Sunday's big Lincoln Memorial show was billed as the "We Are One" concert, intended to celebrate the inauguration of Barack Obama with a spirit of unity. But for those of us watching at home, one participant was excluded -- Gene Robinson, the "first openly gay, non-celibate priest to be ordained a bishop in a major Christian denomination." Robinson was on hand to deliver an opening prayer to the event, but this prayer went unseen by anyone watching on HBO, who provided and sponsored the coverage.

Reached for comment, a spokesperson for HBO stated that decisions regarding the timing and presentation of Robinson's remarks were made by the Presidential Inaugural Committee, and that Robinson was "not a part of our show from the start." Indeed, Robinson appeared minutes before the 2:30pm start time of the concert coverage. HBO's response to the matter has been uniform. A spokeperson offered AfterElton.com much the same response: "The producer of the concert has said that the Presidential Inaugural Committee made the decision to keep the invocation as part of the pre-show."

HBO comes to this controversy without any sort of significant reputation for being a network or a workplace hostile to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. In fact, the network is responsible for airing the drama Six Feet Under, which depicted gays in complex relationships unflinchingly. The Obama camp, on the other hand, has courted controversy already with the decision to include in the inauguration Saddleback Church Pastor Rick Warren, a supporter of Proposition 8 in California. The appearance of a snub in the case of Bishop Robinson has successfully raised the temperature among Democratic activists and in the liberal blogosphere, where outrage is being pointed mostly at the incoming administration and the Presidential Inaugural Committee.

Calls for comment from the PIC have not been returned. Bishop Robinson is slated to be a guest on National Public Radio's "Talk of the Nation" today at 2pm.

UPDATE:
The PIC has responded to an inquiry from John Aravosis at AmericaBlog:

"We had always intended and planned for Rt. Rev. Robinson's invocation to be included in the televised portion of yesterday's program. We regret the error in executing this plan - but are gratified that hundreds of thousands of people who gathered on the mall heard his eloquent prayer for our nation that was a fitting start to our event." -- PIC communications director Josh Earnest

[TEXT OF PRAYER]

Welcome to Washington! The fun is about to begin, but first, please join me in pausing for a moment, to ask God's blessing upon our nation and our next president.

"O God of our many understandings, we pray that you will bless us with tears - tears for a world in which over a billion people exist on less than a dollar a day, where young women in many lands are beaten and raped for wanting an education, and thousands die daily from malnutrition, malaria, and AIDS.

Bless this nation with anger - anger at discrimination, at home and abroad, against refugees and immigrants, women, people of color, gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people.

Bless us with discomfort at the easy, simplistic answers we've preferred to hear from our politicians, instead of the truth about ourselves and our world, which we need to face if we are going to rise to the challenges of the future.

Bless us with patience and the knowledge that none of what ails us will be fixed anytime soon, and the understanding that our new president is a human being, not a messiah.

Bless us with humility, open to understanding that our own needs as a nation must always be balanced with those of the world.

Bless us with freedom from mere tolerance, replacing it with a genuine respect and warm embrace of our differences.

Bless us with compassion and generosity, remembering that every religion's God judges us by the way we care for the most vulnerable.

And God, we give you thanks for your child, Barack, as he assumes the office of President of the United States.

Give him wisdom beyond his years, inspire him with President Lincoln's reconciling leadership style, President Kennedy's ability to enlist our best efforts, and Dr. King's dream of a nation for all people.
Give him a quiet heart, for our ship of state needs a steady, calm captain.

Give him stirring words; We will need to be inspired and motivated to make the personal and common sacrifices necessary to facing the challenges ahead.

Make him color-blind, reminding him of his own words that under his leadership, there will be neither red nor blue states, but the United States.

Help him remember his own oppression as a minority, drawing on that experience of discrimination, that he might seek to change the lives of those who are still its victims.

Give him strength to find family time and privacy, and help him remember that even though he is president, a father only gets one shot at his daughters' childhoods.

And please, God, keep him safe. We know we ask too much of our presidents, and we're asking far too much of this one. We implore you, O good and great God, to keep him safe. Hold him in the palm of your hand, that he might do the work we have called him to do, that he might find joy in this impossible calling, and that in the end, he might lead us as a nation to a place of integrity, prosperity, and peace. Amen."

The hypocrits in the Democratic party think its just fine to ignore the fact that Obama and his handlers are bigots. His entire marketing campaign looks like it was orchestrated by students of Leni Riefenstahl.

America and the White House have not changed. Those of you who believe it are in for a surprise.

Thankfully, common decency won out and this travesty was not permitted to be televised to insult Christians all throughout the world.

Brilliant move Obama and HBO!

Why exclude this gay bishop? I am not surprised by all the bigotry out there.

I am a straight married woman who thinks it about time the powers that be include the gay population in all areas of American life.

Gay people are taxpayers, voters, they can be your sisters, your brothers, your son, your daughter,
your next door neighbor, a coworker at work, a nurse, a doctor, a teacher and the list goes on.

Excluding the bishop was a pre meditated snub at best! This is 2009, not the 1950s.

Where is the equality in that - none I say!

Does G-d hear the prayers of unrepented homosexuals in action? I wonder.

It's good that you're wondering. Shows that you might still be thinking (though it seems like this won't be for long).

Didn't Obama select him for this event? His prayer was so beautiful and timely.

Prayers from a Homosexual - Not Celibate - Fake Priest are blasphemy. That's why Obama made the correct decision.

From what I see from every homosexual is that they are ANTI-Christian. So what is their infatuation with this guy.

When this PRIEST is in the middle of his homosexual act, do you really think God is blessing this. God help you if you do.

May God have mercy on this guy's soul.

1. a. Fake Christians are blasphemy. b. It wasn't Obama's decision.

2. a. Anything contrary to Christ (love) is ANTI-Christian. b. I hope God is as infatuated with you as she is with Bishop Robinson. Seriously, I do because I wish everyone only the love of God in Christ.

3. Yes, I do really think God is blessing "this." God help you for not including everyone in blessing and love and for not acting as Christ Himself commanded.

4. May God have mercy on your soul.

Hmmm, what's this about?

Robinson's prayer was a psychological call to arms that wasn't "celebratory" yet it was nonetheless, current and relevant. HBO is a sanitized, whitewashed version of the American culture. I'm sure it was deliberate. If they din't have a monoploy on certain important venues, I'd deep six 'em . . .

It was not HBO that left Rev. Robinson out -- it was Obama. Obama arrived only after Robinson spoke. If Obama had been there and listened to the invocation, HBO would have started their coverage. Where is the "fierce urgency of now" from Obama on gay issues? Is this like voting "present?" This is not about HBO. They started coverage when Obama arrived. Obama is the one who chose to be absent for the invocation. Ironic since he is so religious.

The prayer was beautiful, eloquent, original, and in keeping with God's word. Thank God for the New Covenant in Christ that does not condone discrimination and condemnation no matter whether you believe someone is sinning or not. God heard it and I for one will be adding my voice to this prayer and looking foward to watching God work it out.

As a heterosexual Caucasian 69 year old woman I am sad and apalled that this truly beautiful prayer was left out. Even worse we had to listen to that gas bag of wind, Rick Warren, who got very little applause or support.

I am a proud Wiccan, who formerly for years was alternately atheist, Episcopalian, atheist, Catholic and back to atheist and agnostic. I don't see the need for any prayers whatsoever in a public event at all. No one is stopping anyone from praying. I just don't see the need for public exhibitions of it.

I have many family members and friends who are gay and lesbian. I have seen the pain they suffer from being set to one side. Our country has had enough damage done in the name of religion.

Can we finally focus on the very real needs to our country and government. I alway think of the saying, "I'd rather see a sermon than hear one". More walking the walk and less talking, please.

This is our chance. I hope we don't blow it.

I bawled like a baby watching the crowd crying at the inauguration speech. I am old enough to remember Jim Crow and its awful legacy.

Peace and light,

The words of Gene Robinson were inspiring and heartfelt and should have been included by HBO regardless of "timing". They were in stark contrast to what I consider the smarmy "God rules all" words of Rick Warren. The highlight in religious thought were the words of President Obama when he referenced those not in thrall to religion. The finally and the most powerful were the words of the Reverend Joseph Lowery that brought the day together.

I hope that soon, the USA which is the country founded on the expression of freedom and human rights will actually live up to these ideas. Electing Obama is one step further towards achieving that goal. Still I see too many useful energy wasted in battles as for instance gay rights. I guess all citizens of the United States will see one day, once these rights have been granted and society hasn't collapsed, that they can concentrate their useful energies on more important issues like poverty eradication and taking care of our environment so that we all can purse happiness...

For me there is too much religion associated with the Inaugural. If we must have a public prayer I would much rather see one delivered together by representatives of many religions. Perhaps we could have one reading by a minister, a rabbi, a priest, a muslim etc. etc , where each participates, at the beginning of the inauguration and make that it. I am not sure if we need a gay minister since it shouldn't make any difference - gay- straight, as far as a religious leader but if the gay/lesbian community wants one- he/she should obviously be included as well. Hopefully when gays/lesbians have equal rights this distinction will not be necessary. I, for one, am getting really tired of all of the bigotry, misunderstanding and hatred directed at the Gay community. Gay/ lesbian people have the same rights to live, work, marry etc. as everyone else and anyone who thinks that they have a right to dictate how anyone else lives should examine their own lives and seek therapy. Enough already.

Wow, what a fun group of comments to read.

As a young American, I find this whole thing Blown out of proportion. For one the gay community doesn't seem to understand politics too much if they get that upset about this. I for one was excited that he was at least brought to the inauguration and that the band and choir was able to preform. At least we were invited! but you know, that's going to get over looked.

Gay rights, are an important civil issue, but there are many other important things to be taken care of too. I worry about my job, my health care and plenty of other mainstream ideas. And I can see why other people wonder what all the fuss is about sometimes.

Maybe I'm lucky as I don't have a partner and don't have to worry about the marriage issue. I voted no on prop 8 here in my own state. But I didn't see the point of holding a sign in Silver Lake or West Hollywood.

The truth is, that not only this country but the gay community needs to change. I've seen no activism just scared finger pointing. I hate to say it, but grow some balls. Do something that helps. Sitting behind a desk yelling about how hard it is to come out on a blog isn't going to get your point across. At least we protested for 3 weeks right? I mean surely everyones going to remember that...

Oh, the gay community, as well as the civil rights activists, understand politics very well.

I don't think you understand civil rights.

If one American's rights can be taken away, all Americans rights can be taken away. And if your rights can be taken away, they are not "rights"--they are privileges that your ruling class decides whether or not you can have.

We also understand a politician throwing one group of Americans under the bus in order to appease a bigo t t ed group of Americans. Obama apparently is no better than Bush Jr when it comes to that.

But we also realize that Obama will be up for reelection in 2012 and there is another Democratic Party politcian who won't throw women and GLBTs under the bus to kiss up to the religious right. I think I won't be the only one not voting for Obama in 2012.

The events of the past 24 hours just go to prove it. The fake argument put forward by the closet homos and closet homophobes alike on this thread over many days now to the tune that we "must allow Obama to reach out to the ree-ligus right" is just a pretext for their homophobia and to bash out gay people online. The proof? Senator John Cornyn of Texas has in SPITE of that invocation continued to block Hillary Clinton's nomination as SOS and also now blocked Eric Holder's nomination as AG. So, where is the great influence that this invocation and the appearance of this bigot on that podium yesterday had any tangible or meaningful effect?

If anyone in the PIC ever even made an argument such as has been made on this thread, to the effect that the O. must "reach out" to the far right in such a way, they're already proving themselves bigger fools than the crew that just left DC. Said crew have left people like Cornyn in place and they are NOT finished with their agenda, not by a long shot. I will give the PIC a pass as being naive and ignorant in the hard world of politics, but the homophobes of both conservative AND "liberal" self-styling really don't fool the rest of us in the GLBT community at large, and the closet types around here certainly don't.
