KAILUA, Hawaii — A handful of pro-Palestinian activists protested outside President-elect Barack Obama's vacation home on Tuesday and urged a new approach to the Middle East. Obama did not acknowledge them.

Eight activists marched with signs to the edge of the property's security perimeter, telling reporters that they want the incoming administration to take a fresh look at the conflict between Israel and the Palestinian territories, especially given the current fighting in the Gaza Strip. They also said Obama needs to take a more active role in the conflict, even though he doesn't take office until Jan. 20.

"We feel there's a great need for change. We need to stop giving Israel a blank check to do what it's doing," said Margaret Brown, a 66-year-old Honolulu resident who held a handmade sign that read "Yes we can change U.S. policy toward Israel and Palestine."

"We just gave them a blank check to oppress the Palestinians, and this is the result," she said.

Obama's motorcade rolled past the protesters as it headed on a morning trip to Punahou School, his former high school where the president-elect was playing basketball. Aides said he was playing basketball with friends.

Israel continued its air attacks on Gaza on Tuesday and warned that a ground invasion could follow if rocket launches didn't stop. The United States has called for the militant group Hamas to stop launching rockets into Israel.

"Gazans need food, medicine, not war," read one sign carried by an activist to the Obama vacation retreat. "Free Palestine," read another. A third: "No U.S. support for Israel."

Brown said politicians need to speak what they believe, not what is expedient.

"It's political suicide to challenge Israel in this country," she said.

Obama has declined to inject himself publicly into the situation, although during the campaign he spoke in strong support of Israel's right to defend itself from Palestinian attacks. His aides say he has been in touch with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and has received regular national security briefings.

"What you don't say says a lot about your priorities," said Pete Shimazaki Doktor, a Honolulu resident who served as a medic during the first Gulf War and now teaches at a public school.

Doktor said he studied history after leaving the Army and came to believe the U.S. policy was misguided. He said Obama's top advisers give him pause.

"His Cabinet has been a message of continuity. There's no change there," said 40-year-old Doktor, who didn't support Obama but liked candidates Reps. Dennis Kucinich, D-Ohio, and Ron Paul, R-Texas.

He said he had concerns about future U.S. military engagement in that region.

"I realized that as a soldier," said Doktor, wearing a Vets for Peace T-shirt, "I had been used."

Obama and his family are near the end of a 12-day vacation in his native Hawaii. He has maintained no public schedule, has sought to keep low-key and had his aides guard his privacy. Since arriving on the island of Oahu on Dec. 20, Obama has limited his travel mostly to trips to the gym, golf course and dinner with friends.

Obama, wife Michelle and their two young daughters are scheduled to return to Chicago on Thursday.

I predict that Obama is going to say ENOUGH with the damn press.
He's going to say get off my freaking back already. You aren't doing
anything except act as stenographers anyway. Enough with the
paparazzi nonsense and give me a chance to breathe. As you
commander-in-chief I order you to GO HOME!!!

Do we really need a news article for every time Obama plays basketball? And for everytime he eats a tuna sandwich? Or goes to a store? Or a waterpark? Or... or...

Seriously, this paparazzi stuff has gotten way too far out of hand. There are so many things going on in the world, so many important issues. Instead of dedicating so much space to Obama's eating habits and basketball games, could we... I don't know, maybe have some articles focused on actual substantive matters? What about the Congo? Darfur? What's happening in Georgia right now? North Korea? Why don't we see articles about these things?

Give me a freaking break here-we live in a democracy and so there will always be protesters- end of story- thank heavens for that whether we agree or not OK? its our RIGHT remember?? YOU WANT this "right" and dont ever ever forget that!

Number 1 regardless of the state of Palestine at this point in time THEY CONTINUE TO FIRE UPON ISRAEL- AND CHILDREN AND OLD PEOPLE AND INNOCENTS ARE ALSO DYING IN ISREAL TOO!!!
Why is this so hard for your guys to understand?!
it is not such a shock to GET why Isreal fires back IS IT??? There is alot of combined responsibility here on both sides- and IF you recall ARAFAT screwed up talks and peace when he was still alive.
It is a big twisted mess but to always treat the Israelis like they are ALWAYS the bad guys then you guys need your heads examined honest to god- Palistinians are not devoid of fault here- and it is my beleif that Clinton and Obama could win a PulitserPeace prize if they put their heads together and THAT is MY focus and THATS what YOUR focus MUST be on and not all this baby whining.

I dont think people are bothered by them protesting they are bothered by them protesting him when he is NOT President. They should be protesting the white house or where ever Bush is. Then on the 20th they picket Obama. Obama was WISE to not acknowleged them.

Folks need to realize we HAVE a President and he is slithering out of office and getting away while Obama is being harrassed BEFORE he gets into office.

Interesting. Four "protesters" holding hand made signs outside PE vacation home get their pictures online and probably on the news. Almost a 1/2 million protest the war near the WH and there's barely any coverage.

I am a progressive and I voted for Obama thinking that he was the lesser of two evils that he had integrity. Well I am sadly disappointed that he is like any other politician that only speaks out when it is politically safe to do so. He spoke out forcefully against Russia when it responded to Georgia's attack, he spoke out against the terrorist attack on Mumbai all politically safe subjects. He spoke about and explained what he was going to do to resurrect the economy. I am not interested in material platitudes. I want you to transcend, to become someone empathetic, not to take sides. Your shameless political grandstanding when you visited the middle east to secure votes should have been a warning sign to me of what kind of president we were going to have, but I put aside my reservations and voted for you anyway HOPING you would rise above and be that who you promised to be. You do not speak out when it is safe to do so. You were right to speak out before and condemn Russia and terrorist attack on India, but you are wrong to keep silent on Gaza. I am truly sad.

Are you as equally saddened and disappointed that George Bush, who BTW is still the acting president) has done literally nothing and continues to act as though he has already left office while PE Obama has no authority to do anything until he is sworn in 20 days from now?

One thing has nothing to do w/ the other. Bush's shortcomings are not an excuse for Obama. Olmert was on TV quoting Obama's words as his reason for attacking Palestine. Some political courage would be lovely to see, but everyone's afraid to speak against Israel. We will never have the respect we need to broker peace as long as we're unbalanced towards Israel.

At a minimum BO could call for restraint and a response that is equal to the crime. Hell even one step above the offense is allowable in law enforcement, but this response by Israel is criminal.

How can you use Bush's inaction as cover for Obama's silence? Anyone who expects anything out of that Napoleonic lame duck is asking to be disappointed - in fact he's done enough damage and it's better off, at this point, if he does nothing.

For those of you asking themselves why the US sides with Israel, ask yourself the real question. Do you really think there would be an Israel left if the US would not have been by its side along the way. This country has been fighting for its survival since the first days of its creation when they got attacked right away and Palestine never accepted the parting of the territory, refusing to establish a country. Now, after all the years and wars, the territory left for Palestinians is nothing like they had at the beginning, thanks to their strategy. Even though we can voice our opinion about the intelligence of funding a country where people were already living (thanks to the Brits) the reality is a bit different than the Evil jews and the Good Palestinians. It makes me sick to know that in most arab countries around Isreal, the Palestinian refugees often don't even have the right to work. That's how they got treated by their own kind. So please, a bit of nuance in your commentary.

why is the US always on Isreals side anyway?! i'm confused about this but all I know is that when Obama does take office everything will be ok!! his team has been planning for this for the past two years and they know just how they will handle it so they're not saying one word unitl he is in office which is appropriate!! remember they're smart people and choose their words and battles wisely!! WHERE IS BUSH!! HE'S THE ONE THAT NEEDS TO COME OFF VACATION AND WHY IS HE ALWAYS VACATIONING ANYWAY!! LEAVE BARACK ALONE!!!!1

If that were true Olmert wouldn't have quoted Obama as his defense for overreacting and indiscriminate methods of attack.

There is a gorilla in the room and it is fairness (current conflict). Mr. Obama is about to step into the cauldron...may he be up to the task. Politics is all about favors, and back scratching, and coalitions...a beauty contest. Thus you get terms like perpetual campaign mode. I believe what Mr. Obama said during his march to leadership. The microscope is not focused on him yet. He is building his team, preparing for what will be an awe-inspiring spectacle (inauguration), and readying his game plan of leadership. Wait-and-see is the best approach. I do not think many people know how Mr. Obama is going to come out of the gate (his cabinet choices notwithstanding). Once he has the power then he will be under the microscope of deed to word. A cabinet choice does not betray an agenda because it is the power that sets the agenda...he does not have power yet.

Give me a break...politics in this country is what the citizens have allowed it to become. We vote the nemrods in and we can vote them out, but too often we are so political party line immunized that we let all sorts of creeps and crooks stay in office simply because of their party designation. They only get to do favors and back scratch because we sit on our butts and don't throw them out of office at the very next chance.

I get that the state of politics is representative. I was simply saying I am reserving my judgment on what aspect of the population Mr. Obama will represent until after he takes power. I am suggesting that even though I have differences with choices he has made, during the election, and since he has become president-elect, that it is prudent to wait to see how his vision plays out. Some think his appointments betray a hopeful vision. I think his appointments and their future success or failure under an Obama vision will be one metric by which to judge his effectiveness. I look for Mr. Obama to transform those around him, not the other way around.

A wise man told me he was going to teach me something I did not know. He did, but in the course of learning he always reminded me that what I already knew had value, it just required enhancement and conforming to a higher set of principles. So it is with Eric Holder, Hillary Clinton, and all the other cabinet choices. They are all skilled professionals. I look for Mr. Obama to make them better by helping them to identify weaknesses and strengths and to eliminate the former and increase the latter. I look for Mr. Obama to be transformed as well. His appeal for the job was his pliability if it was anything. That pliability suggests a broad spectrum of possibilities for outcome. I am hoping he morphs to greatness.

Good for these protestors.

I gotta say, I'm not sure what should happen in the middle east, or which side is to blame. I just hope the fighting there eventually stops for good. I'm really tired of this mess over there.

Yeah, and I'm sure they are all worried about how tired you are. But I guess this must be said, he's not the President why aren't they protesting Bush's at vacation? Bush may be a lame duck but the man is the President and should be acting like it until 20th.

Why are some of you saying that it's about time Obama ends his vacatio? Really? After two years of non-stop running for President and then becoming president-elect, and his grandmother died, plus most families are on vacation because of the holiday, and you have the nerve to say that he should end his vacation already?

Eff off!

What is the sitting president doing? It's his watch, his job today and until the 20th. Obama has no standing until he is sworn in, then he can start to clean up after the elephants.

Thank you for this comment! I thought the same thing and he's not in office until January 20th and can not do anything.

If the protestors were smart, they would protest the administration that is currently in office, not attempt to agitate Obama.

The man deserves to have some peace.

Obama deserves a vacation before he begins his term as President which will be very hectic and all-consuming. Meanwhile, Bush has been pretty much on vacation 365 days a year. Cheney and the rest of Bush's Republican mafia run the show and has run our country into the ground in the process.

I've really never heard of someone getting critized BEFORE they start a job. This is redicuious. Protesting someone who has NOT ON OUNCE of power is stupid. They just wasted their time.
