President-elect Barack Obama has approached CNN's chief medical correspondent, Sanjay Gupta, to be the country's next surgeon general, the cable news network said Tuesday. CNN said it has kept Gupta from reporting on health care policy and other matters involving the incoming Obama administration since learning he was under consideration for the post.

A Democrat with knowledge of the discussions over the surgeon general spot cautioned that there was not yet a final decision on who would fill the post. The person spoke on a condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media on the matter.

Obama's transition office did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Gupta hosts "House Call" on CNN, contributes reports to CBS News, and writes a column for Time magazine. He is a neurosurgeon and is on the faculty at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta. During the Clinton administration, he was a White House fellow and special adviser to then-first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton.

The surgeon general typically isn't heavily involved in shaping an administration's policy, but it can be a very effective bully pulpit. Past surgeons general have proved instrumental in battling tobacco and AIDS.

Having such a well-known TV personality could bring the surgeon general attention not seen since C. Everett Koop help the position under President Ronald Reagan. Koop is best known for pushing to make AIDS a public health issue rather than a moral issue, and Reagan faced pressure to fire him. Koop has said Reagan never interfered.

CNN said Gupta would not comment on the discussions and released a statement that said, "Since first learning that Dr. Gupta was under consideration for the surgeon general position, CNN has made sure that his on-air reporting has been on health and wellness matters and not on health care policy or any matters involving the new administration."

CBS News is a unit of CBS Corp.; CNN is owned by Time Warner.

More details from the Washington Post's Howard Kurtz:

The offer followed a two-hour Chicago meeting in November with Obama, who said that Gupta could be the highest-profile surgeon general in history and would have an expanded role in providing health policy advice, the sources said. Gupta later spoke with Tom Daschle, Obama's White House health czar and nominee for Health and Human Services secretary, and other advisers to the president-elect.

The Michigan-born son of Indian and Pakistani parents, Gupta has always been drawn to health policy. He was a White House fellow in the late 1990s, writing speeches and crafting policy for Hillary Clinton. His appointment would give the administration a prominent official of Southwest Asian descent and a skilled television spokesman.

Jacob Goldstein of the Wall Street Journal offers:

There's a certain logic to picking a TV talking head to be surgeon general, because the surgeon general is largely a talking head. The top doc does oversee the 6,000-member Commissioned Corps of the U.S. Public Health Service, but the real work of the job is traveling around the country, using the job as a bully pulpit to advance a public health agenda.

In this media-saturated era, who could do that better than a doc who's famous for explaining health issues on cable TV?

sanjay's tv personality has a kind of unserious, gadfly aspect- no sense of dealing with big issues. a more serious, structured role as attorney general would help him land medical and legal show guest spots eventually. eventually he'll wnat to host some type of medical/legal reality series.
attorney general could be a nice career move for sanjay right now.

I can't believe or understand why ppl would have a problem with this. I've seen some say he's only a TV personality, um, you are aware he's an ACTUAL neuro-surgeon, right? Besides, the reason he's so popular on TV is - DUH!- BECAUSE of his expertise!! Why wouldn't Obama want that???

I've seen some say that he didn't want Universal Health Care, well, if agreeing with Obama on everything is so damn important, then Clinton wouldn't be SoS in waiting right now, would she?? Duh!!! He will be working with OBAMA'S policies, not his own, and regardless, Obama wouldn't mind having a vigorous debate to figure out what to do. He's said that 2 TRILLION times, and NO ONE ABSORBS THAT ITTY BITTY PIECE OF INFO!!! Honestly, you don't DESERVE the kind of change that he'll hopefully give, at least sometimes it feels that way. Not because you don't worship him, but because he can't move left or right without you ppl TURNING ON HIM, and not giving him a chance to prove himself. I'm sick of it. Blech.

He does not believe cannabis has any medical benefits. That's enough to strike him off the list,in my opinion.

This would make a lot of sense. Obama surrounds himself with intelligent and strong experienced in order to enhance his own expertise and expand his available data. He could learn a lot from a medical person of this calibre and amazing range of skills. Although it puzzles me why a brain surgeon would want to be a TV personality, Dr. Gupta definitely has all the parts to do a good job as Surgeon General. Dr. Koop was the last one with a similar level of influence. He would be another charismatic personality bringing more power to the administration as it be wrestles with medical issues in the next few years. The fight to get national healthcare - which has been going on for almost 65 years, needs as many charismatic, experienced and respected people as possible advocating for effective change to really get it done.

I say it's high time we had an Indian in the White House.....this is an excellent choice.

I've been living in Manhattan all of my life and now in 2009, 90% of all my doctors are of Indian origin....Indian healers and doctors arrive in New York with more of an open mind to alternative medicine and ancient methods of healing, plus they seem more focused and earnest and not so much in it for the money.

India is a gift to New York.

I like Indians. My boss in an Indian. But this is NOT a reason for Gupka to be the Surgeon General. Sorry.

You sound awfully like "I like blacks. I have many black friends."
Those who say that about blacks are generally racists, and going by your comment, I am thinking you are too.

Not a good reason to hire, just because he's Indian. As far as Indian doctors and alternative medicine, it must depend on where you live. I'm on Long Island and, yes, in the clinic I have to go to (no insurance) most of the doctors are Indian and all they do is push pharmaceuticals. I found this to be the case in a couple of immediate medical care facilities, too. And, like Sanjay, they do not want to see universal health care.

I love the way Obama is organizing a staff and cabinet that looks like the many faces of America's citizenry. Gupta would be a great choice for S.G. This will be the first time in America's history that every group in the country is represented at that level of government at the same time. Has he appointed a Native/First American yet?

He would be great! Gupta is qualified and is no stranger to the country. Maybe this time the Surgeon General can be bigger role that Americans will pay attention to. I don't know about you but the most I knew about the Surgeon General was in that warning in the back of Cigarettes ( when I used to smoke). Call me out of touch but I'm being brutally honest.. I had no clue what the Surgeon General's role was. I guess anytime you place a popular face in anything we are sure to pay attention to what is going on. My guess is that by choosing Gupta they plan to take the Surgeon General position to a more open level, a more knowledgeable level. Gupta doesn't strike me as a behind the desk shut your mouth, keep away from the people person. He'll definitely be out there educating the country and being more vocal and present than past Surgeon Generals.

I say great move for the transition team on this one!

People are making a much bigger deal about this than is really necessary. Surgeon General is mostly a figurehead position with no realr power behind the title. It's a sad state of affairs when the last memorable SG is now more familiar to the general public for his Life Alert commercials (I wear one too") than anything he did or said while holding the position.

Very few people, if anyone, even knows who was Surgeon General under Bush, do they?

Sanjaya for Surgeon General? Wasn't he on American Idol?

Oh well, picking Gupta makes about as much sense.

Gupta is just a shill for health insurance companies, big medicine and big pharma. That's were he gets PAID.

He flat out lied about the facts in Michael Moores movie "Sicko" and refused to own up to his lies.

If Congress depends on him for a recommendation on universal health care, we are screwed!

Yeah, I lost all respect for him after I saw that piece. He did admit to some of the mistakes but the entire piece was biased and intended to deceive.

Sorry, but everyone is judging Dr. Gupta on the wrong issues. Yes I'm well aware of his spat with Moore (and how wrong he was) but the Surgeon General does not deal with Health Insurance or Health Administration issues. He/She deals with how the nation should approach illnesses and prioritize them which is something completely different that requires a completely different skill set.

Last time I checked, doctors don't usually make good administrators or accountants. The problem with our health system (lack of access) has more to do with the finances and administration of our health system then the identification and social stigmas of illnesses.

he also thinks 800,000 americans should be being repeatedly raped in tiny cages for possessing small amounts of plant material that has never killed anyone.

I don't want any of his advice.

Sanjay Gupta is a poor choice. He just toes the standard line of a high profile media doctor. There is no compassion in his televised practice--just more of the same. (For proof, as if needed, check out the Michael Moore interview.) Don't the people deserve a strong health advocate in these difficult times when health care is all but unobtainable for so many? Gupta just represents the status quo--that's not change, it's more of the same. Sure, he's not white, which could add a little to the racial mix of this administration, but so was Condoleeza Rice and look what a disaster she turned out to be--all lies and shell games.

Yes, and lie about facts with a straight face. We've had plenty of straight faced liars for the past eight years. Reminds me of Condoleeza Rice.
