Burris To DC: "The Lord Has Ordained" This

WASHINGTON — Senate Democrats struggled to avert a showdown steeped in race and corruption Monday as a defiant Roland Burris declared, "I'm a United States senator" and flew to the capital to claim President-elect Barack Obama's old seat in Congress.

Even as he sought to pressure fellow Democrats, Burris signaled there were limits to his rebelliousness. "I'm not going to make a scene. I don't want to give you all a circus," he told reporters asking whether he intended to breach protocol by attempting to walk uninvited onto the Senate floor on Tuesday.

The 71-year-old veteran of Illinois politics was still en route from his home state when Majority Leader Harry Reid announced he would not be permitted to take his seat when other new lawmakers are sworn into office. Burris "has not been certified by the state of Illinois" Reid said, a reference to incomplete paperwork that barely begins to describe the dispute.

While Burris has not been accused of any wrongdoing, he was named to the Senate last week by Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, who faces charges of having attempted to sell the seat.

Senate officials said it was possible Reid would try and have Burris' case referred to the Rules Committee for review, a move that would effectively sidetrack the issue while the complicated political and legal situation in Illinois could be sorted out. They spoke on condition of anonymity, saying they were not authorized to discuss possible developments.

Reid, D-Nev., had appeared to leave open the possibility of a compromise over the weekend after failing to persuade Blagojevich to leave the seat vacant. Burris is to meet privately on Wednesday with the majority leader in his office a few paces off the Senate floor.

Burris, who is black, downplayed the issue of race at a news conference before boarding a flight from Chicago to Washington _ even though supporters have given it prominence.

"I cannot control my supporters. I have never in my life, in all my years of being elected to office, thought anything about race," he said.

He said repeatedly during the day that he is a senator, but in fact he is not and cannot be unless he is administered the oath of office.

Other controversy aside, Democrats privately expressed concern that Burris would not be able to hold the seat in a special election that must be held in 2010. Reid has denied that political calculations are involved, but one Democratic official suggested that one potential outcome would be for Burris to be seated and pledge to retire in 2010.

Burris sidestepped the issue at an airport news conference before leaving Illinois, saying, "I can't negotiate in the press."

The Illinois seat was one of two in dispute on the eve of the ceremonial opening of the new Congress.

In Minnesota, the state Canvassing Board certified results showing Democrat Al Franken winning a recount over Republican Sen. Norm Coleman, but a legal challenge probably will keep that race in limbo for now.

Reid called Franken the winner _ in a claim that Republican National Committee chairman Mike Duncan swiftly rejected.

Despite losing several seats last November, Senate Republicans have the ability to block any quick attempt by Democrats to allow Franken to be sworn in, and an aide said Reid would not press the issue on Tuesday.

Reid and Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky arranged an early evening meeting to discuss the two seats.

The uncertain Illinois script played out as a federal judge granted prosecutors more time to seek a formal indictment of Blagojevich, and state lawmakers marched methodically toward impeachment proceedings that could result in his removal from office. He was arrested last year and charged with trying to sell Obama's seat.

Blagojevich appointed Burris to fill take Obama's former Senate seat last week, defying the wishes of Senate Democrats who had warned that anyone he named would be tainted by association. His selection of the 71-year-old former officeholder instantly exposed rifts among Democrats, evident at a send-off Burris received in a Chicago church on Sunday night.

Rep. Bobby Rush, D-Ill., called the Senate "last bastion of plantation politics," and said blacks had been "excluded systematically for too long."

There were mounting legal complications, as well.

While Blagojevich has signed formal appointments papers, Jesse White, the Illinois secretary of state, has not, and Senate rules require that signature.

Burris, in turn, has gone to court hoping to win an order for White to sign the necessary paperwork, and has also threatened to sue to take his seat in the Senate.

I can't find the quotes referenced in the headline anywhere in the article, and I'm interested in reading about them. Does anyone know where to find the actual quotes?

Obama said no Blago appointee should be seated. The Democratic Senators wrote a letter saying no Blago appointee should be seated. That should be the end of this farce. The IL secretary of state has refused to certify the appointment. There should be no question about this slimy appointment. It is designed to allow the governor to pretend he's still a player and it shouldn't be allowed to happen. Reid quakes on this and his leadership position should be withdrawn.

See how easy it is to divide this nation along racial lines? Bobby Rush should be ashamed of himself. I'm white and I offer no apology for it. But I've lived the shame of whites who have dismissed blacks as inferior and have tried to keep them outside the ring of success. Did Barack Obama EVER call anyone a racist? When he was accused of being sexist, did he EVER retort, "OK, if you disagree with me, you're a racist."?

NO! NEVER! Keep race the hell out of the equation. Keep God out of the equation. We have two weeks -- TWO WEEKS, PEOPLE -- before we get a president of outstanding character and credibility. Don't let him down, and don't let ourselves down. We're better than that! We deserve better than that.

No way Burris should be seated in the Senate and the fact he accepted, demands to be seated and with his past election losses for higher office... It's obvious this guy is a TOOL!! But I am reading from some columnists (mostly black) how Burris is getting a bad deal. I am white and you can call me whatever you want. But this smells to high heaven and for the black supporters of Burris to be playing the race card over this just flat p_sses me off. I hope Reid stands his ground and tells Burris to go F himself. i love the argument Blago has not been convicted of anything. Big freaking deal! I can listen to tapes and hear Blago blatantly trying to sell Obama's senate seat. What? It's not Blago's voice. I am just really p_ssed that Blago is trying to get away with this BS. I say have a special election now and if a Republican wins ( most likely a moderate) so be it!

Rove style politics=decide goal+organize talking points+disseminate to republicans+disseminate to media+republicans repeat+media repeat+democrats accept and repeat+public hears talking points+repeat+repeat=public accepts talking points+dissenters beat over the head with accepted talking points. After success, move quickly to next position.

Examples:
Post 911 world+everything changed.
Saddam Hussien+weapons of mass destruction.
I don't support the war+We must support the troops.
I don't support the war+thank you for your service
war will pay for itself+Iraq has oil reserves
credit frozen+impending recession+wall street bail out+too big to fail
big 3 automakers disfunctional+unions bad+no bail out
appoinment tainted+do not accept

Basic marketing and public relations concepts. Worked 8 years. Democrats never know what hit them.

Who cares if Burris runs for re-election? He'll never even win the primary. His name is mud.

He'd be called Senator Burris for life. And how long does a Senator have to serve to earn that pension and all those benefits? This should not be allowed to happen.

This is simply political manuvering by Dems to ensure they can lock up that Senate seat for 2010; they could give a rat's ass about Burress. Look aside from the embattled governor, and tell me honestly why this man is unqualified for the job. Because I've looked, and I just don't see it.
I'm aware that Dem policy makers are livid after extolling on Blagojevich the true isolation he would know if he picked that replacement. They wanted to say that that would preserve the integrity of the process, and hence, the Senate. Speaking as a Dem, and I gotta say its kind of hippocritical, but when flexing political muscle, sometimes stuff gets broken; it should NOT be this man's career in public service.

Something fair to the people of Illinois, whose interests should get top billing, would be to suspend the seating of Burris until Hot Rod is impeached( a pretty certain event, should he not resign, which eventually I think he will) and the Lt. Gov. is sworn in. He then appoints a 3 member panel to examine Burris' qualification and interview him, with regular senatorial-level background security check. Results reviewed and posted within 30 days, with panel recommendation for confirmation to sign the certificate or not. Based on if he is qualified, not Blagojevich disqualified.
It's fairer to everyone.

First off, Burris is 71. He should have the smarts to tell the Democratic leadership that he will do his two years and then go - not running for re-election. And he should promise, that as he has always done, he will be a loyal Democrat and not do a Palin on them (a - act wierd or stupid, and b -go rogue).

Once these assurances are given, someone should ask the Lieutenant Governor (or whoever would take over for Gov. Twerp) if he would have major problems appointing Burris for the two year term.

Then Reid, Durbin, and the prospective new Gov. could announce as one that Burris would be seated for the two year term because the new Gov also thought he was a fine guy, above suspicion, and would allow the state to be represented IMMEDIATELY. Gov. Twerp could be dealt with on a less than EMERGENCY basis, and the Senate could concentrate on the financial crisis.

Burris may want it, and he may be a Jesus-freak, but no one is saying that he is a bad guy. Instead of another state filled with politicos who are trying for this job, let them just run for it in 2010.

And if anyone asks why, tell them - The country is in real trouble. This issue/problem/glitch cannot be allowed to sidetrack our government in a time of crisis. A solution has been achieved, we will again concentrate on WHAT'S REALLY IMPORTANT.

Well he thinks god ordained him into political office, so umm YES!
11:40 PM on 01/05/2009
If PO thinks he's a good man, why not just tell the Senate to seat him.
05:27 AM on 01/06/2009
he disagreed with the actions of blago.

The shame in it all is that of this, Burris does not seem to have the integrity nor the fortitude to stand back until the issue with Blago is done with.

Being an african american male, and understanding the disillusionment I"ve dealt with in politics all of my life growing up in NYC, It is hard for me to comprehend why Burris does not understand the cloud that will be over his head if he were to be seated at this point. The fact that he even accepted it casts a shadow.

If he is so confident in his ability, and has the support of the people, let them speak for you.

Let the crisis with Blago go away and let the appointment come naturally.

Very well said! I completely agree. After the ethics commotion with Blago trying to sell the seat just a week or two prior to his promoting Burris, most everyone I know is wondering how much Burris gave or paid for Blago's support.

I am also dissapointed by Burris trying to play the race card, and using the 'God' factor when discussing the nomination. He is just losing more and more points with each passing day...

It is so sad for this 71 year old man to displace such pathetic craving for the senate job for which he wasn't able to get through 2 elections. Worse yet is to claim that the Lord has ordained him. He's not stable and shouldn't be seated..
10:23 PM on 01/05/2009
Any man who is ARROGANT enough to claim ""I Am The Solution To The Problem" and the lord ordained this, should be BOOTED OUT OF GOV'T OFFICE IMMEDIATELY!!

Burris is the last kind of politician who should be in gov't.
Enough, already, of the politicians who "speak to god" everytime THEY WANT THEIR WAY.
