Palin: McCain's Biggest Mistake Was Sheltering Me From Press

Sarah Palin frequently disparaged the political press when campaigning with John McCain. But she tells Human Events' John Gizzi in an interview that she wishes she had spent more time talking to the media:

GIZZI: What was the biggest mistake made in the '08 campaign?

PALIN: The biggest mistake made was that I could have called more shots on this: the opportunities that were not seized to speak to more Americans via media. I was not allowed to do very many interviews, and the interviews that I did were not necessarily those I would have chosen. But I was so thankful to have the opportunity to run with John McCain that I was not going to argue with the strategy decisions that some of his people were making regarding the media contacts?

But if I would have been in charge, I would have wanted to speak to more reporters because that's how you get your message out to the electorate.

In general, the Alaska Governor (named "Conservative of the Year" by the magazine) seems to think she was over-managed.

GIZZI: And what was the most important lesson you learned from the campaign?

PALIN: The campaign was 99.9% amazing and invigorating and inspiring. But looking back, there were so many things that were outside of my control. I was in a campaign in which I did not know the people individually running the campaign. So I had to put my life, my career, my family, and my reputation in their hands. That's kind of a scary thing to do when you don't know the people you are working with.

...

As an administrator, as a chief executive of a state, I am not used to that. I am used to proving my abilities by calling the shots. Then I know the buck stops with me. I made the decisions, and I'm responsible. When others are making decisions for me, as they were in the campaign, and I am the one to live with the fallout from the decisions that were made on my behalf, that is something I am not very comfortable with.

...

[M]y reliance on seeking God's direction in all that I do -- that is good enough for me. And others who have a different worldview and different strategy on messaging and such, I would like to have the opportunity to prove to them that my gut instincts were going to be quite adequate.

Robert Stacy McCain, a blogger at the conservative American Spectator agrees. Read the whole interview, in which Palin discusses the auto bailout and former Sen. Ted Stevens.

Doesn't this whack-job realize every time she spoke to the press, the late night talk shows had another 10 minutes of unscripted jokes.

God I can't wait for her to run in 2012, The Daily Show will finally have some funny material, I have no idea what they will do with Bush gone.

Sarah, are you dyslexic? It was your exposure to the press that sunk you - it didn't matter who was asking the questions, if you hadn't been dumb as two rocks, you could have answered them. It wasn't like the press wasn't bending over to help you.

I think Palin is missing the point as to why she was selected to be McCain's VP candidate. McCain's handlers simply wanted a female on the ticket to entice the millions of disenfranchised women who had now lost the opportunity to vote for Hillary. It is highly doubtful the McCain camp ever looked at Palin to contribute in any other fashion.

I meant to say that they do not know the location of their nearest public library. :-)

Every time she spoke to the press she showed how ignorant and empty headed she is. The McCain operatives were smart to show her as the empty headed babe who pleased those who found her to be a "breath of fresh air": the folks who never read the newspaper and do not know where their nearest public is located.

i think she does have a point. She should have researched the party a little better before she jumped into a 1978 republican run campaign. In the same breath she was looking out for her ( fame).
so she jumped in with both feet.
I think sarah Palin is a morale person. I don't think she has the intellagence to be a president. I personally believe the person running our country, should be way smarter than i am and a think out of the box type of person.
Their is know where in the constitution that states that you have to be a Christian to be an american.

I could not disagree with Palin more. The biggest mistake (that was made in the McCain campaign) was McCain picking this unqualified person in the first place.

Agreed.

Let me add, she sent Republican moderates over to the Democrats. The suburbs, baby, the suburbs.

There was a time in American politics when candidates were qualified for the offices they were running for. We may not have voted for the winner, but we knew the official qualified for the position. Liberal and conservative voices came together as one moving us in a direction that had meaning and purpose. Whatever differences we had as Americans were dissolved in our common respect for our Constitution.

Sadly, with Sarah Palin, we see the championing of the unqualified. If she couldn’t handle the Couric interview, can you imagine what a field day world leaders would have with her? Surely there is a more articulate, intelligent, educated conservative voice that would add meaningful discourse to our political landscape than Palin?
