Earns New York

editorandpublisher.com:

The Atlantic's recent article that speculated about the demise of The New York Times drew a harsh rebuttal from Times senior vice president of corporate communications, Catherine Mathis.

In a letter to the Atlantic, first posted on the Romenesko site, Mathis declared that the piece "leaves a lot to be desired from the standpoint of . . . well, journalism.

I would save the Sea Post Intell but not the NYT mouthpiece for the GOP.

Isn't that a good one? This doesn't look to me like a serious magazine. The NY Times however is a great newspaper, notwithstanding William wrong-about-EVERYthing Kristol and Judith Miller. Worst disgraces to journalism ever, and there are lots of people vying for that dubious honor, but bad as Katie Couric is nobody has died because of her deceit as they have because of the other two.

A lot of these newspaper problems are simply debt run up by paying too much to purchase the paper.

The bottom line:

"...And since it's profitable for us to print these copies, we will continue to do so."

Got that?

Despite everything the paper itself is turning a profit.

There's a big difference between NY Times Company and the print edition of the paper.

"The New York Times Company, a leading media company with 2007 revenues of
$3.2 billion, includes The New York Times, the International Herald Tribune, The Boston Globe, 16 other daily newspapers, WQXR-FM and more than 50 Web sites, including NYTimes.com, Boston.com and About.com."

The death of the New York Slimes is coming. Maybe if they hadn't become an RNC mouthpiece they might have maintained their readership and integrity.

The ongoing death of many of the things that true progressives have criticized for years such as The GOP, Factory Food, SUVs, the real estate speculative industry, Wall Street, the New York Times, Consumerism, TV, car culture, affirmative action and the other things....well, it sure is quietly satisfying to witness isn't it? Snicker.

What are or what would be the conditions which the NYT would be required to meet to obtain a loan which was to be paid in 2011? What would be acceptable as security for such a loan? I recall some discussion of the NYT's real estate being of greater value than the newspaper. Some speculated that the real estate of a bankrupt NYT which had ceased publication would be attractive to some investors.

In May, 2009, we will see what a NYT which still publishes will look like or what will be left if the NYT ceases publication.
The NYT's managment may be compared to a whistling 9 year old passing through a grave yard on a moonless, stormy night.
