I Like ItI Don’t Like It

It seems like cheating, or bad karma, but it's possible to have a yule log crackling on the television screen anytime, even several days before Christmas -- or on Halloween or Presidents' Day, for that matter.

With titles like "Ambient Fire" and "The Happy Holiday Hearth," yule log DVDs offer a dizzying array of flaming options, from stately baroque plumes to crispy, woodsy campfires. There is even a soft-core porn Christmas log: on "Yule a Go-Go," dancers like Ms. Tickle and Bunny Love perform tassled, spangled burlesque-style stripteases to Christmas carols in front of a roaring fire. (Actually, those flames are quite subdued, for perhaps obvious reasons.)

I am blessed with satellite TV. I flipped in each showing of the Yule Log on WGN, KWGN, WPIX, KTLA, and our local WXMI (all Tribune stations). Observations:

*WGN - best color (on my TV, anyway - a CRT set)

*KTLA - has this modern looking fireplace and is playing a simulcast of a local radio station. Looks REALLY bad. Looks like the are sho.oting in someone's house.

*WXMI - has this floating golden ornament in the corner with sponsors. It looked completely ridiculous. The whole object of the Yule Log is to pretend your TV is a fireplace. If you put an animated ornament in the corner, it takes away the effect.

*WPIX - playing it from 9 -1 !!!!!!! Wow.

I know -- I put too much thought into this. There's nothing else on. :-)

I actually like the one that comes with A Colbert Christmas - a Book Burning Yule Log. Yeah, it's tasteless, and offends my sensibilities, but it's still funny.

It's my favorite, too. I truly hope that a Colbert Christmas: The Greatest Gift of All becomes a holiday tradition

madmoll: Do you, like me, feel a little queasy laughing at it? I mean, I really do find book burning offensive, but I still think it's funny. Part of the reason I prefer it to my old yule log DVD is that the old one was fairly static.

We honor that unsung pioneer of television, Fred Thrower, father of the Yule Log. http://www.theyulelog.com/htmls/father.html
