Conrad Black Defends Blagojevich, Calls Fitzgerald Chicago's Torquemada

Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich -- who was impeached on Friday by the Illinois House of Representatives -- has become America's anti-heroic poster boy. The fact that the only trial he's had is a drum-head media death sentence is, for these purposes, irrelevant. Blago has been labouring under prolonged investigation from Chicago's very own Torquemada, U.S. attorney Patrick Fitzgerald. The Governor's recorded comments certainly suggest he's flunked his ethical breathalyzer. Yet he didn't sell Barack Obama's vacated Senate seat or take a bribe in respect of it.

But then, innocence no longer has much to do with U.S. justice.
