I Like ItI Don’t Like It

Choire Sicha, who recently interviewed Anderson Cooper for the Los Angeles Times, posted on his blog an interesting tidbit: he was barred by CNN from asking any "personal questions" in the interview:

Also, now seems a good place to mention that access to Mr. Cooper through the network is dependent on their conditions that no personal questions be asked, whatever that means, and so I agree to their conditions, as stupid as they may be. UPDATE: Uh, wow, I phrased this really hastily and didn't say what I meant in the slightest.... What I meant is that CNN asks interviewers to ask no "personal questions." I really didn't mean to give the impression that I made an agreement with CNN, though that is somehow exactly what I said. Good grief. I don't make agreements before interviews, though it is often the case that people's representatives will suggest restrictions on lines of inquiry. I will however talk with subjects and their representatives about expected, general lines of inquiry for preparation.

What's interesting about this is not anything about Cooper's personal life, but rather that a journalist — America's boyfriend, no less — employs a strategy with other journalists that is more expected from a celebrity than a newsman. Even for Cooper's fans, it must be disappointing, in that it gives credence to Greta van Susteren and Keith Olbermann when they refer to him as a "marketing experiment."

Olbermann took Cooper on for this very point — refusing to answer questions about his personal life — in a 2007 New York magazine profile (pages 5 and 6):

The CNN anchor, Olbermann notes, recently told a Men's Journal writer that he wouldn't talk about his private life. "Don't tell me you don't want to talk about personal life when you wrote a book about your father's death and your brother's death," says Olbermann. "You can't move this big mass of personal stuff out for public display, then people ask questions and you say, 'Oh, no, I didn't say there was going to be any questions.' It's the same thing as the Bush administration saying, 'We're going to war, but you really aren't allowed to know why.' "

Olbermann checked his hair in the mirror just as a worried PR assistant materialized. But he wasn't done. "Don't tell me you can't talk about your personal life and then, when they send you overseas and you do a report that consists of your voice-over and pictures of you in a custom-made, blue-to-match-your-eyes bulletproof vest, looking somberly at these scenes of human devastation--like a tourist--and that's your report. Your shtick is your personal life."

And while Olbermann says Cooper's "shtick is [his] personal life," increasingly, AC360's shtick has been others' personal lives as well — the program Tuesday night, for instance, breathlessly tracked the whereabouts of Marcus Schrenker, the businessman who disappeared after faking his own death, and included a clip of Oprah discussing Kate Winslet's breasts (seen below).

If CNN wishes to take Cooper's program in this direction, that's one thing. But a news organization like CNN telling journalists that they cannot ask an anchor personal questions — an anchor whose very celebrity they've cultivated and who often delves into celebrity coverage himself — hardly seems like the commitment to journalism the network so often boasts about.

What is CNN afraid of.? Andersoon Cooper is either gay or straight and those who like him like me will always like him. I for one thinks he is gay. He just looks too good to be straight, but if he turns out straight, wonderful, and if he is gay like I suspect, that too is great. He should be happy with whatever he is, but stop hiding it as you make it seem so bad to be gay.

Anderson , you are good looking, you do a great job and your viewers love you., Period.

one thing we know for sure: Anderson Cooper isn't interested in Kate Winslett's or any other woman's breats.

As a gay man working in Hollywood for 30 years I have frequently been a target for homophobia, some of it astonishingly overt and legally actionable. Paradoxically, the devout Christians who most clearly disapprove of my lifestyle have been the most tolerant, while the armchair liberal elite have been the most bigoted and abusive.

I find it hard to fault Cooper for wanting to keep his private life private. Rosie O'Donnell and Ellen are entertainers, and he is not. His already famous family history is one thing, but a list of people he's dated is quite another.

If the ever smug Keith Oberman wants to walk a mile in Anderson's shoes he'd better be prepared to climb Mount Everest and pray for good weather.

Skeetshooter - I see you conveniently leave out Rachel Maddow. She's a serious journalist and doing very well. And while she doesn't throw her private life in anyone's face, if someone would happen to ask her if she's gay or straight, she'll give them an honest answer just as any honest straight person would. So the question is, what are Anderson Cooper and CNN so afraid of?

Actually, Anderson, more people talk about you being gay than normally would simply because you've sealed yourself inside a magic closet -- constructed by both you and CNN. Pity you didn't anticipate Rachel M's lead... or what President O is ushering in...

So the mystery remains: How did somebody with absolutely no journalism background and working for a phony news organization, manage to adopt the White House Press day-pass system as his own while sidestepping a thorough background check that might have detected his sordid past?
What did Anderson Cooper know and when did he know it? For more information see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeff_Gannon

It is so American, so "Christian", and so "high school" to worry about Mr. Cooper's sexuality. This has absolutely nothing to do with his ability to do his job and should not be discussed.

I guess I'm confused, because I thought he HAD come out some time ago. All these people asking "How do you know he's gay?"...I thought that by now it was just common knowledge. What's the big deal? Does it make him any better or any worse at his job? Nope. Some people like him, some people loathe him and some couldn't give two $hitz one way or the other. CNN, get a grip!

Never officially came out. Just openly closeted.

If CNN is sooooo concerned about a 'particular element' of his 'personal life', they should give Cooper a 'beard' ....... Hollywood still does this and it seems to be going Ok for the likes of Clooney, Cruise and Will Smith...

Nice idea, 'cept it's too late for that now. If he shows up with a woman somewhere no one will believe him. It's an open secret now.

AC360 – Keeping ‘em honest… except about that gay thing.

The news organizations created the "journalists as celebrities" monster. I suggest they live with it or put it back where it belongs.

I'm sorry, whenever I see Anderson Cooper's photo, I can only think of two words:

Blue Steel.

I've never thought of Anderson Cooper as "personal." He's more like an impersonal machine that reads the news.

Gay. Not gay. Who cares??? His sexual orientation is completely irrelevant in regards to his job.

And this is the issue it all comes down to. Unfortunately, because the majority of US citizens are homophobic/anti-gay, his career cannot affort a declaration of sexual orientation. It would ruin his career as a serious journalist with the most prominent TV news organization in the country. Sorry fuzzyhearts and others who aren't homophobic, our society's attitudes would ruin him and hurt CNN, if he were to come out in an interview. It is therefore prudent that his superiors at the network would place conditions on questions asked.

1. How would you know if he's gay?

2. Look at Rachel Maddow! She's a lesbian, but she doesn't throw that in your face. People don't care about your sexuality as long as you're a good journalist. She's a great journalist, so it keeps people watching. Anderson on the other hand, not so much. But his sexuality still doesn't matter. People wouldn't trip out as bad as you're playing it out.

Clearly his orientation is irrelevant - but the more open gay people are about their orientation, the more positive role models gay youth will have, which is hugely important to their mental health and our nations mental health.
