WASHINGTON — A day after President Barack Obama publicly teased local school officials for canceling classes because of wintry weather, he and his wife visited their younger daughter's school on Thursday.

Obama and his wife, Michelle, left the White House around 8:15 a.m. for the ride to the Bethesda, Md., campus of the Sidwell Friends School, a private school where their 7-year-old daughter, Sasha, is in the second grade.

The Obamas spent a little more than an hour at the school attending a class presentation before they returned to the White House. Michelle Obama's mother, Marian Robinson, joined them.

Obama had ridiculed local officials for closing school Wednesday, saying "we're going to have to apply some flinty Chicago toughness to this town."

Older daughter Malia, 10, is a fifth-grader at Sidwell's middle school in the District of Columbia.

Oh, please - it's not like he has to walk very far in the cold. Shallow and overdone reporting again.

Pathetic.

I stopped getting the chance to match colors when my boys gave up their (outfit-matching) pacifiers. I wish my husband would match with me.

Unfortunately, I'll bet that a lot who read this article think that BO and his wife visiting their kids school is an extraordinary thing to do. It is not. All parents that have their brains north of their navel will participate in their kid’s school experience. It is just one step in the process called parenting and good for them.

Oh geez, while looking at the pic of the Pres and his wife I realized, how could anyone NOT be happy to have this extremely intelligent, strong, and DANG fine looking people as their parents. Malia and Sasha are destined to be amazing people.

Yes, I have to say I can't remember a headline, ever, that read "President Bush and Laura off to Camp David." Just sounds wierd doesn't it?

Perhaps it is because of the "every woman" image Michelle projects, her authentic, more natural approach. I will give the benefit of the doubt here. Regardless, she should be referred to as the First Lady, or Mrs. Obama, or Michelle Obama.

Some will say it's trivial, but words are important, and they are insidious. Before you know it they define our attitudes, because they are the foremost way we communicate.

Her title is First Lady due to her husbands title, but like many First Ladies before her, the title of Mr.s is commonly used just as much. It really just depends on who is doing the reporting. It is not a show of disrespect to minorities. I'm Black and even I can realize that.

In California we stay home because of the rain, fog or it's too cold.We don't mind if people make fun of us and I am sure the people of DC don't care either since it was a joke and accepted as such.

And 'cold' is 60'. What a scream. And can't go out if it rains. It's true. Scared of rain. HAHAHA You would have died over the frozen rain, (that's ice, in case you forgot) falling on us this week.

Here here. In Oregon we sometimes close schools too early and fear weather we're not accustomed to. It was a joke. Heck we were just back home in Hawaii and the kdis had a storm day off school. He would have made the same sort of joke there and that's where he's from originally.

BTW His home state of Hawaii loves and adores him and is extatic to have a president who knows what it's like to live there. You go, Mr. President. Much aloha, kama'aina!

yeah, here in NC a little ice or snow (one half inch) can totally paralyze our entire area, and has in the past. Thing about places like these: we so rarely have a lot of frozen stuff that we don't have the equipment to deal with it, etc., and usually it is gone the next day. One problem, though: missed school days in Jan. mean longer school years in June.

The media should have been pushing the fact that they visited their children school and encourage parents all mover the country to do the same. I really believe that was the intended message. No, he was not ridiculing the school system, he was teasing and joking. Just a good sense of humor in hard times. This is refreshing. But President., Please wear your overcoat. And YES, her title is FIRST LADY MICHELLE OBAMA OR MRS OBAMA. That is the reason a lot of us does not care for the main stream media, they have there overt way of disrespecting minorities.

I so agree with you! "Obama had ridiculed local officials..." No it was a joke and so much apart of his charm. We will have to see if 8 years in the oval office and these type of portrayals by the media will dampen his charm. I really, really hope not. Stay back news media! Give us a break with these over the top headlines and inappropriate interpretations of the Obama's comments!

I grew up in NYC. As a child, going to Public School, we used to LIVE for those Snow Days! We'd stay up all night listening to the weather reports -- just praying for a Snow Day! Then I lived in the Chicago area for a lot of years and spent the month of August just dreading the arrival of Winter. True bliss in the SF Bay area... yeah, my kids have Earthquake Drills, but they'll never experience those special days off from school due to a blizzard (I hope!)

I agree. Its First Lady Michelle! Thank you!

And I disagree on the 'Obama ridicule' the school system. I watched the actual moment when he was teasing and he did not ridicule. He was teasing. Some reporters need to not exaggerate and report factually. Ridicale has a negative connotation and he was not ridiculing; he was teasing! Another black mark for the american news media who I detest everyday in how they report the news..They need a overhaul!

Watch the headline! First Lady Michelle, or Mrs. Obama, please.

See 2351 below you.

A fish stinks from the head down. I would gather that would mean a rose smells sweet from the head down. Which would you rather smell. We already had a fish leading the country, let's try letting the rose bloom for once.

I am happy to see them visit the school. I hope that this influences a lot of parents to visit their children's schools. Kids that age like to show their parents off. Now, as for Malia, I don't think that she wants them coming to her school.
