Why Did Israel Attack Gaza?

The Independent   |  Katherine Butler   |   December 29, 2008 01:26 PM

I Like ItI Don’t Like It

Why has Israel launched the deadliest attacks on Palestinian territory since the 1967 Six Day War?

Israel's onslaught is a reprisal for a week-long barrage of rocket and mortar attacks from Gaza. Israel says it had to safeguard the lives in towns bordering the strip. Palestinians, and many others, believe the Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert also ordered the raids to achieve what his government had failed to achieve through other means: the removal from power of Hamas, the Islamist political movement elected to run Gaza in 2006, which it accuses of being controlled by Iran and Syria.

Was the timing a surprise?

The scale and ferocity of the attacks came as a shock to many but tensions had been building after the expiry on 18 December of a ceasefire.

Why did the ceasefire collapse?

Hamas had offered to renew the ceasefire if Israel reopened Gaza's border crossings. The strip had been sealed by Israel in an economic siege aimed at toppling Hamas. The blockade has brought the territory near economic collapse.

Are Israeli domestic politics a factor?

Very much so. Israel is preparing for general elections on 10 February. The prospect of a return to power by the hawk Benjamin Netanyahu, leader of the right-wing Likud party, promising tough action against Hamas, has hardened the positions of Israel's more moderate political leaders.

Can Israel achieve its security aims by attacking Hamas so forcefully?

It is difficult to see Israel's action as being anything other than counterproductive, particularly if it escalates and widens the assault. Unless a fresh truce can be negotiated quickly, the hopes raised by the election of Barack Obama to the US Presidency and the possibility of a more engaged US policy seem to have dimmed again.

Why? Because they can, they are so caught in a mental cycle of fear they will lash out at anything they think remotly threatens them and with our US tax dollars.
They also wanted the offshore natural gas reserves that belong to the Gazans, they are worth billions. Negotians for this started between ICE Israel Eletric Company and BP in June. It's resources...and genocide.
Our US tax dollars at work.

By invading Iraq on what was essentially a whim, america sent a message to other governments worldwide. Its ok to invade your neighbours as long as you really, really want to.

Obama really needs to prosecute Bush to help send a healthier message to the rest of the world. It would also make a start on changing the image of america from that of mindless bully back to something a little more productive.

Israel violated the ceasefire first by attacking civilians. Arabs have the right of self-defence too.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009/jan/04/israel-gaza-hamas-hidden-agenda

"...the truce was thrown into jeopardy in November when the Israeli military killed six Hamas gunmen in a raid on Gaza... Between June 2007 and June 2008, Israeli attacks killed 68 Palestinian children and young people in Gaza... In February, an Israeli missile killed four boys, aged eight to 14, playing football in the street in Jabalia.

In April, Meyasar Abu-Me'tiq and her four children, aged one to five years old, were killed when an Israeli missile hit their house as they were having breakfast. Even during the ceasefire, Israel killed 22 people in Gaza, including two children and a woman...

But Israel did not end the siege that was wrecking the economy and causing desperate shortages of food, fuel and medicine... "When the Israelis pulled out... We didn't expect that we would have to beg to allow food in," she said. Yossi Alpher, a former Israeli Mossad official and an ex-adviser on peace negotiations said the blockade of Gaza is a failed strategy that might have strengthened Hamas. "... It's collective punishment, humanitarian suffering... "I think people really believed that, if you starved Gazans, they will get Hamas to stop the attacks. It's repeating a failed policy, mindlessly."

So the thousands of rockets that Hamas has fired into Israel over the last few years was the Palestinians way of making nice? Hamas and the Palestinians do not want to negotiate or have a truce, they want only to kill all of the Israelis. If they did not want to be attacked, they should not have been continually launching rockets during the cease fire. They reap what they sow.

similar article titles with the articles revealing very different information and contrasting conclusions -- coincidence?
01:22 AM on 01/05/2009
The articles says that "The strip had been sealed by Israel in an economic siege aimed at toppling Hamas. The blockade has brought the territory near economic collapse."

Gaza has a border with Egypt. Israel alone cannot seal Gaza. Egypt has been keeping the Rafah border closed as well. Yet, Hamas did not fire rockets into Egypt. The blockade is only a pretext, the real reason that Hamas fired rockets into Israel is because the Hamas charter still pledges to destroy Israel.

Hamas managed to smuggle weapons past the sealed Rafah border -- they did not apply such skills to bring in food and other supplies. This is because Hamas itself is more concerned with armed struggle against Israel that with the people who live in Gaza.

You must not allow facts to get in the way of the anti-Israeli bloggers here. They enjoy getting half of the story and trying to shut down anyone with an opinion different from thiers.

Hi look, i live in israel and i am realy know what i am talking about...
The Hamas is attacking as for 8 years!!
Israel did everything to stop them (by peace) but they keeping attacking as..
The city Sederot can't live without being fear every day!!
I think that this is the smartest thig that Israel should do...

For Gaza is only few days, for Israel is 8 years!!!!!
07:25 AM on 01/06/2009
And for Palestinians 60 years!

Israel gives back the territory seized as per the UN resolution, makes reparations for those displaced in 1948, dissolves the illegal settlements; and the vast majority of Palestinians will live and let live. But just signing the agreements isn't enough - Israel has to learn to keep them.
11:15 PM on 01/07/2009
And for jews 2,000 years...!!!

Which timeline to choose?

Why? Could it be they truly think -

Hamas is also not going to fall for any call of ceasefire from Israel, which has imposed an economic blockade on Gaza Strip since 2006, makign Arabs live like animals in a prison-like environment with inusuufficient food and water.
03:33 PM on 01/04/2009
I live in Israel, and i want to see you live here and say things like that !!!
Every day Qassams fall in israel before israel's attack and after it !
07:25 AM on 01/06/2009
Yes and there were lots of loyal Germans who said their nation was just after security too, look where that led.
08:34 AM on 01/01/2009
The WHY'S? Who cares about the why's? They sail rockets over the border. We bomb the crap out of THEM. The destruction of INNOCENT HUMAN LIFE, and their way of life, and their right to live in peace is the crime BOTH sides are guilty of. It might be better to ask, WHY IS THERE SUCH A LACK OF VALUE FOR HUMAN LIFE IN THIS REGION OF THE WORLD?

hamas always calls for a truce once israel retaliates for repeated attacks during hamas last truces.
how many times does hamas expect israel to fall for that line.

Israel tries to starve Gaza and deny them medicine.
Gaza responds with bottle rockets.
Israel responds with 300,000 pounds of bombs and hundreds killed.

An eye for an eye leaves both blind.

Bottlerockets my rear! Lets shoot one of those "bottlerockets" into your house with your family in it and see who walks out. Israel is surrounded on 3 sides by enemies sworn to destroy them not to mention Iran. Israel makes up 2% of the middle east. Look at a map. Israel's exsistence is a stake and they'd be stupid and dead to let any of their enemies get a foothold on them.

We're taking about Hamas, in Gaza. Take a look at a map yourself. Gaza is the size of a gnat compared to Israel.

They may look larger, but their effect is basically the same as a bottle rocket

Make no mistake:

"W" WANTS "I" to succeed in G.a.z.a as well as in the W.e.s.t.b.a.n.k in the long run.

I have noticed, that "I"'s "Clean Break" and "W"'s "B.u.s.h-Doctrine" are virtually identical in goals and meanings - while different only in he scale of their reach - but not much.

"Clean Break" - http://www.iasps.org/strat1.htm

"B.u.s.h-Doctrine" - http://www.newamericancentury.org/statementofprinciples.htm

"Walk separately - s.t.r.i.k.e. united!" - anyone?

The attack may be intentional in order to force Obama to state conclusively that he supports Israel's action. They are challenging Obama. "What are you going to do about that buddy?" My hope is that others are able to see this for what it is. This is simply Israel making a bold statement just before the transition. Palestine was not wrong for wanting to use the Gaza without Israel's constant control. I don't like that Hamas is in charge, but it is who the Palestinians chose. Israel could have done something different. Instead of trying to destroy the mouse in the house by destroying the whole neighborhood, they could have used talks.

Talks work just great, don't they. I especially love all of those times that bus drivers were able to talk Arab suicide bombers out of killing a bunch of kids on their way to school. Wait, that never happened. Talks are delaying tactics to Arabs, time to rearm or turn public sentiment against the Israelis. The Israelis have shown remarkable restraint-if Cuba was bombing Miami, we would have flattened Havana by now. If someone broke into your house with a baseball bat, would you throw down a shotgun in favor of a bat in order to have a fair fight? (of course this is hypothetical because libs don't have guns in their houses much less have any idea how to use them safely).

Unconscious self destructive tendencies? This is not smart for the long term. Haaretz had an editorial describing them as the neighborhood bully.

The U.S. government, through the U.N., has vetoed dozens of U.N. resolutions condemning the actions of Israel, for decades. The atrocities being committed on both sides have been nurtured by the U.S. efforts to keep Israel free and independent through its' actions in the U.N. and it's economic (military) support of Israel.
In fact, we went to war in Iraq citing Iraq's refusal to comply with a U.N resolution to dis-arm and destroy it's 'weapons of mass destruction',(which were non-existent) yet we veto, in the U.N., any attempts to hold Israel accountable for it's own unlawful actions.
Although I have no moral certitude that one side or the other is "right' in this conflict (nobody does), it is wrong for the U.S. to continue to shield Israel from the consequences of it's actions by the world community. U.S. taxpayers are supplying the arms that are being used to slaughter the 'guilty' and innocent alike.
