LOS ANGELES — Stars are sprucing themselves up, getting gifts and going to galas before Sunday's Golden Globes.

PRE-GLOBES GALA: Even celebs who may not be Golden Globes-bound will don glamorous duds this weekend. A spate of stars, including Tobey Maguire, Demi Moore, Jake Gyllenhaal and Sting, were expected Saturday at the Art of Elysium's annual charity gala.

The swanky soiree, held at a former cathedral in downtown Los Angeles, will include dinner, music, a fashion show and special honors for Eva Mendes and Jim Sheridan.

Mendes was chosen to receive the inaugural Spirit of Elysium award for her work with the organization over the past two years. Sheridan, the event's co-chair, was to be presented with the Visonary Award before passing the torch to next year's honoree, Shepard Fairey.

Founded in 1997, the Art of Elysium encourages actors, artists and musicians to share their time and talent at artistic workshops for seriously ill children. Last year's gala raised over $800,000.

GIFTS GALORE: Nothing gets stars in the mood for a big awards show like piles of swag. And despite the slumping economy, the getting was good at gift suites around town.

Stars who visited the DPA gifting lounge at Beverly Hills' Peninsula Hotel _ including Golden Globe nominees Blair Underwood and Melissa George _ could collect Jil Sander sunglasses, a six-day Tahitian getaway, fine jewelry, handbags and designer dog collars. They could also get pampered with treatments such as eyelash extensions, facials, massages and foot reflexology.

Down the street at Kari Feinstein's Style Suite in West Hollywood, guests perused three floors packed with goodies to eat, drink, wear or apply to skin and hair.

Wendi's Fine English Toffee and Nothing Bundt Cakes provided a sugar kick, and Little Black Dress wines and Glowelle antioxidant beauty drinks offered liquid refreshment while guests including Jessica Alba, Chris "Ludacris" Bridges and Golden Globe nominee Debra Messing stocked up on swag.

Messing collected tooth-whitening products, bedazzled shearling boots and a box of Glowelle drinks, which she called "Glow-tox." Alba fell in love with a woven, diamond-studded bracelet from Tacori. Michelle Trachtenberg of the hit TV teen drama "Gossip Girl" snapped up sexy underthings from Bittersweet Butterfly and Golden Globe nominee Viola Davis coveted a lavender leather handbag from Moni Moni.

Other stars ogled conflict-free, earth-friendly fine jewelry from Precious Earth, adult-size footie pajamas from Pajama City and sparkling gems from Touchstone Crystal.

Davis, who's enjoying widespread accolades for her work in "Doubt," said awards season was "dizzying" but not stressful.

"It's just been a joy," she said. "It's a joy to be recognized for your work."

GOLDEN FACELIFT: At least one glittering star will admit having a face lift: the Golden Globe statuette.

The film-swathed globe atop a marble base has been revamped this year. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association spent two years refining its trademark trophy. The new one _ featuring a more detailed, accurate globe and a new marble base _ will be handed out for the first time at Sunday's ceremony.

"There's really not much change in the design," said Jorge Camara, the association's president. "It's basically the same globe with a strip of film around it _ the one that we have had since we started."

The organization also redesigned its Cecil B. DeMille award, presented annually in recognition of outstanding contributions to the entertainment industry. This year's honoree, Steven Spielberg, will be the first recipient of the redesigned award.

The revamped statuettes also come with a new leather-bound, velvet-lined case, Camara said, adding that previous Golden Globe winners are welcome to upgrade to the new statue: "We will be very happy to replace them if they want to."

Some spoke about the the recession, but otherwise all these actors seem oblivious to what's going on. I liked Tracy Morgan. Atleast he mentioned President Obama. I wish the actors would have balls enough to talk about Israel and Iraq. But I guess no one wants to be blacklisted for next year. They all want to keep working.

My understanding with the Golden Globes is that they are chosen by roughly 20-25 people, who are not in the entertainment industry, but journalists. Unlike the Academy awards, which is close to 6,000 people in the profession the awards are given to (makes sense). The Golden Globes are BS. And everyone gets all excited about it and hypes it like a great honor. It isn't. But like so many things in our culture, people don't really look at the fine print and see what it is they are getting into and going along with.

The Academy Awards aren't much better. Just a bunch of Hollywood people giving themselves awards.

Whatever happened to the political actors who would say something when they got on the podium? I remember when Michael Moore got an award at the Oscars and he spoke out about the war, some actually booed him. I miss those types of actors. Everyone is so okay with not rocking the boat. I wish they would say something that mattered instead of thanking all these people we've never heard about.

This seems a bit much to those of us who choose between new shoes and stuff for our kids. Well, let's hope that some of the folks attending these events actually pick up stuff they can sell on eBay and hand over the money to charity.

If we are such a financial crisis, then why don't the stars save all of the money that will be spent on patting each other on the back and give all of it to Charity. And why don't every member of Congress (16% who are millionaires) give their pay raise that "they did not vote on") to charity. Like I have said before talk is cheap but action cost more.

Waste of time. Just another in so many, many, many award shows now out there. We've got the SAG Awards, Oscars, Emmys, Peoples Choice, Golden Globes, Grammys, American Music Awards, CMA, ...what am I missing? I know there's more. Do people even watch these shows anymore? Based on their dismal ratings, I think not. So why are they still on? They're cheap to produce, just like all the other garbage reality shows that the networks are filling our airwaves with. And, please, the fact that all those rich folks don't even buy their own clothes or jewelry and then get $50,000+ gift bags...another example of how rich people stay rich.

For the life of me, I can't remember watching any award show for over two decades now. Absolutely irrelevant.

except for the Oscars, Pulitzers and the Nobel's all awards shows are lame. Art is trumped by business success always. So the awards mean absolutely nothing.

if they are spending in a crumbling economy more props to them
if you have earned it you certainly have the right to spend it.

Apparently not. All the while telling US to conserve gas, consume less, and "go green."

Do what I say, not as I do. The golden rule of Hollywood. What a bunch of hypoc rites.

Brad Pitt and Angelina are both going to go to all the award shows. They need to convince us that they are just so happy. They make me laugh. It seems they try a little too hard. I hope Benicio gets nominated. What a shocker that would be: Best picture: "Che"

yes, how rude of them to be so presumptuous!
I mean, nominated for an award, and the audacity to show up.
I'm sure some would be here slamming them if they were too uppity to make an appearance.

I'm still waiting for someone to pull a Marlon Brando and reject their award because a) it means nothing, really, and b) to shine a light on some of the absurdities and injustices of the world. But I've been waiting a long time, and apparently this generation of actors are all a bunch of chicken$**ts and are unwilling to stand up to the almighty Hollywood machine. Wimps

Another stupid award show where one group of liberals give another group of liberals an "award".

I'll be watching "24".

What on God's earth would make you think that all of Hollywood is liberal? There is more of a mix than you think. There's a lot of actors out there who don't share their political views and try to keep their personal lives' private -- as it should be. These actors don't want people to have preconceived ideas about them. They want to play a part in a movie, theatre or whatever and have you believe what they are thinking, instead of thinking -- why would I want to watch that liberal or republican or libertarian or whatever.

Award shows are a sad commentary on humanity. How about a few award shows for science, medicine and accomplishments that serve mankind. Perhaps, recognizing people that actually help others.

Well, there is one I can think of called the Nobel Prizes. But maybe it would be nice to have one/some for U.S. contributers in those categories.
