Exxon Mobil CEO Rex Tillerson said on Thursday it would be difficult to meet President-elect Barack Obama's goal to significantly boost U.S. alternative energy production.

In a speech at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia, Obama said he wanted the United States to double its output of alternative energy sources during the next three years as part of his plan to revive the American economy.

"I think that's going to be very challenging to do," Tillerson told reporters following a speech at the Woodrow Wilson Center in Washington.

I personally, don't care what Exxon thinks about anything.

Just the sort of upbeat attitude we need in challenging times from a money-first corporate Philistine. Go into the light, Tillerson, go into the light.

Yes, we understand Exxon doesn't believe in renewable clean energy. Only in monopolies.

What he's really saying is he hopes it doesn't work because it will cut into his profits.

The high cost of fuel this past year did serious damage to our economy and society. After a brief reprieve gas prices are inching back up again. Our nation should not allow other nations to have such power over us and our economy . We have so much available to us in the way of technology and free sources of energy. WE seriously need to get on with becoming an energy independent nation. We are spending billions upon billions in bail out dollars. Why not spend some of those billions in getting alternative energy projects set up. We could create clean cheap energy, millions of badly needed new green jobs and lessen our dependence on foreign oil all in one fell swoop. I just read an eye opening book by Jeff Wilson called The Manhattan Project of 2009. It would cost the equivalent of 60 cents per gallon to drive and charge an electric car.If all gasoline cars, trucks, and SUV's instead had plug-in electric drive trains, the amount of electricity needed to replace gasoline is about equal to the estimated wind energy potential of the state of North Dakota. Why don't we use some of the billions in bail out money to bail us out of our dependence on foreign oil? This past year the high cost of fuel so seriously damaged our economy and society that the ripple effects will be felt for years to come. www.themanhattanprojectof2009.com

Just grow Industrial Hemp and watch these criminals at Exxon Mobil have a fit...!

Of course Obama won't allow this simple hugely beneficial solution that would create so many jobs and also enhance our national security and energy independence..!

Does anyone else in the world do this?

Of course it will be difficult - with Exxon fighting it every step of the way. I think I'll stop buying Exxon gas just because of this tool.

And by the way WHY is Huufpost allowing ads claiming GCC is a myth and a hoax????

I stopped buying Exxon gas, unless it was an absolute have to get gas in the car emergency, after the Valdez incident...(hated the fact that they combined with Mobil as that was one less competitor plus had been using Mobil 1 synthetic oil since '76).

So how is this really a surprise that the CEO of the top company making ungodly unheard of profits in fossil fuels is an Obama skeptic? Please, the guy that stands the most to lose always is the first barking with "doom and gloom".

As if he would ever say anything else. Consider the source folks. If there were one barrel of oil left on the whole planet he would still say the exact same thing.

Wow,

Talk about making us want to prove the bad guys wrong. Thanks Exxon for the mojo.

OK Exxon, Obama can't meet every goal, so we should just give up and poison our children for your proffit. Nice.

Any excuse not to have to try.

Like an idiot, I accidentally gassed-up at Exxon yesterday...never again! What a bunch of arrogant a-holes. After they finish destroying our planet, do they have plans to have their kids living on the moon or something? Maybe that's why Bush wants to go back (if we really went there inthe first place) to the moon by 2020.
