First Posted: 2/28/09 Updated: 9/29/11

Shoe Polish and the Environment
In Los Angeles and most other places, shoe polish is disallowed in the regular trash. It must be disposed of as a hazardous material, because it often contains materials like naphtha and turpentine.

Polish Your Shoes With a Banana Peel

How about using something that is not in and of itself an environmental disaster?

Just saying.. Bananas are hardly (at least for those of us who live in the NE, or other areas where banana plants would not survive the winter) environmentally friendly purchases.

(not saying they're worse than shoe polish, but compared to say bees wax and an oil that doesn't require the destruction of large swaths of rain forest, and nearly slave conditions for the workers, they're pretty not-green).

I used a banana peel to polish my shoes and it turned out great!
Then about a week later I recieved a letter from the "MATUOBP" union. The order was cease and desists from using banana peels. That is one strong union and I informed them it wouldn't happen again. That "Monkeys Aganist The Use Of Banana Peels" is just to powerful to monkey with.

I hate breathing those nasty shoe polish chemicals into my lungs and having them stink up my living spaces. I've tried banana peels and they work pretty well, but if you need a more substantial goop for your shoes, you can make your own shoe polish from natural ingredients. Inspired by the recipe of Dr. Marten's Wonder Balsam (which is too expensive for my tastes), I melted beeswax, lanolin, and coconut oil together and rubbed it into my shoes, and it works great to waterproof them. Now to put my old tins of toxic polish on freecycle, so someone who isn't ready to go the natural route will get to enjoy the nasty, old-fashioned stuff a bit longer.

You can also use a banana peel to get stains out of your clothes, deodorize your underarms and even check for counterfeit money!

videojug is a brilliant site. careers are explained by veritable experts: more of the howto and some sllly stuff too such as how to fold a shirt with your feet.

I wear Danner's. Low maintenance, long lasting, can be rebuilt for decades. Keep your banana's. I use a nice puddle of mud to wipe them and an endless amount of snow to sparkle them up. (off topic, orange/lemon peels used as a defensive weapon to home invaders.) =)
