I Like ItI Don’t Like It

There's been constant speculation since November 4th about what would happen to President-elect Barack Obama's giant grassroots campaign network. Now Obama has an answer: a new group called Organizing for America that will redirect campaign volunteers to push for legislation. Watch:

The full press release:

In a video announcement sent to supporters today, President-elect Obama announced the formation of Organizing for America. This is the next phase for the organization that was built during the campaign, offering volunteers the continued opportunity to work for change in their communities by organizing in support of reform in Washington.

"As President, I will need the help of all Americans to meet the challenges that lie ahead. That's why I'm asking people like you who fought for change during the campaign to continue fighting for change in your communities. Since the election hundreds of thousands of you have shared your ideas about how this movement should move forward, and we've listened carefully," said President-elect Obama in the video announcement.

He continued: "Volunteers, grass roots leaders and ordinary citizens will continue to drive our organization, helping us bring about the changes we proposed during the campaign: a solution to our economic crisis, an end to the war in Iraq, affordable healthcare for all and new sources of energy to power our economy and protect our environment."

This announcement follows a dialogue with Obama for America supporters across the country. More than 500,000 completed surveys following the election making clear their vision for the organization, and more than 4,200 hosted house parties in their communities. A clear majority believe that organizing in support of President-elect Obama's agenda should be the most important goal for the organization.

Organizing for America will partner with Governor Kaine and the DNC.

"Change doesn't come easy -- our work has just begun," said Governor Kaine. "President-elect Obama has laid the foundation to meet the great challenges facing our nation, but we can succeed only if we build grassroots support for the administration's agenda. As the DNC works to elect candidates who will support the change agenda, we will also invest in bottom-up efforts that ensure that the priorities of everyday Americans are heard in Washington."

When I'm sworn in as the President of the United States, it will be because of you. You've built the largest grass roots movement in history, and shaped the future of this country. And the movement you've built is too important to stop growing now. Today I'm pleased to announce the creation of Organizing for America--the organization that will build on the movement you started during the campaign.

As President, I will need the help of all Americans to meet the challenges that lie ahead. That's why I'm asking people like you who fought for change during the campaign to continue fighting for change in your communities. Since the election hundreds of thousands of you have shared your ideas about how this movement should move forward, and we've listened carefully.

Volunteers, grass roots leaders and ordinary citizens will continue to drive our organization, helping us bring about the changes we proposed during the campaign: a solution to our economic crisis, an end to the war in Iraq, affordable healthcare for all and new sources of energy to power our economy and protect our environment.

Joe Biden and I will be working with Congress to bring about change in Washington. But we cannot do this without you. The change we've worked so hard for will not happen unless ordinary Americans get involved, and supporters like you must lead the way.

You'll be receiving more information in the next few days about this organization and how you can continue to play a crucial role in our journey to change America. I look forward to continuing that journey with you, and I thank you for everything you've done for this movement and for our country.

Interesting. I like how they're doing this and it's important.

We have to keep after our own Representatives. It matters that we stay informed about what President Obama is doing and the kind of support he needs.

For those of us, like me, who have Republican pinhead as a Congressional Rep, these clowns should understand a very clear and simple message - oppose this president and lose your seat. There's no need to dress it up.

Megalomania, greed for power, an excessive enjoyment in having power over other people and a craving for more of it. This guy in combination with his cult is very dangerous.

Ahh someone voted for the old man and lost :(

I suggest a candle light bath, a nice emo cd and some pictures of Anne Coulter.

We survived 8 years of death and destruction, you will survive a few of responsibility and proper english.

Americans did vote in the man who used change as his mantra. That man was Obama. There seems to be a market for change in the USA.

Local grassroot supporters had a legislation training in my local small community at a coffee house. Regretably I missed it. I do believe these grassroot organizers fully intend on keeping all involved that desire to be. More than even, now Congress will be need to listen so they dont fall into the normal politics and status quo. Their is much to change!

Thanks for the link.

Its important to get people engaged. Change isnt something you just vote for one day. It requires effort. Congress needs to hear from their constituents and citizens need to share ideas.

"Community organizer-in-chief" I prefer that title before "Warmonger-in-chief", as could have been the title of his predecessor.

As to those of you making fun of him using his experience as a community organizer in his new position: Would you rather have a President that's trying to unite communities and have them working for common good, or one that's splitting communities and work just for the richer 10 % of them?

He will definitely need to take it to the people to succeed.

Otherwise the special interests that rule Congress will derail the agenda!

It worries me to see how the GOP has brainwashed people into believing that community organizing is something to be ridiculed. Organizing is your American right. You have the right to get off your behind and force the pols you voted for to actually do their jobs or fire them. The GOP would rather tout The Constitution and the Bill of Rights as something that looks pretty in a glass case, not to actually be used. You have the right to assemble peacefully against the government. Its what being American means, for chrissake!

Three cheers for Barack Obama, the most kick a$$ community organizer that ever lived. Good to see "one of my own" make it big. :D

I have to laugh at people who still try to denigrate community organizing. The Obama campaign has been community organizing at its best. I expect now to see him call on this vast grass roots organization when he needs it to support legislation. The first time Congress experiences organization at this level, I believe they will finally understand the real power of community organizing, and then everyone will try to get into the science of it all.
The thing is, it has to be done well, or it won't work.
Obama does it extremely well.

Obama prepares to do what little Obama knows how to do best using his experience in the job well above his pay grade as a community organizer.

Ronmar.....Your blithering statement makes little or know sense at all. Are you speaking Palinese? I read some of your previous posts and you are still stuck on the birth certificate non issue. Sit back ,criticize , but please stay out of the way as the real Americans band together and fix your Repug disaster. Your type is living proof that Darwin was right.

Lezzsee, in the category of people "in the job well above his pay grade," who leaps to mind?

Yeah, the guy with the failed philosophy that caused the house of (credit) cards to collapse: GWBush, the last of the capitalist kings.

Your assessment that O is in over his head assumes he's been in office even for a day so that you can pass judgement. Well, of course, he hasn't yet taken the oath, so you are pre-judging him, aren't you?

That means, by definition, that you're prejudiced. Get it?

He's SO RIGHT about his not being able to do it alone. I get worried sometimes that Americans think that he's going to hit the oval office and pull miracle after miracle out of his ear. WE all need to get involved and help rebuild (literally and figuratively) our country.

BHO is smart enough to know that congress doesnt always respond to the interests of the people with millions of dollars of lobby money. So why not empower the public to lobby congress just like big business does. Watch....this will work. Stay tuned.
