Blagojevich: It's A Plot To Raise Taxes, I'm A Soldier For Constitutional Rights

Gov. Rod Blagojevich continued his assault on the rules of his upcoming impeachment trial Friday morning, telling a radio audience that the "fix is in" and his removal is part of a plan to enact a massive tax increase.

"They want to get me out fast so they could put a huge income-tax increase on the people of Illinois," the governor said in a 43-minute interview this morning on WLS-AM 890's Don Wade & Roma show. "And they want to raise the sales tax on gas. . . . If I'm out of the way, they can quietly push this through."

"If I participate in this sham impeachment, I will undermine the people," Blagojevich said, also calling himself "a soldier for constitutional rights."

Blagojevich's radio appearance was the first of a spate of media appearances meant to cast doubt on the legitimacy of the state Senate impeachment trial. The governor railed against the proceedings at a Friday afternoon news conference, describing the proceedings as a "hanging," and is reportedly in talks to appear on "The View" and "Good Morning America."
