I Like ItI Don’t Like It

Eco-clothing is a tough one. Do you put the emphasis on materials? Distance that the materials travel? Do you go vegan?

Or do you just shave your cat, make some yarn, turn it into a sweater and call it a day?

Oh, you haven't heard of making sweaters from your pets' fur? Let us enlighten you.

This is a clip featuring Danielle German (whose creations are full of purr-zazz).

Hey, maybe I'm being too square here. Or maybe I have friends with cat allergies.

There's definitely a demand for using pet hair to create yarn. In most cases it has to be blended with a bit of wool. Many people do this in order to have something to memorialize their pet after it's gone and there's nothing weird about it, as others have pointed out. We already use animal fur of every type available to spin into yarn. I know a spinner in my own area who does this: http://www.spinningstrawintogold.com

At least you won't be able to tell when this sweater gets covered with cat hair.

For some strange reason, I think this is very very cool. I can't wait until it hits the market.

This is awesome!! Recently at the Opera at the Met, I saw TONS of women with fur handbags, except their purses are the result of skinning animals alive.

If that is okay, why wouldn't this be!?

you can definitely find a better way to make "green clothing". organic cotton t-shirts made from environmentally respectable materials are a better way to go. check them out at http://alottosay.com

the company just released its first ad too:

I am a BBIIGG cat fan and I see no harm in this as long as it doesn't hurt them. I think it is great.

I can't understand anyone who finds this "yukky". They must never have had a wool anything or cashmere sweater. I do find it weird to get a long haired cat only to shave its hair, I thought the whole point was the hair. This is from someone who has Newfoundland dogs and understands long hair, shedding and mats. It takes commitment, tine, brushing and much vacuuming of the house as well as certain people not coming by anymore (the drool may attribute to this). But, I have bags and bags of spring undercoat which I hope to one day find someone to make into yarn. What is made out of this, eventually I don't know but I really doubt if it is a purse that I couldn't get it out of the way of anyone allergic to dogs.

Why not? We shave goats, sheep and rabbits, why not cats?

This is a great use of a renewable resource that's just hanging around. You can find lots of other great entrepreneurs that are making awesome products from sustainable resources or our discards (like t-shirts from old cassette tapes??) at

www.ecobly.com.

ecobly.com is a directory of companies that make products in the USA from local, sustainable materials.

Angora rabbits are plucked actually. Very carefully, because if you hurt them it gets a bit Monty Pythonish.

As presented, it is a freaky concept. But how is using hair collected as a byproduct from cat grooming to make wool different from using the hair clippings of sheep and goats or the tufts of hair plucked to make cashmere wool? I once saw a handbag made from woven horse hair - it was softer than silk or any other fabric or fur I have ever felt. While I wouldn't want to know the cat the wool came from, I find wool made from cat hair no more repulsive than any other wool and much more humane than fur.
