"30 Rock" And "The Office" Get Renewed

UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. — NBC is renewing Tina Fey's "30 Rock" for the 2009-10 season, along with "The Office" and "The Biggest Loser."

Besides the return of the comedies and the weight-loss reality show, NBC announced Thursday that it has set a premiere date for Amy Poehler's new comedy, a mockumentary about local government. The show, yet to get a title, will debut 8:30 p.m. EST April 9.

"Southland," a new police drama from "ER" executive producer John Wells, also will debut April 9, at 10 p.m. EST.

NBC said that fans of "ER" will get three more episodes than previously announced before the show ends for good, a total of 23. That will push its two-hour finale to April 2.

Angela Bromstad, new president of prime-time entertainment for NBC, weighed in on the fate of other series at a meeting of the Television Critics Association.

Despite a drop in ratings, "Heroes" is secure, Bromstad said. The sci-fi drama, in its third season, "may have taken on too much in terms of characters and multiple story lines," she added.

Bromstad said the network feels "very strongly" about "Life," "Friday Night Lights" and "Lipstick Jungle." She denied reports that "Lipstick Jungle," which stars Brooke Shields, has been canceled.

The network executive's enthusiasm doesn't extend to the new sitcom "Kath & Kim" and "Knight Rider." The two shows were "fair tries" but aren't holding up in the ratings, she said. She called them "indicative of shows that may or may not be coming back."

Bromstad, who was named to her position in December, also oversees production at NBC and Universal Media Studios.

The network finished last season in fourth place and continues to struggle with its scripted programs. None of NBC's four new fall series clicked with viewers, including the already canceled drama "My Own Worst Enemy."

This proves what I've been saying for years: that America has a seemingly bottomless appetite for mindless drivel. The diefication of Tina Fey continues unabated. 'Mean Girls' was a total rip-off of 'Heathers' and 'Baby Moma' was so inane that some viewers were rendered catatonic. Now she is being lauded for a show that is, essentially, unwatchable. Soon people will be mentioning her in the same breath as Chaplin, Keaton and the Marx Brothers. It's sad that snarky, condescending sarcasm is what passes for comedy. The cultural ethos of this country completely bereft of good humor and intelligence that it is now nearly as bankrupt as the financial institutions. The funniest person on television is Lou Dobbs and he's trying to be serious.

Great news!

Here's hoping they hit the magic 100th episode so this wonderful show can live in syndication, bringing constant blood-vessel-popping consternation to phony conservatives and their small-minded brethren on a daily basis!

Great news. But please, people, Friday Night Lights. It isn't just about Texas idiots and their football. Well, it is, but it is kind of from a New Yorker's perspective. PLEASE WATCH!!!

Tina Fey is horrifically unfunny. Good news about The Office, though.

I find it funny that people come on here and try to pretend that their opinion about 30 Rock has nothing to do with their politics by mentioning something else they like that they think will give the impression of being an impartial viewer.

Having said that --I couldn't disagree more about 30 Rock. It's worth repeat viewings to catch all the little things that are muttered under Alec Baldwin's breath.

My low opinion of Tina Fey has and of 30 Rock has everything to do with aesthetics, not politics. I'm well to the left of Fey, thank you very much. But believe whatever makes you feel better, dear presumptuous one.

Oh, goody goody gumdrops. This year I think I'll send my ideas to the show.
09:13 PM on 01/16/2009
Of course you will. Just slip them under the door and they'll have a look at them when they get a chance.

Both shows are absolutely brilliant -- and I am especially glad that 30 Rock is gaining viewers. I was afraid it would go the way of Arrested Development for a while there.

Oh I miss A. Dev. so much!! How can such a good show not get viewers and a dumb show like American idol can get 30 mill. people each night?? But, so glad that 30 rock is gaining viewers, I absolutely love the comedy.
06:42 PM on 01/16/2009
I miss Arrested Development so much!! Hope 30 rock doesn't go down that line anytime soon.

Deal with that Cate Blanchett!

CB seems to be managing fine in a Sydney Theatre production of The War of the Roses. No time to deal with much of anything except to clean off all the blood before a final bow.

Wonderful. I have no time to watch TV anymore and no interest, either. It's all I can do to figure out how to survive and to combat my depression. So, wonderful, Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin are having a grand time being rich and famous.

Those are the two best written, best acted comedy shows on tv. Laughter is a terrific way to combat depression.

On the bright side, whining about another person's success took your focus off yourself for a minute or two.

Congrats to 30 ROCK....best show on TV!

LIFE is excellent, too. Hope it sticks around.

I have stopped watching 30 Rock. This weeks episode was a real disappointment and pretty dumb. Two of the characters sheer stupidity wears thin after awhile. So no more 30 Rock for me and I've never been a fan of the style of The Office.

Arrested Development was pure brilliance and I loved the format of that show.

The Office - makes me proud to have once lived in Scranton! Way to go 'da valley"!!!
