DENVER — Gov. Bill Ritter is expected to name Denver Public Schools Superintendent Michael Bennet to fill a Senate vacancy that will be created by the promotion of Sen. Ken Salazar to interior secretary in the Obama administration, sources told The Associated Press.

One source close to the governor who is in a position to know and another source in the Democratic Party said Bennet is Ritter's choice. Both spoke on condition of anonymity.

Ritter scheduled a press conference for 2 p.m. Saturday to introduce his pick.

Bennet had been mentioned as a possible choice for Obama's education secretary, but Obama chose 44-year-old Arne Duncan, chief executive officer of Chicago public schools for the Cabinet post.

Bennet was considered a dark horse candidate for the Senate spot because of his lack of legislative experience. A message left for Bennet at his DPS office, which was closed for winter break, was not immediately returned.

The Yale-educated lawyer in 2003 was tapped to be chief of staff for Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper, who then encouraged him to apply for the superintendent job for the 150-school city system two years later.

In June 2005, the Denver Board of Education unanimously appointed him superintendent of Denver Public Schools after he promised to provide each school with a highly skilled faculty and was able to get teachers to support merit pay. He also promised to track student progress and provide help.

The school board said Bennet delivered and students made strong improvements in reading, math, writing and science.

According to Denver Public Schools, the district posted a 6.2 percent increase in reading scores over the three years, more than four times the growth of the state. In math, there was a 6 percent gain, more than twice the growth of the state, and in the middle grades, Denver saw gains of 10 percent in reading and 9 percent in math.

Colorado Republican Party chairman Dick Wadhams said the seat was already being targeted in 2010 by both parties, but he said the choice of Bennet was "perplexing."

"There are some admirable things Bennet did with Denver Public Schools, but he'll be judged by what he does in the Senate. There are major issues coming up this year, and he'll have to vote on tax increases and bailouts. Those votes will define Michael Bennet," Wadhams said.

Political consultant Floyd Ciruli said Bennet is a risky choice for Democrats, who will have to spend millions of dollars defending that seat in two years.

"He's the one candidate on the list who has the least political experience. I don't think anyone knows his views on anything except education. This is surprising," Ciruli said.

Among the other Democrats who competed for the vacancy were term-limited state House Speaker Andrew Romanoff and Rep. Ed Perlmutter. Hickenlooper also asked to be considered. A message left for Romanoff was not immediately returned.

Former Denver Mayor Federico Pena and Rep. Diana DeGette told Ritter they weren't interested in the job.

Salazar will stay in his seat until he's confirmed as interior secretary following Obama's inauguration, which could take several weeks.

The quiet Colorado Senate search was a marked departure from Senate searches in the two other states with Senate vacancies.

In Illinois, Democratic Gov. Rod Blagojevich faces federal charges of seeking bribes in exchange for his appointment to Obama's Senate seat. Blagojevich has insisted he did nothing wrong and named an Obama replacement Tuesday, former state Attorney General Roland Burris.

In New York, where Sen. Hillary Clinton has been tapped as secretary of state, the high-profile search includes Caroline Kennedy.

Mr. Bennet is an interesting choice to fill a Senate seat.

He is a relative newcomer to politics, has not run for elective office, has minimal ties to Washington, has ties to his local community through his work in education, and has a background in law.

Sounds familiar, and this could be the change that was talked about. Political grinders take a back seat to possible inspirational leaders.

Maybe.

I am amazed that ANYONE gives a rat's ass what ANY member of the GOP whiners party has to say!
At this point in our history, the GOP is little more than a bad memory....and at the rate they keep whining and finding fault-----while NEVER offering solutions----they will be irrelevant for years to come! Many, many years, I hope!

Typical GOP blather. They are already trying to smear Bennet for voting on mythical "tax increases" that haven't even been proposed by anyone, while ignoring the fact that he got results. This is why the GOP keeps losing elections--the focus on blame and division rather than on getting things done in Congress.

Governor Ritter very disapointing!!!!!! Bennet will never be able to win in 2010. you had to know this. can't believe that you weren't smart enough to see that. you might just have been better off appointing someone right off the street or one of your children. Baca was the only choice. you know it, the Clintons know it, the Kennedys know it, along with every other major political powerhouse. You sure did blow this one!!!! Gauranteed this choice will come back to haunt you.
POLLY BACA 2010 Lets start the rally now - apparently it's back on the shoulders of the Colorado Peoples to build for our future.

I wonder how much he had to pay...

No one has mentioned that what Ritter was probably doing was appointing someone just to serve as a placeholder until the 2010 election, which Bennet obviously can't afford or win. That puts it back to the voters in the primary elections, where I expect at least some of the names on the likely appointment list will appear again. Plus Ritter avoids making enemies of the "real" contenders who he needs to support him in his own re-election bid.

I agree, except I believe Ritter is positioning himself for an easy run at the next primary for this seat. As a Coloradan, I can tell you Bennet is not known here and what is known of him isn't that great. It was really a surprise to me until I started pondering the effect of the appointment on Ritter himself.

Hmmmm, he has done nothing to improve DPS. NOTHING. He was a political choice for DPS and he's a political choice now.

True, I live in Denver and the schools here are appalling.

Well, they don't seem so good until you transfer to other places. Then you realize how good they are in comparison.

You can't have enough education guys in the senate. It's so critical considering the debacle that was "No Child Left Behind". I mean, do todays student s have to take The Constitution Test to get out of 8th grade?

I was a Perlmutter fan. I am worried Bennett's lack of 'name recognition' and ability to raise money will hurt when reelection comes around. The conservatives wanted Hickenlooper because in the reelection he would be 'beaten like a seal pup'. I am sure they are happy now.
And I was not surprised about Shanahan...poor coaching in the last 2 games and the last 2 years.

Agreed - I was pulling hard for Perlmutter, my CD Congressman, as well. Bennett, I think, was at the top of my "least likely" list. Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but based on all of the anecdotal evidence I hear about Bennett here in Denver, with the vast majority of my friends being in or of the teaching profession, I've never gotten the impression that Bennett was anything all that great for DPS, quite the opposite in fact. To be fair, DPS is a huge mess and always has been, but still.

There were a lot of great contenders, and many who I feel would fare much, much better in the next election than Bennett will.

If Ritter was going to pick an unlikely candidate, I would have much preferred Swanee Hunt. Very intelligent, years and years of political and non-profit experience, and has plenty of her own money to help out, if necessary, in any election bid.

Still, kind of glad to be rid of Salazar, frankly - not a big fan of the centrist, bordering on Republican, DLC brand of politics he so cleaves to. Also, he almost ran my car of the road on Speer while cutting across three lanes of traffic with nary a turn signal some number of weeks back. Apparently, he forgot where his turnoff what for his office on 15th.

Was he wearing his hat? Agreed re your comment..weak and will be 'beaten like a seal pup'. Ritter should have rubbed the gold dust from his eyes and been more realistic.

Agreed.

Additionally, I hope all the hot air about Bob Stoops is hot air. I'd really like to see Bowlen hire Steve Spagnuolo as HC and Elway somewhere in the front office (although maybe not as GM, yet). That way there will be no talk of Elway running for Senate in 2010.

It was a brilliant move getting Salazar out of the Senate and Bennet sounds much more progressive and tied into Obama's domestic agenda. Salazar who is one of the Dems mavericks in the Senate could have blocked health care and education reform in the Senate. Bennet will probably be much more of a dove than Salazar as well. The only positions Salizar is moderate on is environmental and conservation issues so we won't have to deal with Salizar's right leaning positions on domestic issues and foreign policy issues in the Senate anymore.
