WASHINGTON — Get ready for the in-law in chief.

President-elect Barack Obama's mother-in-law, Marian Robinson, is moving into the White House at least temporarily to join Michelle Obama and the two children, transition officials said Friday.

That's good news not just for late-night comics, but for 10-year-old Malia and 7-year-old Sasha. During the campaign, Robinson retired from her job as a bank executive secretary to help care for her granddaughters.

"Mrs. Robinson will be coming with the family to help the girls get acclimated, and she will determine in the coming months whether or not she wants to stay in D.C. permanently," said Katie McCormick Lelyveld, spokeswoman for Michelle Obama.

Michelle Obama also made another hotly awaited decision: She's keeping the White House chef. Cristeta Comerford took the job in 2005 and is the first woman and first minority to serve as executive chef.

"Cristeta Comerford brings such incredible talent to the White House operation and came very highly regarded from the Bush family," Michelle Obama said in a statement released by the transition team. "Also the mom of a young daughter, I appreciate our shared perspective on the importance of healthy eating and healthy families."

Plenty of in-laws have taken up residence in the White House before, not to mention cousins, grandchildren and other relatives.

"Throughout history there have been many extended first families in office," said Robert Watson, author of "Life in the White House."

Ulysses S. Grant's father-in-law, Richard Dent, stayed for several years. Harry S. Truman's mother-in-law, Madge Gates Wallace, lived there, too, and was critical of her son-in-law.

"She never liked him. She always felt that Bess had married below her station," said Myra Gutin, a first lady historian and professor at Ryder University in New Jersey.

"For his part, he was gracious. Whatever Mother Wallace wanted, she pretty much got."

Mamie Eisenhower's mother also had extended stays, but like her daughter she tended to sleep until noon, said Maria Downs of the White House Historical Association.

Even the presidents' mothers can be tough. Lillian Carter stayed in the White House and got on well with her son Jimmy, but Gutin said that when he first told her, "Mom, I'm going to run for president," she replied, "President of what?"

By all accounts, Obama has a good relationship with his mother-in-law. She had put off retirement for years, but finally retired last summer to take care of the granddaughters while their parents campaigned.

"She didn't want anyone else taking care of the kids but her," McCormick Lelyveld said. "She wanted to be the one there."

Barack Obama has called her one of the unsung heroes of his campaign, and spoke of holding her hand on election night.

But when asked by "60 Minutes" if Robinson would move in, he quipped: "Well, I don't tell my mother-in-law what to do. But I'm not stupid. That's why I got elected president, man."

I love it!!! I have the same relationship with my mother as Michelle has with hers and I couldn't imagine my children growing up without their grandmother. This is wonderful to see that not all in laws are horrible whatsoever and family unity. She and Barack have a fabulous relationship and I am sure she is someone who reminds him of his own mother. Barack is a true man in every sense by wanting to surround himself with strong women - most men can't handle it.

Remember folks, you only get one mother....you got yours and Michelle has hers!

I think it is really wonderful that Marian Robinson will be joining her family in the White House.

I hope she is able to come and go whenever she wants for the next eight years.

We are so incredibly blessed to have this family as our First Family. What incredible role models of love, beauty, grace, generosity of spirit, and what true family means. I am speechless even though I knew this was going to happen. I hope we all know how lucky we are! Yes, we worked hard to get this man elected, but he worked hard to maintain his integrity and will continue to do so. With all these great women surrounding him at home, he surely will be kept honest (I say this with the utmost affection for them all)! Yea, First Granny!!!

Yep, just ask his aunt & half-brother how blessed they are to be part of that family...

They are from another country. He didn't grow up around them or knowing them, and he is NOT responsible for every one that is related to him by blood. Get over your stupidity and ignorance!

OK it's official, Obama is doing the biggest no no in marriage, never let the in law come live with you. She is going to be nagging him about keeping his desk in the oval office clean, and not wearing shoes on the rug and coming up to the residence for dinner on time. Oh boy!!!

I love these pictures! How refreshing and positive. I think Mrs. Robinson will be a great role model for many parents in America. I can only hope that the bigots and nay sayers will get a life an maybe even an education. claudiatucsonaz

Obama makes me looking at my mother-in-law differently and who knows, it may actually change the way they treat us children-in-law. If you treat your son/daughter in-law like they are your own instead of "someone else's child" then one can also have such a warm relationship like the one Obama has with his mom-in-law. When I saw him taking her on stage with Biden's mom, I was just so moved and in an envious way wish I had a similar relationship with my -in laws, instead of the civil policitially correct one I currently have.

I applaud Mr. and Mrs. Obama for this.

Multi-generational households should be the norm instead of sending our parents and grandparents to rot in warehouses waiting to die.

Leadership by example is probably the most powerful form of leadership.

This is very positive for the Obama family and the nation. This move flies in the face of the myth of the mother in law from hell and also makes the case for grandparents playing a more active role with thie grand children.

As remarkable of a story Obama has been I think Michelle's story has been that much more specaticlar. Obama had the advantage of having two college educated parents while Michelle came from a working class home. Bravo to this awesome family.

It was done on TV years ago: Farmer's Daughter, with William Windom and Inger Stevens...with the fabulous Cathleen Nesbitt as the Granny...I am sure that Michelle's Mother will be wonderful, but personally, I'd take Cathleen Nesbitt any day.

So, how much is Obama going to pay us to allow her to live in the house that is owned by the American people. If he or she does not pay back the government, then a 1099 for the value of the room & board and any other benefits must be provided.

It is great that there is a solid family in place. I wish them all well. I also hope the media leaves the Obama girls alone - completely unlike what the media normally does to families of presidents and particularly candidates.

Are you under the impression that whatever room Mrs. Robinson takes would otherwise be taken by a rent paying boarder?

Its absurd to suggest she should pay rent, particularly when it seems like she will probably watch the girls when Michelle and Barack are out of town on offical business, saving the expense of a nanny.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:38 AM on 01/12/2009

Using your logic, the girls, as well as Michelle, should have to "pay rent". Afterall, we elected Barack, not Barack, Michelle, the girls and grandma. Get real. Stop hating. Did you ask Laura Bush to give back? Im sure she ate a few meals, her girls had bedrooms, etc. PLEASE get over it.

America needs to see more examples of extended families living under the same roof. Family members have become isolated from each other. Children need more contact with grandparents or other older relatives. It is an experience on which one cannot put a price.
