I Like ItI Don’t Like It

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has launched a marketing campaign to rebrand fish as "sea kittens," a name the organization hopes will increase awareness and make the vertebrates more endearing to those who would eat them.

"A lot of people don't realize that fish are capable of feeling fear and pain, that they develop relationships with each other, and even show affection by gently rubbing against one another," says Ashley Byrne, PETA's sea kitten campaign co-ordinator. "Knowing that the fish sticks in the school cafeteria are really made out of tortured sea kittens makes most kids want to lose their lunch."

As a humourous entry on the sea kitten website states, "fish need to fire their PR guy-stat. Whoever was in charge of creating a positive image for fish needs to go right back to working on the Britney Spears account and leave our scaly little friends alone."

The only thing they've accomplished here is to make me nickname my cats "fuzzy sharks."

I can understand their line of thinking. Fish and humans are as distantly related as you can get from vertebrate animals. Fish suffering doesn't bring out the emotional trauma humans would get from witnessing a fellow mammal's suffering. To try to attach a mammalian (and infantile) nickname to fish indicates they understand that their job is to police the suffering of all living animals, and not be selective to only those that are more related to us. I still think that suffering of vegetables and fungi should still be classified as suffering of a living organism. But that's only me I guess.

You see liberals, don't you see how irrational it really is to support liberalism? It's reading things like this that make me realize I can never be a liberal. I mean really, what are liberals so afraid of? Always sugar coating the living hell out of everything. I mean "sea kittens" ??

Dear BMAC77,

While I am not a Liberal (with a capital L), I have known a few, and I am certain many of them would agree, this is just stupid. You overgeneralize, in any case, when you assume all people of whatever political persuasion agree on all points. This has never been the case, and you become guilty of unfair bias when you assert that because someone is {Liberal,Conservative, whatever} it must follow that they hold all the beliefs, or sympathize with all the causes associated with that grouping.

As for PETA, really? Sea kittens? C'mon!!

PETA is not a liberal organization.

Peta is the lunatic fringe. It does not speak for most liberals so your analysis is bogus.

Huh? I would classify myself as a liberal, and I can't stand PETA.

Will PETA also make these "sea kittens" not taste good? If not, I think this campaign may be doomed to failure...

I don't relish the idea of cruelty to animals, but I have no intention of becoming a vegan, either. PETA's retarded shenanigans make the idea of ethical treatment of animals seem trivial and stupid. They should campaign for all farm animals to be free-range, so they can know some happiness before we eat them.
