Becoming The Change: Your Plans For MLK Day

Yesterday, we asked you to share where you plan to volunteer on Martin Luther King Day. Today, we woke up to hundreds of responses.

Many of you will be at local shelters and food banks, donating blood and giving away old clothes.

Due to the economic crisis, Paul Solyn, from West Elma New York, will be attending a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance training because "economic inequality still exists, and this program is an opportunity to help people who don't yet have understanding of personal finances."

In Gold Bar, Washington, Kelly Clifton is coordinating a local food drive. She writes, "I have 15 confirmed volunteers to man the booth in our town's grocery store. Our area has been hit very hard with near record snow falls, and flooding has created a higher than usual demand on our food bank. Martin Luther King Jr has always inspired me with his selfless service. Barack Obama reminds me that, together, we can overcome any obstacle. I also have 3 children that I want to expose to service opportunities. I hope by doing things such as this, service will become second nature for them."

Marta Szabo, in Woodstock, NY, says, "I'm hoping to visit a housebound veteran on this day. There is a program in my neighborhood that will match you up with someone. I am excited. I never would have done this w/o Obama's suggestion."
