BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. — Heath Ledger was honored with a Golden Globe, and Kate Winslet came away with two. But the top dog was "Slumdog Millionaire," the Bollywood fantasy that took four awards, including best drama.

With its awards Sunday, "Slumdog Millionaire" emerged as the potential film to beat at the Academy Awards, an unexpected position for a movie with a cast of unknowns and a story set among orphans and criminals on the streets of Mumbai.

"Is this really happening to me? My first film wins four Golden Globes? I just can't believe it," co-star Freida Pinto gushed to reporters backstage as she stood among her collaborators, including Danny Boyle, who won the best-director prize.

A critical darling and solid box-office success, "Slumdog Millionaire" knocked off best-drama nominees that included Brad Pitt's "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio's "Revolutionary Road" and Ron Howard's "Frost/Nixon."

"They have this expression _ which I hope I pronounce correctly _ in Hindi, which is when you do something, you should do it from the heart," Boyle said backstage. "The film was made from the heart, and we never expected to be here, and it's incredible that we are."

Best screenplay and musical score prizes also went to "Slumdog Millionaire," the story of an orphan boy who rises from terrible hardship to become a champ on India's version of "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire," all the while trying to reunite with a lost love from his childhood.

"Benjamin Button," "Frost/Nixon" and Meryl Streep's "Doubt" all tied for the lead with five nominations and all went away empty-handed.

Woody Allen's Spanish romance "Vicky Cristina Barcelona" won for best musical or comedy film.

The night belonged mainly to non-A-listers and films below the radar.

Sally Hawkins, a British actress virtually unknown in America, was chosen best actress in a comedy or musical as an eternal optimist in "Happy-Go-Lucky." Colin Farrell took the comedy or musical actor prize as a hit man in "In Bruges," a little-seen movie released last winter. Mickey Rourke returned from the wilderness to earn the Globe for best dramatic actor in "The Wrestler," a film whose comeback theme paralleled the actor's own journey back from Hollywood pariah.

"There ain't no quit in me," said Rourke, whose role as a washed-up wrestler with one last shot at glory re-established him as a viable star after he wrecked his career with bad behavior in the 1990s. "I didn't care about repercussions, and I paid the price for that. It took 13, 14 years for the doors to open up again."

"The Wrestler" also won the best-song Globe for Bruce Springsteen, who wrote the film's title tune.

Winslet, previously nominated five times without winning at both the Globes and Oscars, won for her role as a woman in a crumbling marriage in "Revolutionary Road" and as a former Nazi concentration camp guard in "The Reader."

"Revolutionary Road" was directed by Winslet's husband, Sam Mendes, and reunited her with her "Titanic" co-star Leonardo DiCaprio.

To DiCaprio, Winslet said: "I've loved you for 13 years and your performance in this film is nothing short of spectacular." To Mendes, she added: "Thank you for directing this film, babe, and thank you for killing us every single day and really enjoying us actually being in such horrific pain."

There was little surprise in the supporting-actor category. Virtually since he died nearly a year ago, Ledger has been the name on everyone's lips for that award.

Ledger won the prize for his diabolical turn as the Joker in the Batman blockbuster "The Dark Knight," raising his chances to become only the second actor to win a posthumous Oscar. The first was Peter Finch, who won the best-actor Oscar for 1976's "Network."

"Dark Knight" director Christopher Nolan accepted the Globe for Ledger, who died Jan. 22 from an accidental overdose of prescription drugs. Oscar nominations come out on the anniversary of Ledger's death.

"All of us who worked with Heath on `The Dark Knight' accept with an awful mixture of sadness but incredible pride," Nolan said. "After Heath passed, you saw a hole ripped in the future of cinema."

Among the stars Hawkins beat was Streep, who had a nomination for musical or comedy actress for "Mamma Mia!" Backstage, Hawkins said that as she walked up to accept her Globe, Streep asked, "`Are you happy now?' Yes, Meryl, I'm happy."

I enjoyed Slumdog Millionaire for it's cinematography and "feel good" plot (poor kid wins one for the ghetto) anf the acting was good. I enjoyed the Bollywood musical number at the end and felt the eerie trony of it being held in the train station where later so many would die from a terrorist attack. I thought the movie helps Americans see what India (especially Mumbai) is like today. But...the film is highly formulaic and doesn't hold a candle to "Grand Torino" which I believe will the the Best Film at the Oscars this year. Clint Eastwood has created his very best film ever, superior to Million Dollar Baby by a long shot. Slumdog will not even be close when the Oscars are held.

You cannot please everyone. SlumDog Millionaire in my opinion should atleast get two Oscars.
One for Rehman for music and one for the director. The direction is simply superb. I agree that there are other movies that are better in comparison .
As for the movie it is one of the best I have seen. It holds your attention from beginning to end.

Any awards ceremony from which Angelina and Brad both go home empty handed is a SHAM!!! Hello!!! Hollywood Foreign Press Association? Do the old alcoholics who vote even speak English? Anyone who is in a position to decide whether America's two most gifted thespians receive a coveted acting award should be required--by law!--to pass a basic English fluency test. Thanks a lot, Obama!

Kate Winslet is my new favorite actress. Her quote of the night.

"I'm so sorry Anne, Meryl, Kristin – oh God, who's the other one?"
– Kate Winslet, accepting the Globe for best actress and naming her fellow nominees Hathaway, Streep and Scott Thomas – but momentarily forgetting Angelina Jolie

Teehee.

I agree. That was a beautiful moment. I have always been a Kate Winslet fan, but now I will run out and see all of her movies! Angelina's fake smile at that moment was priceless.

I know! As if I needed any more reasons to love Kate Winslet.

I saw "Revolutionary Road" this weekend, Happy. Grim, but worth seeing. Kate, as usual, is excellent. And beautiful.

A R Rahman won the Golden Globe for his music in Slumdog Millionaire.

This is his other work. Listen to this amazing piece in the movie Jodhaa Akbar.

"Slumdog Millionaire".....brilliant movie. Yes, the beginning is brutal and tough to watch, but I had chills by the time the movie ended. If you love fresh, original movie-making, I don't see how you couldn't love this one.

I liked the real slm kids who acted in this movie..the small boy was awesome. But then he is missing in the Golden Globes. The adult actors are here. They were IMO, mediocre!

It was the kids and AR Rahman's music that made the movie watchable for me.

I couldn't be happier for Kate Winslet. She is the singularly most talented actress of her generation and no one deserves the praise and honor associated with winning these two Golden Globes. While I have yet to see "The Reader," she was absolutely brilliant in "Revolutionary Road." Leonardo DiCaprio was wonderful as well but Winselt is really in a league of her own, creating real breathing and honest characters in everything she does. "Road" was no exception and some of her best work to date, and that's saying a lot. And in her second acceptance speech especially she showed real humility, charm, and the kind of genuine thankfulness that makes award shows so great. And she is absolutely stunning! I can only hope that this double win will be repeated at the Oscars.

As for the other awards I was very happy with the other winners. "Slumdog Millionaire" was the best film of the year, edged out, in my opinion, only slightly by "Wall-E." But "Millionaire" was an absolutely beautiful film that was impeccably made and exceptionally involving and moving. The Colin Farrel surprise win was entirely welcomed, he was so entertaining in "In Bruges." And Sally Hawkins was hysterical and enchanting in "Happy-Go-Luck," wonderfully endearing performance and film. Mickey Rourke, also, won very deservedly - while Sean Penn may have been better in "Milk," Rourke gave an incredibly surprising and brutally honest performance that was equally impressive.

GG are the most over-rated award, a mid the 20 of so actor award shows, why do people take it seriously. It has the least amount of people voting and people can get paid fro their votes. Four times the number of people have made comments here than actually voted for the GG.

Pia Zadora and Duchovny awards have been the classic how much is your vote worth. Pia husband promised to get the globes on TV and Fox was the first to pay to brordcast the Globes (if DD) won.

BTW, if you want to see a better movie than Slumdog Millionaire check out AMAL directed Richie Mehta it actually won a number of festival awards.

the use of revolution road, wrestler, benji button, frost nixon as nominees in any awards show is sheer fraud. first, rev. road was a huge waste of time watching people infected with nicotine poisoning. angelina should have won for "the changeling". the one thing "rocky" didn't have was that kitten, babe, melissa tome. benji button was done with "C.G." they told you that. ridiculous waste of time. but the worst waste of time was fr-nix--- it came down to one quote-- the whole friggen movie. in bruges was grotesque violence - such a har-har-. MILK was a complete masterpiece, sean and the other guy and the rest-- love their craft. keith -did well, we needed him forever. i told you (look up my posts) slum dog millionaire the BEST movie in 5 years. the audience seemed clueless each time slum dog won the trophy. the music for slum dog is tied with dark night . good stuff.

What? Slumdog Millionaire is a British movie, so why the comparison? :/ A sweeping generalization isn't a good idea either.

That said, I agree 'Taare Zameen Par' is worth seeing. I enjoyed it a lot.

Another celebrity clusterf***k. They are all so amazed and can't believe their success at being honored in this fashion. The log rolling and mutual "respect" for each other is nauseating. Too bad no one them thought to thank the common folks for forking over hard earned $$ to see their epic works.

I thought the event was live. These actors, actresses and production people are very talented for the most part and I won't take that or their hard work away from them. The movies/TV shows they create are enjoyed by many. However, the multitude of award shows are sickening displays of gladhanding, log rolling and empty praise - very much like our political leaders getting together after an "important" vote.

I saw Slumdog and have also seen Benjamin Button, Doubt, and Milk. These last three were absolutely outstanding films in a year of superb film making. I cannot figure out why everyone is so impressed with Slumdog. Does some guy winning a game compensate for the brutality, rape, murder, sadism and generalized carnage that makes up the background of this film? I didn't like it and literally couldn't watch a good deal of it. It just kept getting worse and worse.

Remind me not to pay attention to your future opinions, then. Those other films are great as well, but just because you didn't get Slumdog doesn't mean it was bad. And he wasn't in the game to win the money, if you had paid one iota of attention you'd have known that and saved yourself the wasted time it took to post your diatribe.

Never saw the show. Re-runs of Murdoch Mysteries were so much more enticing. These awards shows just reek. I have never heard of the big winner and think it sounds more like straight to DVD.
