NEW YORK — The author and publisher of a disputed Holocaust memoir defended the book's story of love between two survivors, but also called it a work of memory and not of scholarship.

"This is my personal story as I remember it," Herman Rosenblat, 79, said in a statement issued Thursday through Berkley Books, which will release his "Angel at the Fence" in February.

Berkley added its own comments, noting that a leading Holocaust expert, Michael Berenbaum, had found the story's "general outline" credible, but also saying that "any memoir based on the memories of a survivor is verifiable only by him or her alone."

Rosenblat's book is based on his well-publicized story _ embraced by Oprah Winfrey among others _ of how he met his future wife, Roma Radzicki, on opposite sides of a barbed-wire fence at a Nazi concentration camp. Scholars have questioned whether such an encounter could have happened.

"The events that are its background are part of history; the book, however, reflects my memories of how the events affected my life. I was a young child at the time my family was caught up in the Holocaust, and I saw things through a young child's eyes. But I know and remember what I saw," Rosenblat said in his statement.

"What I offer in this memoir are the images, sounds, smells and feelings that have stayed in my mind for some seven decades."

As the Rosenblats have recounted on numerous occasions over the past decade, he was a teenager in a concentration camp in Nazi-controlled Germany and she was slightly younger, her family pretending to be Christian and living nearby.

They met at the camp's fence, where for months she would sneak him apples and bread. Rosenblat was eventually transferred to another camp and lost track of his friend until years after the war, when both were living in New York and met on a blind date. Upon talking about their lives, they recognized each other and were soon married, in 1958.

The couple live in the Miami area in Florida.

Since going public with their story in the 1990s, the Rosenblats have been celebrated by Winfrey, among others, and have been the subject of a children's book, Laurie Friedman's "Angel Girl." A feature film is scheduled to begin production next year.

But scholars, some of whom were quoted in a recent story by The New Republic, have been highly skeptical, saying the layout of the camp _ Schlieben, a sub-camp of Buchenwald _ made it virtually impossible that Rosenblat could have approached the fence without being spotted. According to maps of Schlieben, the area where he and Roma might have met was located next to SS barracks.

"Some serious historians as well as other historical sleuths have done some pretty serious research on this story," Deborah Lipstadt, a professor of Modern Jewish and Holocaust Studies at Emory University, wrote on her blog on Dec. 15.

No one questions that Rosenblat was a prisoner, but Lipstadt worries that Holocaust deniers would be encouraged should his meetings with Rosa be disproved.

"There are also survivors who are very upset about this story," she wrote. "They just don't believe it."

Reason why people have come to exaggerate personal stories
- Celebrity Culture. It doesn't matter whether you are good or bad, truthful or not, you are somebody if you are famous
- Very difficult to get fiction published. Too many authors, too many books, established writers like Dean Koontz flood the shelves. But if you claim the story is "TRUE!" and it's "YOU!" - now you have a chance. A NY Times Top 10 book is very, very lucrative and the film rights are worth a lot. They tell fiction writers to write about what you know. What do you know better than your fantasized version of your own story!

I have read down through the comments and can not believe what I have read. People can't believe real life experiences but we have books and movies based on fantasy like Lord of the Rings and such that are so far fetched yet people get sucked in. What is wrong with having something real and dreaming of something good with it. So it was something he might have dreamed of and decided to write it as fact. Just change the category, print it, and buy it if you like or if not GO GET IT FREE FROM THE LIBRARY!!!!!! There are many more books that are much worse that should never have been printed but this is America and they were printed! Let this one be printed!

What has america come to that Oprah can decide or influence what someone can write or publish. Regarding "Angels on the fence", If this guy went through any experience and wants to write about it then it should be fine. If someone doesn't like what it is about then don't buy it and don't read it! It sounds like a good "story". I agree that it needs to be labeled as such. Remember he is a holocaust survivor. He survived unspeakable experiences. Let him tell what ever he wants......he earned it!

It's not like the central theme of the book is a lie. What's the title of the book again? Oops - never mind.

the film's producer, Harris Salomon of Atlantic Overseas Pictures, has vehemently defended Rosenblat and said in a statement Saturday ... "the integrity and the beauty of the story remains as a work of fiction."

rosenblat, like james frey, is obviously a talented writer capable of telling a moving and inspirational story - i cannot understand why they feel compelled to misrepresent their work as non-fiction when an accurate representation ( "a fictionalized account " ) would have absolutely no bearing on the quality or the success of the work

It is obvious that the Jewish people were targeted and persecuted in Germany in the '30's & '40's, and were made to suffer horrifically. Your point would be better made if you conceded this.

The book has been withdrawn from publication because it's a fraud.

Oprah does it again.

Do you realize how many Holocaust authors and witnesses have been proven to be frauds? Over 1400. But you'll never read about that in the US. Soon it will be a hate crime to even say this.

It's true. There will always be people who try and exploit a tragedy.

We are very lucky that Jewish and Holocaust scholars themselves police themselves in regards to this. Usually when fraud is found, it was by a Jewish or Holocaust organization. They really try and validate any published story they can, because they want only accurate and true memories to survive historically.

In Europe, most nations have a Holocaust Studies Institute which monitors claims and publications by survivors in their own nations.

This tempest in a teapot reminds me of the controversy of some of the military survivors of POW camps
Many many former POWs claim there was no way ever to escape; yet some did. To be able to totally refudiate an experienec , one must be there at the exact same pint in time. Otherwise, maps or no, you are just guessing.

There will always be a market for people who can share firsthand experiences of love and courage breaking forth at times of great emotional/physical deprivation and horror. Whether it's love stories like this that began in concentration camps or books like The Heart Has Reasons about rescuers who risked everything to help strangers during the Holocaust, people are hungry to read about the possibility of something positive happening in the midst of horror and destruction.

No we don't realize it's a lie. We weren't there & niether were you. There's a lot about that period that is not known or well understood so it's foolish to be dogmatic about it.

Holocaust survivors don't have the RIGHT to tell their stories....they have the OBLIGATION to do so. We are quickly coming upon a time when those who bared witness will all be gone. If they don't tell their stories now their stories will die with them and never be known. As the saying goes, those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it.

As for the none Jews, if their stories are not being told then they have only themselves to blame. Jews tell their stories because it is about THEM. I am tired of people having an issue with that. Do you walk around telling stories about other people's experiences? Only they can truly tell their own stories.
