ACLU Lays Off A Tenth Of Workforce

The American Civil Liberties Union, impacted by the unfolding economic crisis, laid off ten percent of its national workforce this week. Thirty-six staffers lost their jobs, including five in the Washington, D.C. legislative office, a source familiar with the firings told the Huffington Post.

A source in the ACLU's Washington office confirmed that there had been layoffs, but couldn't confirm the details. The ACLU has two separate Washington offices: a local branch that works on District of Columbia issues and an arm of the national ACLU, which works on legislative issues. The layoffs impacted the legislative office -- though the District office is not necessarily immune to a budget shortfall.

The loss of the staffers means a likely reduction in influence for the civil liberties organization just as Democrats begin to push a legislative agenda as ambitious as any since the mid-sixties. Liberal advocacy organizations have been hit hard across the board by the economic downturn, as donations have fallen off and returns from investments have gone negative.

UDPATE: Anthony D. Romero, executive director of the ACLU, issued a statement to the Huffington Post explaining the layoffs. Two foundations that had heavily backed the ACLU were wiped out by fraudulent hedge-fund manager Bernard Madoff.

"Like many organizations today, the ACLU is feeling the impact of the tough economic climate which has resulted in a decline of our assets and reduced the donations and grants that we rely upon to fund our activities, including those from two foundations that were wiped out by the Bernard Madoff scandal. We take very seriously our commitment to our donors and members who count on us to defend the constitutional rights of all Americans, even in difficult financial times. To safeguard the fiscal health of the ACLU and ensure that the vital work of defending civil liberties continues, we have taken a number of steps to cut expenses and streamline our organization, including instituting a hiring freeze, limiting travel, cancelling conferences, and reducing non-personnel costs, resulting in savings of more than $9 million. Unfortunately, additional measures were needed and as a result, the ACLU National Office has been forced to eliminate 36 staff positions, which represents 10% of the current staff. Although we did everything in our power to avoid taking this painful step, it was necessary in order to protect our long term viability and ensure that the ACLU has the flexibility and strength to meet the challenges ahead. In addition, we are freezing salaries for the next fiscal year, which will save an additional 11 positions, and our executive director has voluntarily reduced his pay by 15%. We are confident that making tough financial decisions in the short term will serve to strengthen the organization for generations to come," said Romero.

UPDATE II: Sources familiar with the ACLU's situation say that the two major foundations were the JEHT and Picower Foundations, which were wiped out by Madoff. Another major ACLU donor, Peter Lewis, has also been pounded by the economic crisis. Lewis' centrality to the funding of progressive organizations is hard to overstate. The name of the ACLU's Washington office is "The Peter B Lewis Center for Civil Liberties."

Well at least Madoff is an equal opportunity loser.

Hey, how about getting some of those globalistic thugs out of the organization, and brig it back to the organization it once was?

Its easy for extreme right wingers to rail against the ACLU......and the media and the "liberals" and the intellectual elite and Hollywood and the Clintons and anyone not NRA and regulation and activists and judges and The gays and the United Nations......... but its easier to criticize than to be right (and I mean right as in correct). When is the last time the Right was right? Hagel or Warner maybe.

The ACLU will survive to do its controversial work as long as civil liberties need protecting. Right now is not the economic time to need help from anyone however so we should be that much happier Dick Cheney is history. Maybe civil liberties will survive on their own merit once again.

The money is somewhere it just didn't go up in thin air. Those whor eceived dividens from madoff got them from a sham and should have to return them I am sure the ACLU knows this.

Evidently SOMETHING good came out of Madoff's schemes....the ACLU has done more harm than good in the last 25 years......what it was founded on, has been undermined by flawed direction and manipulation..........

Yeah... Being for the Constitution. How un-American.

The Republican idea of freedom is being free, save that people get snatched off the street by secret police and accused of "terrorism," ordinary citizens get wiretapped without any warrants or oversight, show trials with valid evidence excluded were set up at Guantanamo, the FBI could look at your library files to see if you were a true-blue American, supporting a specific political point of view was a condition of staying employed at the justice department, reports and science that didn't fit the party line were suppressed, secret meetings with unknown participants determined US Energy policy - and practically bankrupted us, political friends of the ruling party ducked government regulations, the president was put in power by the Supreme Court appointed by his father deciding on a contested election in the state where his brother was governor and his campaign chairperson was managing the vote count...

There's a book length more, but I'm out of room...

And this, kiddies, is why the rest of the world didn't listen to the Bush Administration when they tried to encourage democracy around the world; everyone knew the Bushies were behaving the same as any repressive dictatorship.

How will the next appeal for funds from the ACLU read? Mr Madoff is said to have taken Osama bin Laden for a billion or so. Did Mr Madoff contact Wayne La Pierre or anybody with access to the NRA's funds?

I ceased supporting the national ACLU when I learned Romero pays himself over $300,000 per year to be its leader. In fact, Charity Navigator reports the top four national ACLU officers make a combined almost $1 million per year! Gosh, I don't know.........you could buy a whole lot of justice for that money. I fail to see why they should make many multiples of what my sister, a full-time K-1 teacher, makes.

Most likely because they could make multiples of their current salary in other jobs. Right? Wrong? I don't know, but often true of the top people in public service that are worth their skin. As distinct from republicans and suchlike things. :)

I don't agree with everything the ACLU has done over the years. However, they have done more good than bad and we are better for having them around than not at all.

Did the ACLU protect Jessica Flower's right to be free from sexual harrassment?

Do you mean Gennifer Flowers, the ex-gf of President Clinton? I don't think that was sexual harassment. More a consenting adults kind of thing.

Didn't Gennifer Flowers brag about having sex with Clinton when he was in the governor's office while looking out of his office window when an unknowning Hillary walked the grounds? Sounds like Hillary was the one who needed a lawyer, not grown ass Flowers who was knowingly having a relationship with a married man. We all make choices and she made hers . . .period.

It protected the right of the Klan to march. It has protected the right of free speech for people I don't agree with at all. Why don't you do some research about their cases over time, rather than drinking the kool-aide of the right wing before you accuse them of solely protecting one group.

Main page headline: 'ACLU wiped out by Madoff...'

The headline on the main page for this article is misleading, the ACLU didn't have money invested with Madoff, but the Foundations that back the ACLU did. A lot of people only will see the headlines, so please do a better job of reporting the facts accurately.

Headline should have been: 'Backers of ACLU wiped out by Madoff'

not sure how I feel about the ACLU. Lately they seem to be more concerned with rights of Mexican immigrants over those American's rights. So unless I've missed something that's a bit un-American. And God knows why they need to worry about Rush -- he's just a waste of space
