Gardening

Treehugger.com:

It is a simple and optimistic idea. People register their interest as a grower, a spotter --someone who has seen land in their area that may be suitable for growing--or an owner. The register, once it is up and running, will put these people in touch with each other.

The facts are that 80% of Britain's population live in towns and cities, Britain's food travels 17 trillion miles every year to reach our plates and it costs four barrels of oil per person to feed us every year.

There's a site like this in the U.S. too! Check out http://sharingbackyards.com to find/volunteer land shares in your area.

I use my garden and it's great. Plus, my sick father keeps one going and in turn it keeps him going. City gardening been going on in my family for generations, and hopefully my daughter keeps the tradition going.

Does anyone know how to keep woodchucks and racoons away from veggie gardens???

Also wouldn't work here because we're so prone to litigation over trivial issues. You let somebody grow vegetables in your unused patch of ground then he wrenches his ankle in -- say -- an armadillo burrow (common sight in rural Florida) and he sues you....
You're better off buying your own piece of land. And then you get to pay taxes on it.

Add an indemnity clause to the contract.

wont work here. The way the land ownership laws are in many states basically state that if you let someone have access to your land for 5 years, they can keep on doing it forever. Thats just a really rough description, but my own family was caught in this in Iilinois. My Uncle never said anything to people cutting across one of his pastures to get to a river to fish, and when he tried to close it off later someone sued him, and won thanks to this law. So just imagine you let someone garden for years, and then decide to use that land yourself. Could you just tell them to leave if they dont want to give the garden up?

A brilliant idea. The benefits of community gardening are so numerous: bringing people together, saving environmental costs of massive monoculture farming and transportation of goods, providing excellent nutrition at low cost, and putting an end to hunger and poor nutrition in disadvantaged areas, to name but a few.

We need a lot more of that, and tools to help make that happen are beyond value.

Everything old is new again...... co-op gardening can now benefit from the technology available through the internet. Cool stuff.
