LUBBOCK, Texas — Officials say a FedEx cargo plane landing at a Lubbock, Texas, airport veered off the runway, crashed and caught fire, but that both crew members walked away from the plane.

Lubbock Preston Smith International Airport director James Loomis says the ATR-42 twin-turboprop aircraft landed just after 4:30 a.m. Tuesday. He says crews extinguished the fire quickly.

WATCH:

The plane landed in a freezing mist, but Loomis says weather was not a factor in the incident.

The crew members were being evaluated at University Medical Center in Lubbock.

It is a Twin engine turboprop. Fed Ex contracts and flys F-27, Shorts SD-330&360 turbo props as well as some DHC dash 8's, BE-1900's & others. They also have a fleet of Cessna C-208's ( the C-208"s are a single engine turbo prop). In the video you can see the #1 engine's prop feathered and windmilling. No jet!

jamieg25... you should probably look a little more closely before making posts like that... the prop is clearly visable and STILL SPINNING on the left wing. That would definately make it a turboprop and not a jet.

i want to correct my last post

what they were showing did not appear to be a turboprop plane but information from another source showed more of the plane that crashed and that would be a turboprop

there is jet aircraft that looks exactly as what was shown and my experience with fedex made me beleive that what they were showing was the jet aircraft that is used most commonly

i think that the person writing the report needs to do more research because that is not a twin turboprop plane

i know what a turboprop plane is because i spent several years working at a airport

a turboprop plane has propellers and that is a jet aircraft in the video

The two pilots WALKED away? I hope they ran, with the thing on fire like that....

Hmmm..... lemme see here.... they were landing in freezing mist yet it is reported that "weather was not a factor in this incident"..... I'm not sure I believe that.... not even for a minute.

They say that to cover their collective @ss for bad judgment in allowing the plane to land under those conditions....

Not sure how familiar you are with flying, but airplanes are designed and more than capable of landing without issue in the conditions reported here.

The weather should not have been a factor unless the pilots made it a factor.

This movie's FX are terrible. I mean, the thing just sits there and sort of steams. Even for a jet, that's terrible acting. I mean, what's its motivation? What's the back story? Where's the joy, the pathos? Gimme something to work with here...

No denouement either. Although I did appreciate the turboprop spinning lazily off to the right. I give it one star for effort.

Yeah, I mean, couldn't it have at least exploded or something (after the pilots were safely away)....

Wasn't Buddy Holly from Lubbock, also?

I think it's known as Prairie Dog Town, in other trivia news.

Did it land on Bushs house in Dallas or destroy his ranch in Crawford, if not then don't bother me about it cause I aint interested. When one does then I'll be thrilled to read about it.

Consider yourself lucky as the laptop battery probably exploded causing the fire on the airplane. Just cancel your credit card order.

But note that in the two so far this year, no one has died. I'd say that's an auspicious sign of some kind....
