DENVER — Disgraced evangelical leader Ted Haggard's former church disclosed Friday that the gay sex scandal that caused his downfall extends to a young male church volunteer who reported having a sexual relationship with Haggard _ a revelation that comes as Haggard tries to repair his public image.

Brady Boyd, who succeeded Haggard as senior pastor of the 10,000-member New Life Church in Colorado Springs, told The Associated Press that the man came forward to church officials in late 2006 shortly after a Denver male prostitute claimed to have had a three-year cash-for-sex relationship with Haggard.

Boyd said an "overwhelming pool of evidence" pointed to an "inappropriate, consensual sexual relationship" that "went on for a long period of time ... it wasn't a one-time act." Boyd said the man was in his early 20s at the time. He said he was certain the man was of legal age when it began.

Reached Friday night, Haggard declined to comment and said all interviews would have to be arranged through a publicist for HBO, which is airing a documentary about him this month.

Boyd said the church reached a legal settlement to pay the man for counseling and college tuition, with one condition being that none of the parties involved discuss the matter publicly.

Boyd said a Colorado Springs TV station reached him Thursday to say the young man was planning to provide a detailed report of his relationship with Haggard to the station. Boyd said the church preferred to keep the matter private, but it was the man's decision to go public.

The disclosure comes as Haggard, 52, is about to give a series of high-profile interviews to promote the cable documentary about his time in exile. He is scheduled to appear on CNN's Larry King Live on Thursday, the date of the documentary's premiere, and already has taped "The Oprah Winfrey Show."

In early 2007, New Life Church disclosed that an investigation uncovered new evidence that Haggard engaged in "sordid conversation" and "improper relationships" _ but didn't go into detail. Earlier, a church board member had said there was no evidence that Haggard had sexual relations with anyone but Mike Jones, the former male prostitute.

Story continues below

Haggard confessed to undisclosed "sexual immorality" after Jones' allegations and resigned as president of the National Association of Evangelicals and from New Life Church, where he faced being fired.

Anticipating criticism of the settlement with the former church volunteer, Boyd said Friday that it was in the best interests of all involved. He would not name the volunteer or the settlement amount.

"It wasn't at all a settlement to make him be quiet or not tell his story," Boyd said. "Our desire was to help him. Here was a young man who wanted to get on with his life. We considered it more compassionate assistance _ certainly not hush money. I know what's what everyone will want to say because that's the most salacious thing to say, but that's not at all what it was."

He said that "secondarily, it's not great for our church either" that the story be told. Boyd said Haggard knew about the settlement two years ago.

In a letter e-mailed Friday to New Life Church members, Boyd said of the settlement and agreement not to talk: "This decision was made not as an attempt to conceal wrongdoings, but to protect him from those who would seek to exploit him. His actions now suggest that he has changed his mind."

The letter said the church "received reports of a number of incidents of inappropriate behavior" after Haggard's fall. "In each case, we have tried our very best to do the right thing each time, including disciplinary action when appropriate."

Boyd said the "inappropriate behavior" referred to the man who was the volunteer involved with Haggard. After Haggard's fall, another church staff member resigned after admitting to what was described as "sexual misconduct."

Boyd said the church will not take action against the man if he tells his story in the press.

"We have legal standing to do that, but not the desire to," he said.

Boyd said he had spoken to the man once and came away with the impression that he was speaking out because of the documentary. "I think what caused this young man to be a bit aggravated was Ted being seen as a victim, when he himself had experienced a great deal of hurt," Boyd said. "I seriously doubt this man would have come forward if the documentary had not been made."

A spokeswoman for the documentary, "The Trials of Ted Haggard," declined to comment Friday.

David Clohessy, national director of SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests _ which has largely focused on the Catholic sexual abuse scandal but also speaks out on cases involving Protestant clergy _ said the new disclosures about Haggard are more disturbing because they involves a church volunteer.

"Technically, legally, they were both adults," Clohessy said. "Psychologically and emotionally, Haggard was dramatically more powerful. ... By definition, any sexual contact between a congregant and minister is inherently abusive and manipulative."

In an AP interview this month before an appearance in front of TV critics in California, Haggard described his sexuality as complex and something that can't be put into "stereotypical boxes."

Maybe he should try one of those religious anti gay organizations that will pray the gay out of him!
Yeah, that should make him straight. it has been so successful. NOT!

His congregation and followers should not take any action. They know the "Devil Made him do it." If they pray enough his homosexuality will go away.

My advice to Mr Haggard :

1. "Come out!"

2. "Get lost!"

I work for a non-profit agency in drug and alcohol prevention. Does anyone else here think that the fact Haggard's being "treated" for his homosexuality, but not his apparent meth use kind of sums up the bizarre priorities of the Religious "right"?

*gasp*

Wow, what a shocking revelation! LOL

If this man had any smarts he would DISAPPEAR into obscurity. Or, just live an openly gay lifestyle and stop trying to make his behaviors into something deviant when they are clearly what god intended him to be. His behaviors are those of a gay (or bisexual) man. He is gay (or bisexual). Period. And I doubt even his ex-churchmembers care at this point.

Actually he could start a whole new career if he would just move forward, divorce his poor wife, and minister to the GLBT community. It would be a he!! of a lot more honest!

She's concerned about her children and the effect a divorce would have on them and how hard it would be to start over at her age. Why else do women stay with men who don't love them appropriately.

You mean to tell me that there are still people who attend that church? I would think by now their association with him would have offended their sensibilities to the point that they would find a new venue for their antics. Even the most staunch believer would have moved on from that place.

No Haggard, it is not complex. You are gay. Just admit it.

I think we would all be better off if there was more compassion for Haggard. I'm not saying to forgive all his sins and abuses, but make some attempt to understand him, not for his sake, but for our own.

Ted Haggard, and for that matter Larry Craig, were not born evil? They did not grow up with the overwhelming desire to demonize others and then perform the very same acts they demonized.

What they were born was gay and what society did was make them ashamed of who they were so that they chose to take positions that allowed them to hide who they really were while at the same time exercising their own self-loathing.

The guy community should have compassion and understanding for who Haggard and Craig really are and tell them they will be welcomed and given an opportunity to earn foregiveness if they take the first step and admit who and what they are.

I don't expect them to take you up on the offer, but the message to other closeted people would be powerful.

No no no! You must demonize them! They made huge amounts of money by whipping up frenzies against others who lived just as they did. THAT is the point! When they step into the spotlight and say they were wrong to bring so much hate against fellow human beings. Then people can consider forgiveness. No interviews except through HBO---still making money from the hate he preached.

It is a great point, but they themselves haven't come to the point of accepting who they, so how can the gay community forgive them, when they can't forgive themselves for the evil that flowed from there mouths to millions of ears.

I don't say anybody should forgive them... only that they should know that IF they come clean and IF they work to absolve their sins, there can be forgiveness. Again, I don't really expect this to bring them into the fold, but maybe it will bring others.

SethBLiNK, I agree with you. These two men were not born hating themselves or other gay people. They were taught to be self-hating and ashamed. That shame and self-hatred influenced everything else.

I believe they both have probably always been afraid to be open and honest about this (and still are). All the anti-gay work they have done was, the way I imagine it, a way for them to say to themselves and others, "I'm not like them!"

I have a theory for why gay-bashing christians are so frequently discovered to be gay or having gay sex.

The theory goes like this: christians have gay sex because they are curious about it. Christian conservatives are OBSESSED and fascinated with gay sex! They talk about it and think about it constantly. Haggard frequently talked about gay sex and many christians talk about it in graphic terms.

Every time they condemn gay sex, they are picturing it in their minds, and have a fixation on the images of gay sex. They "know" its wrong to want gay sex, so they indulge their fascination by condemning it. In other words, condemnation is the only way for them to talk about it in a way acceptable to other christians. And they want to talk and think about gay sex, so they condemn it.

After years and years of this fascination, obsession and repeated picturing of the gay sex act, their curiosity overwhelms them, and they have to try it. Then they discover they actually enjoy it, and the obsession grows.

Thats my theory.

ever hear of ocham's razor? How about this theory: They have gay sex because they are gay. End of story. Now they need to stop being hypocritical.

They go to conservative religion because society has tried to convince them that gay is wrong. So they fight their gayness in the evangelical church, and fight others like them, rather that simply confront reality. Many of the gay bashers (and many republicans) are clearly gay, and they are just fighting themselves. A very sad situation.

i dont think it is that complex. they have sex with people of the same sex because they are gay.

I think you are putting the cart before the horse. They didn't obsess over gay sex and then become curious. They were gay from day one and fought against it by taking on these hateful personnas. We are introduced to them as anti-gay christians and then we learn they are themselves gay, but that's not the true chronology. They were gay first, then self-hating gays, then public gay-haters who were secretly gay.
