President-elect Barack Obama's choice of Rick Warren to deliver the inaugural invocation drew one kind of protest. Whether the evangelical pastor offers the prayer in the name of Jesus may draw another. At George W. Bush's 2001 swearing-in, the Revs. Franklin Graham and Kirbyjon Caldwell were criticized for invoking Christ. The distinctly Christian reference at a national civic event offended some, and even prompted a lawsuit.

Warren did not answer directly when asked whether he would dedicate his prayer to Jesus. In a statement Tuesday to The Associated Press, Warren would say only that, "I'm a Christian pastor so I will pray the only kind of prayer I know how to pray."

"Prayers are not to be sermons, speeches, position statements nor political posturing. They are humble, personal appeals to God," Warren wrote. His spokesman would not elaborate.

Evangelicals generally expect their clergymen to use Jesus' name whenever and wherever they lead prayer. Many conservative Christians say cultural sensitivity goes way too far if it requires religious leaders to hide their beliefs.

"If Rick Warren does not pray in Jesus' name, some folks are going to be very disappointed," Caldwell said in a recent phone interview. "Since he's evangelical, his own tribe, if you will, will have some angst if he does not do that."

Advocates for gay rights protested Obama's decision to give Warren a prominent role at the swearing-in. The California megachurch founder supported Proposition 8, which banned same-sex marriage in his home state. Obama defended his choice, saying he wanted the event to reflect diverse views and insisting he remains a "fierce advocate" of equal rights for gays.

The Rev. Joseph Lowery, a United Methodist who is considered the dean of the civil rights movement, said he hasn't yet written the benediction for the Jan. 20 ceremony. But he said "whatever religion the person represents, I think he has a right to be true to his religion."

Caldwell, also a Methodist, said no one from the Bush team told him what to say in his 2001 and 2005 benedictions.

The Houston pastor said he had "no intention whatsoever of offending" people when he quoted from Philippians and delivered the 2001 prayer "in the name that's above all other names, Jesus the Christ." In 2005, he still prayed in Jesus' name, but added the line, "respecting persons of all faiths." In the 2008 election, Caldwell supported Obama.

Franklin Graham, son of evangelist Billy Graham, who was a presence at presidential inaugurations for several decades, said it's wrong to expect members of any faith to change how they pray in public.

"For a Christian, especially for an evangelical pastor, the Bible teaches us that we are to pray in the name of Jesus Christ. How can a minister pray any other way?" Franklin Graham said. "If you don't want someone to pray in Jesus' name, don't invite an evangelical minister."

Graham, who in 2001 stepped in for his ailing father, ended the invocation with, "We pray this in the name of the Father, and of the Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, and of the Holy Spirit."

The lawsuit, which claimed that inaugural prayer was an unconstitutional endorsement of religion, failed in federal court. It had been filed by atheist Michael Newdow, who separately sued to remove the words "under God" from the Pledge of Allegiance.

Billy Graham, now 90, didn't say Jesus' name during presidential inaugurations, but made obvious references to Christ.

At Richard Nixon's 1969 swearing-in, Graham prayed "in the Name of the Prince of Peace who shed His blood on the Cross that men might have eternal life." In 1997, for Bill Clinton's inaugural, Graham prayed "in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit."

Leaders of other traditions with experience in interfaith work said they respected Christians who felt strongly that they should pray in Christ's name.

But they argued that a request for some modification is reasonable for a presidential inauguration, considering it's an event representing all Americans.

Imam Yahya Hendi, a Muslim chaplain at Georgetown University who travels to Muslim countries on behalf of the State Department, said that at interfaith events, he refers to Allah, or God, as "almighty creator of us all."

Rabbi Burt Visotzky, a professor at the Jewish Theological Seminary, the flagship institution of Conservative Judaism, said he invokes "God" for interfaith prayer.

"I know that for Christians, Jesus is part of their Trinity," said Visotzky, who has taught at Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome and at Protestant seminaries in the U.S. "For me as a Jew, hearing the name of a first-century rabbi isn't the worst thing in the world, but it's not my God."

While real problems threaten to shut down our democracy--the horrifying state of the economy, low-paying (or nonexistent) jobs, a disintegrating infrastructure, a public that refuses to pay taxes, and so on--the freethinkers are hammering away at the issues that really matter. Lucky us.

Cretins. Of course, a lot of this fuss and whining owes to the obvious fact that Obama is no "freethinker." He's too much like the real kind. Apparently, this fact is causing pain for many. Awwww. So they take things out on religion. Better than taking it out on their kids and spouses, I reckon.

You know, now the Jesus that is described in the anonymous gospels and in the Gospel of Thomas and some of the other Nag Hammadi books...I wouldn't follow him but I could actually imagine having a beer with him, shooting the breeze, and, yeah I could see being his buddy. And wishing him luck. I will confess that based on that reporting, I do admire Jesus Christ.

Paul, on the other hand, became a Pharisee for Jesus more or less. I would have nothing to say to him. Now I have actually read the Bible and studied it in a few classes as literature but I don't know where most "Christians" get their Christ from, 'cause I don't see it. Of course I am reading a 10th rate translation (filled with ideology) of the 20th edition or so of a few letters that may or may not have been written by their authors, and a serious of transcribed interviews, but so are they.

You know in our first paragraph you described exactly why people said they voted for GWB.

And look what we got.

of course jesus' legacy has been along the same lines.... wars , inquisitions, and division.

I am taking the day off on January 20th. And nothing will ruin my day or make me regret my vote for Obama.

But when the infamous Rick Warren starts the evocation I take a short walk and feed the birds in my backyard. Hopefully when I get back this man will be gone. We have to talk with everyone and so we will, but that does mean everybody we talk to should get an honored role at the inaugural.

a moment of silence YES YES YES ... the best idea !!!!
sincerely spoken by a person of international praise to speak these words:
"May we have a moment of silence for the dead, the dying, and all that suffered due to the insanity of one religion killing another because of erroneous differences, misunderstood events and out-right fictional accounts throughout the history of man ... may we be forgiven and never succumb to its depths again"

Yawn and Yawn some more.
He should be true to himself.
Likely he will be, and will do as he has always done.
That would not be and should not benews.

Neither is it news that you cannot be elected POTUS without being some sort of mainstream Christian.

No prayer is going to make even a majority happy.
No person giving the prayer is going to make even a majority happy.

I think it would be great to just keep all the prayer and bibles and invocations out of politics completely, but it will not happen.

Just like Gay marriage is no threat to my marriage, Rick Warren's beliefs and prayers are no threat to my beliefs--nor yours.

they are threats to impressionable children.
ex: kids bullied and beat up for not being christian (i encountered this throughout my life)
or child actiually so scared to think of a sin let alone commit one that they are not able to function ... they dont know if the g*d will send them to the lake of fire NOW or in 20seconds or next year or when they die ... that is terror

well, that helps explain why this thread is starting to look like your life's work. i'm sorry you got beat up as a kid.

i went to catholic school and no one i knew ever fought anyone because they weren't christian or catholic.

lumping everyone that believes in a god with the worst examples of those that claim to believe is intellectually lazy.

it might open your eyes to realize that some people of faith realize they can't prove there is a god, that we have souls or that there is an afterlife.

it might also prove eye opening to realize you can't prove there is no god, that there is no soul, that there is no afterlife.

humility all around is a good idea.

of course that is why warren chafes, with no humility he claims to know what jesus would say.

What the hell is this religious crap doing in a civic ceremony in the FIRST place.....

Look what happened up there in that "City on the Hill" when that solid wall between CHURCH and STATE was defiled:

Because religion IS allowed in public, contrary to the insistence of neo-progressives. Next question?

Is it any wonder that "believers" often do not get the respect they feel they deserve from non-believers? We're tired of being despised/pitied/blamed by those whose behaviors and lifestyles are often indistinquishable from our own...

Actually I sent a letter to Obama telling HIM what I thought. It won't matter since neither will get the message, but Obama is the one I sent my $ to and I at least found it cathartic. I prefer to be a constructively critical supporter than a blind follower which both men appear to have plenty of.

I did! Believe it or not. No reply. NOTHING! Go Figure! I told him I didn't appreciate his lying to his congregation regarding Prop 8 and then when he denied comparing same sex marriage to that of polygamy, pedophilia, and incest!
But, NO REPLY! Isn't that interesting?

I am an Obama fan, but this is the most populist and patronizing move he could've taken.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 04:10 PM on 01/01/2009

Populism is not necessarily a bad thing, it is more a kind of energy or public will that can be tapped for ill or for good. Whether it is patronizing is debatable. However, progressives need to take what opportunities we can to get people on the RR to listen to our positions and arguments without simply shouting "baby k i l l e r" or some other nonsense out of rote.

What about them? We're supposed to censor every idea and opinion they don't like?

At some point, the progressives who engage in your kind of thinking are going to have to 1) temper their intolerance a little bit or 2) admit they aren't progressives. Which will it be?

President Elect Obama knows that Reverend Warren is evangelical and that is how evangelicals pray. The New Testament Bible says to pray in the name of Jesus Christ. Obama is not going to fall off of his chair if he hears the name of Jesus pronounced. Our country was founded upon religious freedom and freedom of speech. If you tell a reverend, priest, rabbi or imam that they can't pray according to their beliefs, you are taking away not only their religious freedom but also their freedom of speech.
You will be setting a very dangerous precedent for a supposedly free country. Today it is christians that are being discriminated against; tomorrow it could be you. Wake up people, before big brother takes over completely.

Christians discriminated against! Are you effin kidding me??? Please tell me when you were last prohibited from practicing you religion in your home, on your property, in your business, your church, or any other non-governmental property. You're only "discriminated" against because a few of us try to keep state and church separate and that's the ONLY gripe you have.
The phony Christian persecution complex strikes again.
