concerned that talk of removing the White House lane -- which was built under the north driveway -- will have a negative impact on their sport. In an effort to change the president's mind, top bowling associations have offered to refurbish the lane with a state-of-the-art scoring system, high-tech bowling balls designed to grip the lane and a digital surround-sound system.

It would be great for the girls when having sleepover friends to have a bowling game, popcorn and sodas! Perhaps an outdoor court for the basketball full sized court enclosed in a temporary greenhouse type structure for the winter and removable walls for the summer play! Best of all worlds! Gosh I wish them the very best of all worlds, they are giving up the simple life with it's simple privacy and pleasures. Their lives will never be the same, so as many adjustments as feasible should be accommodated.

Obama could always play at the "highest court in the land" the Supreme Court's basketball court. From what I read, Byron White used to play hard-nosed games with his staff.

I think they are mostly concerned with the collar size on those ugly bowling shirts....

The concept of a "bowling lobby"...why do I find this so utterly hilarious?

The last time I was in a bowling alley was at the Jillian's near Fenway, and that was just out of curiosity after a high school alumni event. I can't even remember the last time I actually bowled in real life and not in a computer game.

Bowling's its own negative impact. It's too kitschy and reminiscent of the MAD MEN era to be hip anymore.

Why did Huffpost have to use the word "PIMP" in the headline?? Hmmmm??? :)

Because the MTV show PIMP MY RIDE has put the term into the common vernacular for making something flashy to the point of tacky ostentation.

While he's at it Obama might as well re-paint the "White" House.

Why? What's wrong with the existing color?

Come on! He isn't about to rip out the bowling alley - he may never visit it, but he won't rip it out.

i think bowling is fun, but obama can do whatever he wants with the place when he moves in, just like other presidents before him.

and that headline is stupid, there's no need to refer to it as "pimping" out the place just because the man is black.

You're right, moda31. So now, redecorating the White House is pimping it out? As an African American, I didn't realize that I just finished 'pimping out" my family room, I thought I just redecorated.

Response to moda31 & jayjola: I agree with you about the use of the term. When I saw the byline I immediately checked the authorship and noted "WSJ" apparently pimped the article to Huffington Post.

It is an overused term, to be certain. And at this point, it has not lost all of the negative connotations. It may be moving that way, but I would hope there are better words to be used.

Is this for real? I have been in the White House bowling alley. It is in the basement near the service area. It is long and narrow with one lane and a low ceiling it could not possibly fit a basketball court. Not even a half court.

Paint it white and it would look just like the Milk Bar in "A Clockwork Orange."
