McCain: GOP Must Work With Obama

I Like ItI Don’t Like It

Reverting to the role of Republican foil that made him an unpopular figure for many conservatives, John McCain argued on Friday that historical circumstances should compel his GOP colleagues to work closely with Barack Obama.

"There are not many times in history," he said, "that a president has come to office with as many challenges as the president-elect does and that's incumbent then upon all of us to try and do all we can to work with him."

Appearing on Fox News for one of the few times since losing the election, McCain offered a supportive assessments of the president-elect's agenda. He acknowledged the need to pass a stimulus, but said he would reserve judgment until he saw the final package.

"All I can say to you is that I want to see the stimulus package I want to see what it does, I want to see what kind of provision it has in it," he told Neil Cavuto. "I think the president-elect is going to marshal public opinion. Right now his approval ratings and hopes of the American people are very high," he later added.

He also called Obama's national security team "excellent," and saved special praise for CIA Director nominee Leon Panetta.

"I think that Leon Panetta is highly qualified, and in all due respect I think it is not bad from time to time to have somebody from outside of the intelligence community but with strong managerial experience as Chief of Staff of the White House, to be head of one of these agencies. I think there is some good balance there."

McCain said he talked with Obama since the election about foreign policy and domestic matters. Calling those conversations "very cordial," he added, "I want to help the president succeed."

It was the type of interview that would make hard-core partisans shake their heads. Not because McCain was overly effusive in his praise -- Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, after all, has said he expects a stimulus bill to pass with wide Republican support -- but because he didn't use the public forum to score any political points for his party.

And, sure enough, in Cavuto's next segment both he and Ann Coulter offered acid-dripped interpretations of the former Republican figurehead's message.

"I had John McCain earlier and he was sort of saying it is our duty now ... to work with the president-elect and presumably support this stimulus measure," Cavuto said. "He seemed to be saying that Republicans could look, you know, like obstructionists if they object to everything that Barack Obama does. What do you make of that?"

"I don't think the Republicans should be taking advice from John McCain," Coulter said. "I don't really know much about what is going on right now because this came out Tuesday, so I don't know the details of the stimulus plan. But I think it is pretty clear from the last election the voters want Republicans to be Republicans."

If the Ann Coulters of the world continue on their "stick to your guns no matter what" frame of mind it will be some time before being a "real Republican" will be cool again. I have heard conservative after conservative talk about not compromising...wanting to "win" and not compromise with anyone.

It just amazes me that it hasn't occurred to a lot of people that the current administration had to muck things up pretty badly for us to elect Barack Obama to be president. It would not be a bad idea for conservatives to be a bit conciliatory and hope our new president is successful. A successful president means a successful country. Who doesn't want that?

Mr. Stein,

I throughly agree with the comment/quote by Ms. Coulter(I would call her a number of things, but I want to keep this civilised.) that you put in your article: ".....voters want Republicans to be Republicans." That they should so they can hopefully continue to be losers in Presidential elections.

Support Obama if:
he wants lower taxes
he wants more energy developement (we don't want rolling brownouts)
he wants to cut the federal "pork" budget
he wants laws that apply to all citizens
he protects this country from invasion
he protects this country from terrorists
he supports the laws that are in place now or removes the ones that are not enforced
he supports all minorities, especially the unborn and the aged
he wants citizens to pursue their dreams without interferrance from the gov't
these are conservative ideals, we have not had repub leadership that supports them in decades. If the liberals will support these ideals, we will vote for them:-).

To suggest that the lies were one-sided in the recent campaign is ridiculous - "McCain wants to stay in Iraq for 100 years!", anyone?...

Anyone who assumes that on November 4th America gave a mandate to the Democrats is a fool.
Anyone who assumes the gains made in November can't or won't be erased in a heartbeat is a fool.

Obama is no fool--he understands that if we don't work together with the other side of the aisle we are all doomed.

I'm sick and tired of the ideologues and partisans on both sides who would rather take the entire country to hell in a handbasket before they'll compromise and work together for the good of us all. Those people need to step aside.

And if you just can't forgive the rancid McCain campaign: McCain lost, remember? Move on! It's politics! Like it or not, he's someone Obama and the dems need to work with, not against.

Yeah, I mean, if they had worked with him, he might have gotten his war in Iraq, the Patriot Act, and tax cuts for the top 1%. What a shame. What a shame.

If they went along, it was for political expediency because they read the opinion polls. They managed to change opinions with the constant hate towards Bush, then they pretended they never went along with him.

How many times did we hear that Bush misled the American people with WMD's, when Albright, Clinton&Clinton, Gore, and Clinton Admin all said that Iraq had them back in the late 90's. Did they all of a sudden just disappear or was that just a diversion from Monica and all of the other scandals?

You bemoan Dems demonizing Bush, when he and his cronies did the same and worse?

After 8 years of "do what I want or you're un-American, unpatriotic, and hate America" and you actually have the gall to make a comment like this?

Welcome to the GOPs years in the wilderness. Between BushCo's behavior/failure and the likes of Chip Saltsman, the Republicans are dooming themselves to the relic rooms of history.

You must still be as ignorant as you were when you voted for Shrub! First the Democrats went along with all that Shrub wanted; then he rubbed their nose in it when they wanted to make constructive changes in what he wanted; then they resisted what he wanted and he called them communists and traitors!

Notice that Obama has reached out to work with the "loyal opposition" party known as the Republicans and has not yet rejected them as Shrub rejected the Democrats.

But, I think the rejection will come from Obama just as it has come from the voters if the Republicans are not willing to compromise for the good of the country. McCain is on the right side of this. And, how can you take seriously any network who puts Coulter on a show and calls it anything but a biased diatribe. Come on!

I think it is pretty clear from the last election the voters want Republicans to be out of office, but then Ann Coulter and I are plainly from different planets. Come to think of it, I suspect Coulter is from the same one as Frank N Furter in the Rocky Horror Show.

I am optimistic and believe McCain has accepted Obama as president and is truly interested to help get the nation back on track after the Republican disaster. And why not, he wants to accomplish something and this is his opportunity, I believe he does care for his country other than Cavuto and Coulter.

Yeah, my poor pre-school English probably hardly helps grasping a notion of democratically elected US President 's need for an acceptance as a president from any of his loyal subjects.

Maybe, speaking of trustworthy cooperation is more relevant to.

Give McCain some credit for these concessionary remarks, but I'll bet he's sorry he didn't run with John Kerry in '04.

Ann Coulter: "But I think it is pretty clear from the last election the voters want Republicans to be Republicans."

...???

I'm sorry, in what way is that clear, exactly? What's clear is that voters wanted Republicans to exeunt with a flourish, pretty much across the board.

You're expecting something Coulter writes to make sense!

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:48 PM on 01/11/2009

If Ann Coulter ever made sense, she wouldn't be Anne Coulter. In fact, she would be a nobody even in every sense of the word. She's built a career of sorts on slander which the Conservatives consumed with great appetite. It is the likes of Coulter which catalyzed the inevitable downfall of the GOP. Karma seems to work in the political realm as well.

It is my fervent hope that Ann Coulter continues to write her best-selling books and that conservatives continue to read and believe them. The longer Republicans think Coulter is right the longer they will spend in the wilderness. Coulter represents everything that is wrong with the Republican party, and if we're lucky the Republican party will stay exactly as it is for many years to come.

I don't get how Coulter can continue to write books. The first one was Blame the Liberals, the second one was Blame the Liberals II, and so on.
It reminds me of what my mom used to say, "if you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem". I think we can all agree Ann isn't part of the solution...
