CHICAGO — Just days before a high-stakes showdown in the nation's capital, the man selected to take President-elect Barack Obama's vacated U.S. Senate seat sought spiritual and political support on Sunday at a South Side Chicago church.

Warm words of support and prayers for Roland Burris contrasted with the frigid reactions from Senate leaders, many of whom say his appointment by embattled Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich is so badly stained that Burris shouldn't be seated when the new Congress convenes this week.

Burris took the stage at New Covenant Church on Sunday evening to a crescendo of drums, organ music and applause from hundreds of supporters, including black leaders and ministers.

"The appointment is legal," he said, thanking those gathered at the prayer service. "That is all there is. I don't know what all the confusion is about."

Before the service, Burris supporter U.S. Rep. Bobby Rush and about 60 ministers condemned Senate Democratic leaders for rejecting Burris.

Rush, a Chicago Democrat, called the Senate "the last bastion of plantation politics."

"We are just faced with a hard-headed room of people in the Senate who want to keep an African-American out of the Senate," Rush said.

The Senate's top two Democrats defended their right to deny the seat to Burris, while refusing to rule out a deal as Congress and its new members begin work this week.

Democrats say Burris' appointment is tainted because it was made by Blagojevich, who is accused by federal authorities of offering to sell the vacancy to the highest bidder. Burris, a former state attorney general, says the appointment is legal and the governor had the authority to do it. He has threatened to sue Senate Democrats if they refuse to swear him in as the chamber's only black member.

"Anything can happen," said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev. But he described the chances of Burris joining the Senate as "very difficult."

The second-ranking Democrat, Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin, acknowledged that his governor has the state constitutional authority to fill the vacancy. "The Senate of the United States has the U.S. constitutional responsibility to decide if Mr. Burris was chosen in a proper manner and that is what we're going to do," Durbin said.

Burris said he is scheduled to meet with Durbin on Wednesday and possibly could meet with Reid the same day.

Obama has said he agrees with Senate Democrats. But Burris told AP Radio on Sunday that he feels support from Obama.

"He's gotten some advice from other individuals and its not correct advice," Burris said.

While the Burris furor dominated public discussion, Illinois lawmakers quietly continued work that could lead to Blagojevich being removed from office.

Members of the Illinois House impeachment committee reviewed a 54-page draft summary of the allegations against the Democratic governor. Lawmakers said the summary did not include any recommendations on whether Blagojevich should be impeached. That will come after the panel finishes its fact-finding _ perhaps by the middle of this week.

The impeachment committee hopes to learn Monday whether it will be given access to some of the federal government's recordings of Blagojevich. It also wants Burris to testify about his conversations with the governor that led to the Senate appointment.

Burris intended to depart for Washington on Monday.

Reid said he expected to meet with Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky on Monday evening in hopes "we can solve this issue on a bipartisan basis."

Democratic leaders, however, plan to afford Burris few, if any, privileges even if he were to come to the Capitol with the proper credentials. Senate officials have said a Democrat will object to Burris being duly sworn with the rest of his class Tuesday and will propose that his credentials be reviewed for a time by the Senate Rules Committee. That would give Burris the status of a senator-elect and buy some time as Democrats hope Blagojevich will be removed from office before the committee completes its investigation.

Also Sunday, Reid denied a published report that he told Blagojevich in early December that he opposed the appointments of Democratic Reps. Jesse Jackson Jr. and Danny Davis to the Senate seat out of fear they would lose the seat to a Republican in the 2010 general election. Reid also allegedly opposed Emil Jones, the powerful black leader of the Illinois Senate, on the same grounds.

"I didn't tell him who not to appoint. He's making all this up to divert attention," Reid said. "Anyone who suggests anything racial is part of the Blagojevich spin to take (attention) away from the corruption." The Chicago Sun-Times reported Saturday that in an early December call to the governor, Reid urged Blagojevich to appoint either Illinois Veterans Affairs chief Tammy Duckworth or Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan.

Reid appeared on NBC's "Meet the Press," while Durbin and McConnell were on "This Week" on ABC.

Senator Reid was worned about this. He was worned about IMAGES and their importance. And, no matter what he now says..............

Senator Harry Reid has CHOSEN to be remembered as a bad guy who beat up on a qualified, competent and experienced old black man, forcing him to stand outside in the rain instead of properly seating him in the senate. Congratulations, Senator Reid for sealing and stamping your place in the history books and archives. You will stand next to former Alabama Governor, George Wallace for trying to prevent black high school students from entering a school to desegregate it.

This is just stupid. Reid is terrible, he is more of an enemy to his own party than to the Republicans. He should just announce that he is switching parties.

When a Democrat even talks about breaking the law they go full power to throw him out and punish him and everyone around him. When a Republican breaks the law they flip you off and change the law. What a double standard. Why must the Dems still cow-tow to the MINORITY Republicans still?

Harry Reid must believe He is made of Teflon with the crazy-wacky-sub-novice-unprofessional type decisions he keeps making.

This man has been wrong on everything, including the bailout which the senate could have stopped, but for the grace of Pelosi.

I think the DEM Senate placed him number one, thinking Republicans would retain a majority and executive branch, and Reid knows how to play the GOP game best.

Of course, the man (Reid) could already realise he's a gonna or anticipates his state will be in his favor?
How stupid can an argument get, this Burris guy is (in my opinion) not the brightest-light-bulb in the pack, but duly appointed. Reid wants to argue THIS?

This man has lost his mind!

If Democrats need to fight other Democrats in order for Burris to be seated, so be it. Extend the war to the NY and MN Senate seats by any means necessary, as well. Seat Burris Now!

The Democratic Senate leadership has shown a lack of intelligence in this appointment. In addition to a lack of firm legal ground to refuse Burris, they also give the perception that race is an issue. Perception means a lot in politics. Reid attempted to influence the Governor's appointment selection. On Meet The Press he said he could not remember the specifics of his conversation. I find his explanation dishonest, and deficient. He allegedly supported Lisa Madigan to the Illinois Senante seat. Madigan, as you recall filed a bogus Illinois Supreme Court filing to strip Blago of his statutory powers before he could make an appointment. Based on the rule of law, her filings were denied by the courts. Reid, Madigan, Durbin, Obama, and other Illinois politicians knew Blago would not support their candidates for the seat. So, they quickly said they would not accept anyone Blago appointed. In the meantime, the Democrats have opened the door for the Republicans to not seat Al Franken from Minn. Burris+Franken= two(2) Democratic Senate votes the Democrats willeffectively not have immediately, as they attempt to address the problems of the USA. All this has occurred after the Democrats talked about reaching sixty(60) votes in the Senate. The Democratic Senate leadership is pathetic, narrow minded and continue to play into the desgns of the Republicans

Why is does Rush keep bring up the Africa-American topic - this Senate position is to fill Obama's seat - an African-American.
Rush should sit quietly and keep his mouth shut.

Good question rosie. Bobby has been in the shadows for years, all of a sudden, he jumps into the spotlight and starts with the racial b.s like it is still the 60's.
Just one more OLD GUY that needs to take a time out.

If the House could seat Rep. Jefferson while under indictment for bribery ( a much stronger case with $100,000 of FBI cash stashed in his freezer ) . It is a tough case for the Senate to refuse to seat an apparently honorable Senator appointed by a Governor with similar, though weaker, legal issues.

Reid is reaching out for Republican help so he can have someone to blame when this all blows up. I don't think the GOP is going to take the bait.

It's funny to watch the people who confirmed torturer Mukasey and many others unite like the Klan to block a legally appointed Black Senator. Many of these Dems joined in a standing ovation to convicted felon and thief Ted Stevens of Alaska. Now, maybe the third or 4th Black to become a member of the US Senate is being threatened by the likes of Harry Reid and others, even though the two-bit US Attorney who pulled a midnight arrest on a sitting governor, as if he were some kind of flight risk, admits he doesn't have the evidence to guarantee an indictment from a Chicago Grand Jury against someone he claimed (evidently without evidence) would make Lincoln toss in his grave. The racism and contempt of the Senate Dems for the Rule of Law will be obvious (and explain why so many Dems supported the Patriot Acts, the Military Commissions Act, the Protect America Act, and FISA) when they simply refuse to permit a legally appointed Black Senator (the third from Illinois) from taking his rightful seat in a body known for racism and excluding Blacks, not very different from the racism of the Klan, by excluding a qualified Black from what is now once again an all-White club. Harry Reid says "screw the rule of law", let's have a bi-partisan cheer for Ted Stevens, the thief, as Stevens is really no more crooked than the rest of us from both parties, except he got caught.

The governor of Illinois may be under a large dark heavy cloud, but he had (and has) the legal authority to appoint Burris regardless of the emotions and politics of his appointing anyone. Unless the appointment of Burris specifically, not the governor's virtue, is indictable, let Burris serve in the Senate, however ineffectively, until the people of Illinois decide otherwise. Do not deprive Illinois of its second vote in the Senate; to do so would be like giving the opposition an extra vote until this mess is otherwise cleared up, which wouldn't seem to be soon.

It's called "due process", the Rule of Law and the presumption of innocence. Anyone who opposes Burris supports trampling on the Constitution just as Bush did, so long as trampling on the Constitution furthers their own cheap, narrow political goals. Blago is innocent until proven guilty and Fitzgerald doesn't even have enough to indict Blago before a Chicago Grand Jury.

Fitzgerald should dismiss the work of fiction he called a complaint and should be investigated for prosecutorial misconduct in terms of his handling of Blago. He did a midnight raid against a sitting governor who was never a flight risk without enough evidence to get an indictment. Fitzshould be investigated and removed from Blago's case immediately and Attorney General Madigan should have sanctions brought against her for her frivolous lawsuit before the Illinois Supreme Court to have Blago removed when he has done nothing wrong.

I have no personal allegiance to Blago but believe after 8 years of watching the Constitutional protections that once made the US the envy of the rest of the world systematically eliminated in favor of short term political expediency, the Blago case is an outrage and progressive should support the Constitution, the Rule of Law and the presumption of innocence.

Appointment is legal, as far as what is publically known. Blago isn't guilty of anything yet and he still has the authroity to assign the seat. So long as there was no subterfuge in Burris's selection itself, and Burris is qualitfied by Constitutional law, he is to allowed the seat. The Senate has a right to inquire as to any discrepancy in the selection.

There is NO requirement that the Governor pick "the best possible candidate" as there is no such thing.

The race card move was brilliant on his part.

Congress will play a major role in the Obama administration. I expect the more activist Congress people to hold more hearings, promote more serious legislation, and get transparency from the executive department. Furthermore, that is a good thing. Let us make our judgment in June and see what we think then about Democratic government.

Harry Reid is still hopeing to get cooperation from the Republicans. We'll see how that works out, too.
