DETROIT — The calls began to flood Luke Song's hat shop not long after Aretha Franklin finished belting out "My Country, 'Tis of Thee" at President Barack Obama's inauguration.

Franklin, who wore a gray felt custom-designed hat from Mr. Song Millinery, has inadvertently caused an economic boom for the South Korean immigrant's store.

Song said he wasn't prepared for the hundreds of calls requesting the hat with a Swarovski rhinestone-bordered bow.

"We even have a lot of men calling to get it for their wives, mothers and grandmothers," Song said.

The hat worn by the "Queen of Soul" was hand-molded and would cost upward of $500 _ if it were for sale, the 36-year-old designer said. Customers instead were offered a satin ribbon version for $179.

"They want the same hat, but they understand it's for the 'Queen' only," he said. "Ninety-nine percent said, 'That's fine. I'll get the next best thing.'"

The family millinery has been in Detroit for about 25 years, and Franklin has been a customer for about 20 of those years. The store also sells to about 500 boutiques across the country.

"We always make hats for her for high-profile events, so for us, the inauguration really was no big deal," Song told The Associated Press on Thursday.

The design for Franklin's hat came from two different hats at the store.

"She walked through the shop and said 'I want that bow (put) on that hat,'" he said. "She had the coat already, but she needed the hat to set it off."

Big hats do make a statement. I have no doubt that big hats became a tradition among black church women because Sunday was historically the only day in the week that they had a chance to dress up after working as a domestic in someone's kitchen all week. They also symbolize expressions of creavitity and status. The hats worn by black women are among my earliest childhood memories. Big hats are also practical. Can you imagine a western without big hats? Big hats provide warmth when its cold and shade when the sun is hot. For those of you who have a problem with fussy young children on a plane, wear a big hat the next time you travel. The last time I flew I was wearing a wide-brimmed Aussie bush hat. A noisy pair of toddler twins seated near me quieted down, and stared at my hat until they fell asleep. Personally, berets are my favorite hat choice, especially in winter, and I make them. I'm not asking anyone to "like" big hats. I'm just asking that they show a little understanding and respect.

I find it hard to believe that hat was liked; heck, you know what they say, "to each his own'.

That thing is hideous.

They should make it a law that anyone who orders that monstrosity will be sent to remedial fashion school and must undergo a manditory wardrobe inspection by Tim Gunn. No exceptions.

Aretha's hat is tame compared to some of the hats worn to the horseracing events at Ascot in England. Google it youself and see how much delight some women find in wearing unusual hats. It has become a tradition there.

Yes, but that's Ascot, not the Inauguration of the POTUS!

Really, that hat was as bad as her singing...oy.

I'm not going to get racial-but it's a darn ugly hat that only gets people laughing at those who wear it. I thought is was a very poor choice and was a joke to a person who is a wonderful singer. It's the closest thing to a male repellent that has probably been made

You are no connoisseur of hats. Aretha's hat is magnificent, larger than life and understated, both rakish and well-balanced. It is a mighty dreadnought of a winter flower. A fine, big hat for a fine big person who is possibly the iconic big voiced singer of the past sixty years, those Italian boys notwithstanding.

Folks like you are so parochial. Bet you think snails are yucky, too! LOL

Some people think hats are utilitarian while others make statements with them. Aretha's hats are never mere fashion statements though; they bespeak confidence and send a I-don't-give-a-$hit-what-you-think message to the would-critic.

But why do you have to preface your statement with "I'm not going to get racial..."?

Of what race is the hat?

Yikes, surely that is a "Sunday Go to Meeting" hat if ever I saw one.

A lot of people who don't know about dressing and hats made fun of the Queen of Soul's hat
but it was a beautiful hat and could only be worn by her for Ellen D. and Jay Leno please take
notes that the hat is a black thing and you would never understand that in a million years.

If you are ever in Washington, DC on a Sunday and attend one of our church services then you will
understand about the hat. Better yet ask a black woman who is active in church what
significance does the hat have.

I see ladies coming from church at the I go to bakery all the time. They are all very well dressed and have the most marvelous hats and shoes to go with their attire! I'm not of that culture, but I admire their style and think that Aretha's hat was great! I think it was her way of showing "respect" for the grandness of the day. I wish I looked good in hats and had somewhere to wear one. :)
