WASHINGTON — The recession is killing jobs at an alarming pace, with tens of thousands of new layoffs announced Monday by some of the biggest names in American business _ Pfizer, Caterpillar and Home Depot.

More pink slips, pay freezes and other hits are expected to slam workers in the months ahead as companies desperately look for ways to survive.

"We're just seeing the tip of the iceberg _ the big firms," said Rebecca Braeu, economist at John Hancock Financial Services. "There's certainly other firms beneath them that will lay off workers as quickly or even quicker."

Looking ahead, economists predicted a net loss of at least 2 million jobs _ possibly more _ this year even if President Barack Obama's $825 billion package of increased government spending and tax cuts is enacted. Last year, the economy lost a net 2.6 million jobs, the most since 1945, though the labor force has grown significantly since then.

The unemployment rate, now at a 16-year high of 7.2 percent, could hit 10 percent or higher later this year or early next year, under some analysts' projections.

Obama called on Congress Monday to speedily enact his recovery plan, warning that the nation can't afford "distractions" or "delays."

With the recession expected to drag on through much of this year, more damage will be inflicted on both companies and workers.

The mounting toll was visible Monday as roughly 40,000 more U.S. workers got the grim news.

Pharmaceutical giant Pfizer Inc., which is buying rival drugmaker Wyeth in a $68 billion deal, and Sprint Nextel Corp., the country's third-largest wireless provider, said they each will slash 8,000 jobs.

Home Depot Inc., the biggest home improvement retailer in the U.S., will get rid of 7,000 jobs, and General Motors Corp. said it will cut 2,000 jobs at plants in Michigan and Ohio because of slow sales.

"We are seeing no improvement in labor market conditions," said Sal Guatieri, senior economist at BMO Capital Markets Economics. "This year could be as bad as last year in terms of layoffs."

In response to deteriorating business conditions, Caterpillar Inc., the world's largest maker of mining and construction equipment, disclosed nearly 20,000 job cuts, most of which already have been made. They include 5,000 new layoffs of white collar workers, which will occur globally by the end of March.

Earlier actions included the elimination of 2,500 Caterpillar workers through a buyout offer announced in December, the termination of about 8,000 contract and temp agency workers, and the reduction of 4,000 full-time factory workers through firings and buyouts.

Texas Instruments Inc., which makes chips for cell phones and other gadgets, will cut 3,400 jobs due to slumping demand. The Dallas-based company said Monday it will slash 12 percent of its work force _ 1,800 jobs through layoffs and another 1,600 through voluntary retirements and departures. And Brooks Automation Inc. said it plans to get rid of 350 jobs, or 20 percent of its work force. It will be the second round of cuts for Brooks, which makes software and equipment for chip manufacturers.

Oilfield services provider Halliburton Co. said it will eliminate jobs in markets particularly hard hit by the recession, though it didn't provide details. Its larger rival Schlumberger Ltd. said last week it will cut up to 5,000 jobs worldwide in the first half of 2009 and consider further reductions this spring.

The flurry of layoffs comes on the heels of similar action by big-name companies just last week.

Microsoft Corp. said it will slash up to 5,000 jobs over the next 18 months. Intel Corp. said it will cut up to 6,000 manufacturing jobs. And United Airlines parent UAL Corp. said it would get rid of 1,000 jobs, on top of 1,500 axed late last year.

And there's no end in sight. In a survey by the National Association for Business Economics, 39 percent of forecasters predicted job reductions through attrition or "significant" layoffs over the next six months, up from 32 percent in the previous survey in October. Around 45 percent in the current survey anticipated no change in hiring plans. About 17 percent thought hiring would increase.

A new report by the placement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas found that companies are often turning to a creative combination of measures to cut costs _ beyond layoffs. Those measures include pay freezes or reductions, forced vacations, travel cutbacks and the elimination of year-end bonuses.

"Many companies cannot cut their payrolls as deeply as they have in previous downturns, simply because they did not do as much hiring during the most recent expansion," said John Challenger, president of the firm. "As a result, they are forced to find alternative ways to keep costs down."

Not all the economic news was as grim Monday. Sales of previously owned homes and a separate barometer of economic activity each logged unexpected gains in December. But economists didn't view them as signs of improvement.

"Keep the party hats in boxes and the Champagne in the cellar," said Bernard Baumohl, chief global economist at the Economic Outlook Group. "It's one month's set of data and they tell us little about the future."

Economists said the uptick in home sales was due to sinking prices spurring buyers. In the other report, a government-influenced balloon in the nation's money supply largely affected the outcome.

Wall Street closed moderately higher. The Dow Jones industrials rose 38.47,or 0.48 percent, to 8,116.03, after briefly moving into negative territory.

The National Association of Realtors said sales of existing homes rose 6.5 percent to an annual rate of 4.74 million last month. Buyers took advantage of dramatically lower prices, especially in distressed states like California, Florida and Nevada, where foreclosures are soaring.

The nationwide median sales price sank to $175,400, down 15.3 percent from a year ago. That marked the biggest annual drop on records going back to 1968. The median is the middle point, where half the homes sell for more and half for less.

For all of last year, existing-home sales totaled 4.9 million, down more than 13 percent from the previous year, and the lowest since 1997.

Meanwhile, the Conference Board's monthly forecast of economic activity rose 0.3 percent in December. But that pickup was influenced mainly by federal efforts to ease the credit crisis, which caused the supply of money to expand. If the jump in the money supply were excluded, the board's index would have dropped sharply, economists said.

The national economy, meanwhile, is continuing to backslide.

Many analysts predict the economy will have contracted at a pace of 5.4 percent in the fourth quarter when the government releases that report Friday. If they are correct, that would mark the worst performance since a 6.4 percent drop in the first quarter of 1982. The economy is still contracting now _ at a pace of around 4 percent, according to some projections.

Give every family 2-300,000.00. Pay off your mortgage you CC and auto. This would unpug the banks free up for borrowing.
Pay off my mortgage, other debts and then Im willing to take a chance on a small business rather than rely on competing for other jobs. I would be willing to create jobs and support the economy as I would hope they would support my small business. Let the big business all leave the country and see where they fall into place.

Main street would be boosted and it can trickle up for a change. Trickle down is impossible when the the faucet or rains are plugged. This money is our debt both now and future so why give it to those already proven to be the biggest American ponzi's, lies, worthless stocks, on and on.

The only solution I see is for business to come back home here to the US and actually employ us citizens. Until they do that I see no real recovery and only more downslide. Face it globalization has killed us. Chinese, Mexican, Arab labor killed us.

American business need for high profts have killed them.

Unemployment is still low, so US companies are employing most its citizens.

It doesn't feel low to the masses that are unemployed. It's just that the population has grown. There's plenty of workers available for the few jobs left, relatively.

We're in a state of emergency, according to a state unemployment worker I spoke to.

Hungry? Unemployed (yet) ?
Eat your foreign-built car.
This was a popular mantra in the '80s when things were dreadful yet not as odious as they will become here as this Economy continues to crater.
Seems more appropriate now for a Society which relies on developing nations and the equivalent of slave labor to do their heavy-lifting.
Reaping only what we've sown.

Carving-out your territory in a 'man's world' still isn't a piece of cake, eh? I saw my late-Wife compete in her field and I was thrilled when she racked-up victories here 'n there.
I believe that to the extent that it does "Take A Village" that the interests of the 'Village' and it's inhabitants are paramount. Even if that 'Village' is comprised of 50 united states as it were.
Unions did carry that standard for the longest while, that of : 'Build, Earn and Spend, Here' for the longest time. It might be time to remind folks of that. Jobs: The Novelty Which Sustains People.

I would have glady bought a hybrid American-built car, but Toyota had the best. GM built electric cars for awhile, leased them to some 5,000 people in the LA area some ten years ago, and then five years ago took them back and had them crushed! I'm sorry, but when the American auto manufacturers dump their stocks in Mobil/Exxon and Texaco/Chevron, and start making electric cars and hybrids, then maybe they will start making money again, because people do not want to drive around in gas guzzling over-sized SUVs! And by the way, if Amtrak got funded like it should, and there was more public transportation, insteadof having forfeign built trains brought into the country, our auto manufacturers, or Boeing or Lockheed, could be making locomotives and train sets for light rail systems and longer-distance passenger rail services!

In the long run, this will be very positive for the U.S. People will be forced to live within their means, and not on a bunch of credit cards.

Imagine that! Paying off your bills, saving money, paying cash -- cash! -- for almost everything.

A painful, but valuable, lesson.

I'm tired of the phony moral high ground statement, my wife and I had zero credit-card balances when Bush took office in 2001, our combined incomes were 130,000 a year, our mortgage was less than a100,000 dollars on a 172,000 3 bedroom home which we put 30% done on in 1994. I also own a place in the New York state which my parents purchased when I was 9 years old. I liked my job and I had a considerable amount of money savings in the bank. That's all changed, I have been underemployed for 4 years and my wife hasn't seen any kind of raise in 6 years. Our property taxes have migrated from 3,600 in 2003 to 6,500 now, Every utility bill I pay is laden with higher taxes and fees, the high oil prices drove up electric and heating bills. Don't lay living with in our means crap on me, I' pretty sick of it, and no I don't have flat screen TV.

Actually, BPCA, we're in the same boat. I still don't make as much as I did on active duty, and I've been retired for twelve years. I've seen my property taxes go through the roof, taxes, taxes, surcharges, etc . . . not much disposable income left at the end of the month.

I think if people could keep more of what they earn, the economy would be in much better shape.

I don't have a flat screen T.V., either. And, my primary vehicle is a 2002 Ford E-150 with 158,000 miles on it.

So it's George W's fault that you're now underemployed and your wife hasn't seen a raise in four years? If your property taxes went up, the value of your house went up. Utility bills are cheap relative to your income.

These comments are interesting as they provide a forum to vent, but how about some solutions folks?

Frankly, I do feel past policies are to blame, but so what? What can we do to empower small businesses of all kinds? Large corporations and governments simply can not provide the numbers of jobs needed to get us out of this mess.

Microsoft is laying off a huge amount of people, yet Bill Gates was on the Hill just this past summer lobbying for more H1 visas, because he said Microsoft could not hire enough solfware engineers, really. Kramer was praising Caterpillar for moving much of it's manufacturing operations to Mexico, thats interesting, Brigs & Stratton moved all it's manufacturing to China and the products reflect it. My 5.5 hp Brigs motor in my Snapper pusher is junk, the intake assembly fell off already and I'm not sure if it can be fixed.

The large home improvement company I work for has not been able to pay vendors for the last two months. No sales/money coming in. Companies we owe have been calling and calling, bugging us for payment and all we can do is politely ask them to be patient. This is a shame as we always prided ourselves on being able to quickly pay our vendors and maintain healthy, productive relationships. Many good long time people here are gone, laid off. We, the remaining employees, all have taken 20% pay cuts, and our CEO, to his credit, along with other top execs, have taken a 40% pay cut! This is getting very frightful - it seems to be snowballing, getting worse with each day. And our political leaders dicker and delay in an never ending pissing contest. Partisan political BS is one major cause of this terrible dilemma.

...And the Republicans continue to demand more tax cuts....

"Why is anyone listening to the Republicans?", Bob Herbert asked in his NYT editorial of this morning? I've been asking myself that same question. Does our corporate media have any independence or integrity left? Have their memories of what has transpired over these past eight years been erased? Why do they pretend that these goofballs have anything of value to say about anything anymore?

One would have to be as foolish as they are to take anything that they have to say seriously. The only media attention this group of tax-cut happy clowns should be getting is from the Cartoon cable channel.

I am absolutely astounded that our mainstream media continues to give these clowns any credibility on anything anymore, particularly economics. After their disastrous performance while they have held the reins of power for these past eight years, they should be relegated to permanent clown status, forever ostracized to the hinterlands of political minorities

Start your own business doing what?? retail is too risky and what sevices small scale are yet solid?? My sister looked into retail small shop type. 20 yrs behind the scenes in large business, she has much useful experience to operate a business. In the end a small business, factor in how much you need to sell EVERYDAY just to break even in an enviroment that is so scetchy, is a pretty big move. What are people still purchasing other than essentials Then try to compete with the Bed Baths and Beyonds or stores like that is very difficult. To go into service you may need to have an expertise cornered and how many of us have that

We are in dire straights here - we need to come together ourselves for solutions. Corporate greed is only going to trickle down the yellow stuff to their employees.

I just had to put this our there because it's just too rich (pun intended). Tucker Carlson was just on Morning Joe pushing the Do Nothing alternative to the nation's economic woes (it did concede that unemployment insurance should be extended), and, in an effort to sound sympathetic, said that he, too, has faced unemployment and it was "crushing." OMG, all that was wounded when he was unemployed was his pride. His mother is a Swanson Foods heiress. He'll never in his life need to worry about being out in the street once his savings runs out during "hard times."
