Gregg Allman

SAVANNAH, Ga. — Gregg Allman almost had a few less silver dollars after someone broke into his southeast Georgia home and stole a coin collection, knives and unreleased concert recordings, police said.

The Allman Brothers Band singer and keyboardist, 61, was out of town when burglars broke into his home in Richmond Hill, 20 miles south of Savannah.

"He's upgrading his security," detective Mickey Sands of the Bryan County Sheriff's Department said Thursday.

Sands said the burglars took a case containing Allman's collection of 19th-century silver dollars and two safes filled with gold coins, personal papers, collectible knives and several tapes of unreleased recordings.

Investigators recovered all of Allman's belongings except a handgun.

Craig Matthew George, 27, and Brittney Ann Sahlberg, 19, both of Richmond Hill, were charged two days after the Dec. 27 burglary. Sands said Allman knew them but would not say how.

George and Sahlberg have been released from jail on bond. Neither had a listed phone number in Richmond Hill. Sands and District Attorney Tom Durden said they did not know if either has an attorney.

Allman was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with the Allman Brothers Band in 1995. Songs he's written include "Midnight Rider," "Whipping Post" and "Melissa."

I can only go to one Beacon show this year. Not like 5 shows in '07. I'm glad Gregg is healthy. Warren, Derek and Oteil can still bring it. Looking for AUD recordings of the '00 summer tour when Jimmy Herring filled in for Dickey. Much to trade. Please let me know. Many thanks.

"The Fillmore Concerts" is unquestionably one of the top five rock albums of all time.

Love the Allman Brothers. Miss the early lineup, but they are still a great band. Glad Greg got his stuff back. Update that security system!!

The Allman Brothers is one of the greatest bands of all time and are still great. I saw them at Boyne Mountain in Michigan in 2007. Greatest concert I've seen. They are really professional and the quality of music is so smooth.

Some trivia, Rolling Stone Magazine rates four Allman Brother guitar players in the top 100. Duane Allman of course is number two all time behind Hendrix. The others are Warren Haines, Dicky Betts, and Derek Trucks. They are the only band with that many on the list. Haines and Trucks still tour with the band.

I have a hard time imagining watching the Allman Brothers Band without Duane and Dicky Betts.

Derek Trucks is absolutely fantastic. He is currently the best slide guitar player in music.

Pull up on You Tube and watch him play "desdemona," "rockin horse" and "dreams." It is great music.

I am a fan of the ol' Allman Bros. Gregg's photo reminds me of pictures I've seen of Robert E. Lee.

Yes! How funny. He does look like Lee!

Yes, that's it. I was racking my brain.

Bottom line, Greg got all but the gun and that will find it's way back soon enough.

I've seen many comments calling the Brothers music "Southern Rock". While they are generally considered the Godfathers of SR, I like what Greg had to say during an interview I had the privilege of doing with him. He's said the same thing in other interviews too.

His opinion is that Rock n Roll was "invented" in the South. Why say Southern Rock? Memphis was the area where Gospel, Bluegrass, Country, Jazz and certainly Blues all came together. Those are the main ingredients of R&R!

The Allman Brothers Band were and still are the masters of "Fusion Music". Combining all of those elements into their songs.

They're either really brave or really stupid - Allman seems like a tough character. I'd be too afraid to take anything from him, especially if he's anything like the role he played in Rush. That character scared the bejeezus out of me.

If you are robbed then physical contact is made. If you're burglarized a B&E is committed on some type of your property and items taken. The perpetrator(s) will not be charged with robbery, just burglary and or theft.

Those young whippersnappers just had no respect at all for one of the greats of all time and someone that they actually knew. How low can you go? Sounds like something a junkie or meth person would do.

I consider them the pioneering and unmatched kings of white southern blues /rock with all the influences noted above but also including African drumming patterns.

The original line up is unmatched. It was the beginning of a long decline when Duane died. But, as in life, they rest of us go on as best we can. I really would of loved to hear what Duane would of played all these years had he lived. I bet it would of been really, really good.

The best are often times taken from us too young. Duane, Jimi and a personal favorite of mine, Clarence White.

Those two took a heck of a chance. Everybody own there has a gun in the house -- and of course they ripped a gun off.

Burglarizing a home in the south, is really taking your life into your own hands.
