Lesbian's Gang Rape Shocks San Francisco Community

I Like ItI Don’t Like It

SAN FRANCISCO — A woman in the San Francisco Bay area was jumped by four men, taunted for being a lesbian, repeatedly raped and left naked outside an abandoned apartment building, authorities said Monday.

Detectives say the 28-year-old victim was attacked Dec. 13 after she got out of her car, which bore a rainbow gay pride sticker. The men, who ranged from their late teens to their 30s, made comments indicating they knew her sexual orientation, said Richmond police Lt. Mark Gagan.

"It just pushes it beyond fathomable," he said. "The level of trauma _ physical and emotional _ this victim has suffered is extreme."

Authorities are characterizing the attack as a hate crime but declined to reveal why they think the woman was singled out because of her sexual orientation. Gagan would say only that the victim lived openly with a female partner and had a rainbow flag sticker on her car.

The 45-minute attack began when one of the men approached the woman as she crossed the street, struck her with a blunt object, ordered her to disrobe and sexually assaulted her on the spot with the help of the other men.

When the group saw another person approaching, they forced the victim back into her car and took her to a burned-out apartment building, where she was raped again inside and outside the vehicle. The assailants took her wallet and drove off in her car. Officers found the car abandoned two days later.

The woman sought help from a nearby resident, and she was examined at a hospital. Although the victim said she did not know her attackers, detectives hope someone in the community knows them. One of the men went by the nickname "Blue" and another was called "Pato," according to authorities.

Richmond police are offering a $10,000 award for information leading to the arrest of the attackers.

Gay rights advocates note that hate crimes based on sexual orientation have increased nationwide as of late. There were 1,415 such crimes in 2006 and 1,460 in 2007, both times making up about 16 percent of the total, according to the FBI.

Avy Skolnik, a coordinator with the New York-based National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs, noted that gay, lesbian and transgender crime victims may be more reluctant than heterosexual victims to contact police.

"Assailants target LGBT people of all gender identities with sexual assault," he said. "Such targeting is one of the most cruel, dehumanizing and violent forms of hate violence that our communities experience."

Skolnik said the group plans to analyze hate crime data to see whether fluctuations may be related to the gay marriage bans that appeared on ballots this year in California, Arizona and Florida.

"Anytime there is an anti-LGBT initiative, we tend to see spikes both in the numbers and the severity of attacks," he said. "People feel this extra entitlement to act out their prejudice."

Today I pulled a book from my old dusty shelf...."Against Our Will" , Men Women and Rape by Susan Brownmiller, written in 1975 I must say, as a society we have come a long way. It is all inclusive with the exception of the subject of lesbian rape. It is never addressed in this book of 541 pages!

I'm a nurse and worked for many years at Sonoma County jail, starting in the mid 70's. I was "out" then and am still "out". I now live in Lake County, and trust me, this is a tad bit different from Guerneville!!...but I love it. I ride a Harley and am probably a token around this area. I also co-host a radio show, for our local radio KPFZ "Our Stories Our Lives", about gay and lesbian issues each week.

I did a special about the rise of hate crimes a couple of weeks ago prior to this incident. It is so very sad that it takes something like this to bring our struggle to the public eye. Still second class citizens without equal protection a rights....our day is coming.

To this brave woman that survived to tell her story....you are embraced by many on a spiritual level. I, as do millions of other, stand with you holding your hand, walking towards the light of equality and love.

Truely discusting and not only is it rape, but a hate crime and I hope these individuals receive life in prison!

I thought the rainbow flag was a symbol for diversity and not gay.

Treating people unequally under the law, allows others to rationaize that inequity of any sort, fairness, decency, respect, is not only condoned but encouraged. Just ask the Pope who has said this season, that it is more important to protect society from homosexuality than it is the environment.

Hate speech abounds and in the violent and mentally unstable it can manifest itself in horrific acts of violence. You cannot separate the rape from the lesbianism in a hate crime, which means you cannot separate them in the discussion.

State sanctioned discrimination sends a message.

Welcome to our lives. I've known women raped by cab drivers for hailing them as they left a gay bar. These kind of stories have been going on for a long time. Face the facts, nothing has changed.

Only the law can start the healing and accepting the rights of the LGBT community is an important step.

The constant message--from people like Rick Warren, Tony Perkins, Dobson, and their followers is that GLBT are "less-than" human and violence against them is somehow "more all right" to indulge in. Until minds--and laws--are changed, this violence and demonstration of power over "others" will continue. Even more reason for us to demand equal rights--not sometime, when people are more ready for it (they'll never be ready) but NOW.

It's too easy to lose sight of the victim in these discussions. I'm hoping some folks can donate & help her out. Her local Rape Crisis Center (aka local Community Violence Solutions) has set up a trust fund for her & 100% of the proceeds are to go to her. Here's a link:

There's a place that asks if it's "In honor of" and you fill in "Jane Doe Richmond". Or, if you'd prefer to send a check:
Community Violence Solutions
Attn: Joanne Douglas
2101 Van Ness Avenue
San Pablo, CA 94806
and be sure to put in the memo line "Jane Doe Richmond". Thanks.

Unequal laws serve to suggest that gay people are undeserving of respect. This leads to hatred and hatred inevitably leads to violence. Simple as that.

It doesn't matter where it happened or what this victim's sexual orientation is. What matters is this is a violent act and, unfortunately, not an uncommon one. I have known women who chose an alternative lifestyle because of such violent macho behavior. This not only speaks to mans ability to inflict violence on women, but also the reason why we need to stop the insurance funding of such things as Viagra (since men don't need that much motivation) and start doing more to protect a womans right to choose. Under the ignorant Bush doctrine shared by many GOP, this woman would neither have the right to the morning-after pill nor the right to terminate any pregnancy possibly resulting from such a heinous act.

If we are to change society, we must first change ourselves. We are supposed to be intelligent and compassionate. We once were, and we must be again.

Although I agree with much of what you wrote, I have to take issue with the line:

"I have known women who chose an alternative lifestyle because of such violent macho behavior."

I, too, have issues with this type of behavior, but I'm not gay and I won't "go gay". You are or you aren't.
07:41 PM on 12/24/2008
i agree. if a woman doesn't like macho behavior, she simply doesn't date a "macho" man.

Just to re-state this fact:

This did not happen in San Francisco.

This happened in Richmond, which is a different city across the Bay. Despite the fact that the headline says "San Francisco" and they show a photo of the Golden Gate Bridge, it didn't happen here and i don't even recall seeing it on local newscasts.

But it sure does make it sound much more timely and exciting if you emphasize the "lesbian" angle and then try to connect it with San Francisco.
12:19 PM on 12/24/2008
OK, but what are your thoughts about the rape itself?

It seems you are trying to divert attention away from the act.
05:44 PM on 12/28/2008
Why do i have to "give my thoughts on the rape"?

My thoughts had to do with the intentionally misleading headline of the story.
Are you expecting me to be "pro-rape" or something?
12:49 PM on 12/24/2008
Darn those pesky lesbian "angles" - they only mean to exploit r.ape to approximate attention to Prop 8.

As both a les.bo and former resident of Richmond - I can tell you that something had to give, so I moved.

I'm glad to hear Richmond elected a Green mayor - she has her hands full.

Yes this is true, a mariage is between a man and a women.

Do you also believe that whites and blacks should be able to marry as well? Get over yourself.

So does that "not helpful" comment insinuate that Obama was not helpful in stopping this horrendous attack?
If so you are delusional.

Mark Potok, of the Southern Poverty Law Center, has stated that anyi-gay language by religious institutions and ohters is not only hateful, but dangerous. “It is quite remarkable how they claim to hate the sin but love the sinner. That’s an absurd claim. We have reports that clearly show this kind of rhetoric paves the way to violence,” Potok said. “Without question, gay men and lesbians are the most attacked group — and the hate crimes toward them are more violent.” Offenders often say they are simply acting out the wishes of the larger community, Potok stated. So when Christian leaders spout anti-gay messages and preachers sermonize on the “moral intrinsic evil” of homosexuals, there is little doubt the language leads to violence, Potok added, “these leaders are acting in a sense as permission-givers for violence.”

Because some men can also be considered animals ...

Now what?

ALL people can be considered animals. It's only the human animal that acts like this. You do great insult to the other animals when you compare their behavior to humans.

Dear Woody,

I assume you are not a specialist in animal behavior, as you seem completely misinformed on the mating practices of some birds. Suffice it to say, animals do "rape" and they do physically abuse their mates. Just so you know...

Castration wouldn't work because rape seeks psychological gratification, not physical, sexual gratification.
08:06 PM on 12/24/2008
exactly. someone knows who these guys are. let's hope that the $10,000 reward helps in having someone come forward.
08:41 PM on 12/23/2008
A horror like this is beyond imagination. I truly hope that this woman can someday move past this experience, although I'm not sure i could. Castration and a life behind bars, where these sub-humans can be raped continuously, is the only acceptable punishment. It truly makes me sick to my stomach to know that rape happens everyday all over the world. Please everyone who reads this story send this woman vibes of strength and hope.
