Retailers Hoping For A Merely "Bad" Holiday Sales Season

For years, one of the more common descriptions of the holiday sales season was "good, not great." This year, the mantra may be "bad, but not doomsday."

"It's going to be pretty bad. I don't know if it's going to be a disaster," says Scott Hoyt, director of consumer economics at Moody's Economy.com. The economic forecaster expects Wednesday's Commerce Department report on personal spending for November to show a drop of 0.5% from the previous month. In October, spending slumped 1%, the largest decline since September 2001.
