CHICAGO — Five people were shot as spectators left a crowded high school basketball game Friday in what police called a possibly gang-related attack that sent panicked students running into a snowy street on the city's South Side.

Five males _ three in serious condition and two in critical _ were taken from Paul Laurence Dunbar Vocational Career Academy around 8 p.m., said Chicago Fire Department spokeswoman Eve Rodriguez. Hospital spokespeople said later that at least three were expected to be treated and released.

"It was crazy. It was like killers on the loose," said Joshua Glaze, 15, a freshman at the school.

The game was in overtime and some students began to leave the building, Glaze said.

A vehicle then drove up and a person or people inside started shooting into the crowd, said Chicago Police Superintendent Jody Weis.

No suspect has been identified or arrested, but the shooting was "isolated" and possibly gang-related, Weis said. Two hundred officers were in the area looking for suspects, he said.

Dunbar freshman Shaneisha Turman, 15, said she saw a silver truck pull up to a bus stop outside the school. People inside the truck pretended to fire a gun and then "they really started shooting," she told the Chicago Tribune.

People were shouting, "'They're shooting!'" Turman said. "It was a lot of people shouting and running."

Police blocked access to streets at least two blocks from the high school to make way for ambulances and police cars.

Andres Durbak, director of the city schools' Office of Safety and Security, said video taken in and around the school has been handed over to police.

"This is a tragedy," Durbak said.

Police spokeswoman Monique Bond declined to characterize the victims beyond gender and would not say whether they had attended the basketball game. She added that they were "not necessarily students."

The high school has about 1,600 students and is the alma mater of Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Hudson.

If all High School basketball attendees were allowed to carry concealed fire arms, they could have stopped the drive by shooters. We can't blame guns for this. After all, those guys in the car would have caused just as mush mayhem by throwing rocks, right NRA apologists?

handguns are against the law to possess in Chicago.

That didn't prevent this crime did it?

Years ago we stopped being active parents and close familes. Now we wonder why the kids are so bad.

Very true ! ....in the inner-cities 71% born-out-of-wedlock doesn't help.

Aren't guns great? You can commit cowardly acts like this one without being anywhere near your targets! I have nothing against legitmate hunters, but the only purpose of most guns is to kill another human being. I am sure I would be serving prison time if I had owned a gun when I caught my now ex-husband cheating on me with his first cousin. Guns make is so easy to kill one another; at least with a knife you have to get up close and personal and actually run the risk of getting hurt yourself.
Don't bother to quote the 2nd amendment at me, it is poorly worded and open to various interpretations.
If BART officers were allowed only tasers, a young man would be alive and with his family, instead he was shot in the back and murdered. (didn't shooting someone in the back used to we considered the act of a coward?)

The problem with outlawing guns is they would just end up in the hands of criminals and government. Then the populalace really WOULD be sitting ducks. From every angle.

So there are 506 murders in Chicago. What is the rate per capita and how does that compare to other towns and cities? Chicago has a lower rate per capita than Dallas TX, Roanoke VA, Nashville TN and 45 other cities.

509 and in a city of 3 million and 9.5 million in the Chicago Metro area that's less then 1 percent of the population. This isn't Wichita it's a big city. It wasn't 509 drive by shootings either, there were domestic violence killings and any number of types of murders. This is a media scam to get everyone to read more papers and watch more news. You're more likely to get killed by someone you know. I get sick of the media exploiting intercity crime to get ratings. Look the statistics up on the DOJ website African Americans and Hispanics don't commit nearly as much crime as whites and that’s all you see on the news. Black crime is juicy, Black on White crime priceless, ratings gold!

If you think that's bad. What about the incident that occurred a few weeks ago, when the fight broke out around the train station in Oakland, California. The police claims that he mistaken his gun for his taser gun and shot that young man twice in the head in front of a crowd of people. They showed this on CNN, Thursday evening. A riot has kicked off and the policeman apparently resigned. He needs to be arrested.

Guess you couldn't find a way to bash blacks for that one, huh? But this one is right up your alley, right? Stories like this really attracts flies like you.

But the 'lefties only want to talk about Iraq. Remember, Chicago's mayor is democrat as is EVERY city council member. So don't talk about Chicago unless you can blame the republicans and independents for it.

Huffington Post please remove this young lady's name from the article. Revealing her name potentially puts her life in danger. How many times have we been told by a news organization "a source said" change her name to "source" to protect her identity. Please.

Dear Mr. President-Elect, please change the mission of our military. Have them police the streets of America. We are at war. Our cities don't have the funds to fight it. If we don't get serious about ridding our communities of drugs and guns, no amount of stimulus packages will save us because the root is rotting. Poverty breeds ignorance and crime and it's going to spread.

Hell no. We're not gonna turn our country into a police state.

We need to invest in education and create jobs not use military force in our streets...worst idea ever.
