Suzanne Somers' Daily Routine: Hormones, Vaginal Injections And 60 Pills (VIDEO)

Huffington Post   First Posted: 3/1/09 Updated: 5/25/11

Suzanne Somers

Suzanne Somers showed "Oprah" viewers her intricate daily routine on Thursday's show, the topic of which was hormone replacement. For years Somers has loudly spoken and written about bioidentical hormones and how she has benefited from taking them.

Somers invited cameras into her home to show her daily routine, seen below. First she rubs hormone lotion on the inside of her upper arm, always estrogen and two weeks a month progesterone. She then injects estriol vaginally, which she did not let cameras see.

Then there are her pills, all 60 of them. 40 in the morning with a smoothie and the rest at night. She admits the pill quantity is extreme, saying, "I know I look like some kind of fanatic."

Thanks to her routine, and exercise, Somers claims to have beaten what she calls "the Seven Dwarfs of Menopause": Itchy, Bitchy, Sleepy, Sweaty, Bloated, Forgetful and All Dried Up."

I was born in the same year as Suzanne Somers and I look as good as she does and take none of those things-its good she is making lots of money to pay for all those 60 pills a day. This is an obsession of the rich hollywood group that wants to sell her books etc. and she must get some of those pills for free for doing the advertising. She is very smart about money-its' a money making scheme. And, growing older with grace won't sell her books. She is not one bit embarassed to come on national tv and say all the money she spends on myself, my body and me-and, all the good she could do for the less fortunate, children in orphanages. I've been praying for her to know Jesus Christ and that HE loves her so much. It goes to show you-the rich never have enough-.Its good to take care of ones health, but, normal people cannot afford all those pills like the wealthy, and, I really know I would not take all of those. She is not a poster lady for America. Its all about making money for herself-saying how she is 'giving to help mankind' wouldn't get her a dime-but, this kind of thing sells her books etc. She could be obsessive about money. Its sad, really, she is to be pitied.

There is a lot of information on the web regarding Wyeth's lobbying and propaganda against BHRT. I was interviewed by a Congressional Committee regarding my opinion regarding hormone replacement therapy. I told them that I have benefited from taking bioidentical hormones for more than 20 years. I had been prescribed Premarin before seeking out doctors that could help me. Premarin is one of Wyeth's products. They have been losing money ever since women stopped taking Premarin and started using bioidentical hormones. Premarin is not only cruelly derived, I haven't research all the studies, but I had really bad side effects. Please do your research. It's your body. Don't give over your health to anyone (no matter who the doctor is) without being informed.

"North American Menopause Society’s Ties to Wyeth Pharmaceuticals"

"The North American Menopause Society (NAMS) describes itself as "the leading nonprofit scientific organization devoted to promoting women's health and quality of life through an understanding of menopause.” Unfortunately, as it advocates for policies that benefit Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, NAMS rarely discloses its numerous financial ties to the pharmaceutical manufacturer."

"The world’s number one manufacturer of prescription hormone products, Wyeth is waging a campaign to restrict patients’ access to one alternative to its products – compounded, bioidentical hormones. By limiting patients’ hormone treatment options, Wyeth would drive sales of its own, proprietary hormone products. NAMS is one of several organizations that receive money from Wyeth and support this campaign."

It has always been my understanding that a balanced diet will provide your body with what it requires to function.

Most if not all fanatical behavior is based on an underlying fear of some kind. Perhaps it is the fear of loosing her youth that motivates her to take health care to the extreme. At least she can afford it.

You are right. I am afraid. I am afraid of getting sick and debilitated and losing bone mass and getting other diseases.

I am not afraid of death. I am afraid of suffering. But, I am doing things about it. I take supplements. I take brht. I weight train. I eat healthy. I do yoga. I box. I try to live in the moment.

She is who she wants to be and that's her decision. We have no right to judge what she does for herself. That is totally her business and we are NOT in a position to police her business. Do your own thing and worry about it instead of worrying about hers.

Hey, if she is happy, more power to her. I think she is absolutely wrong and that diet and exercise are the way, but it is her call and her life. I love how sanctimonious some people get on here in their own little bubbles...

I really used to respect Suzanne Somers, and to each his own. But when I see her now, it is sort of scary that she is so obsessed with her looks. Most women who have any self esteen at all, are quite satisfied with themselves by her age.

Suzanne Somers is way past the age of menopause. She would have gone thru that a while ago. She has been talking about "menopause" side effects for YEARS.

She is a sweet, kind person, who has really made some inroads talking about agism and women. That is why it seems so sad that she is caving in to what she seemed to be fighting against years ago.

Women (and men) should get as much information as possible to make decisions for their individual health.

Letter sent by the International Academy of Compounding Pharmacists to the Oprah show to clarify information about compounding pharmacies and bioidentical hormone replacement therapy.

"Wyeth and other pharmaceutical giants are aggressively lobbying FDA and Congress to restrict your access to bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) and other compounded medicines. It doesn't matter what you or your doctor think; they want YOU to take THEIR one-size-fits-all hormones!"

She could have matured into a beautiful mature actress and Hollywood would have jumped at the chance to give her work, instead she became snake oil salesman who spends millions to try and look the way she looked in 1977 and failing.

She looks exactly what she is -- an old broad spending millons to stave off father time

I feel sorry for her - she still is trying to age through the eyes of someone else not herself. I would think at her age, she would have finally reached that point where you just don't give a d@mn what other people think about you and how you look...P.S. If she got a new haircut, that might do her wonders:)

You can look like a healthy 60 year old or you can look like an unhealthy 50 year old.

Susanne looks like an unhealthy 50 year old.

The fact is, she's 12 years older than Norma Desmond, who was played by 50 year old, whats-her-name.

She's become a screwball and that's scary. She was hip. She was the "it girl" and now this Norma Desmond crap.

Getting old is a btich, I guess.

anybody taking that many pills for menopausal symptoms is a bit over board in my opinion.
In the many comments I read, I haven't heard anyone mentioning Chinese herbs. Prescribed by a licensed Acupuncturist and herbalist (I'm in CA, where LAc is regulated by a state board), those herb formulas can be quite beneficial. I wouldn't buy anything in Chinatown, however, there are good manufacturing standards in herbal medicine too. I am taking herbs by Health concerns, tested for herbacides and other environmental poisons - and I am feeling much better: no more hotflashes, better sleep, and more energy. Of course that goes with exercise and healthy diet too.
Cinese medicine has been around for 3000 to 5000 years, and though many things have not yet been scientifically proven, many of those therapies do work (and the National Institute of Health is running studies left and right to prove - or disprove Chinese medicine)
There is nothing wrong with wanting to minimize hot flashes and other menopausal symptoms - but Suzanne Sommers is PLASTIC and ARTIFICIAL: She is clearly obsessed with her lost youth. Grow up and accept you are not 20 anymore. And stop claiming all you do is natural. Just look at the difference in skin between your face and your throat (Botox, chemical peels, and lifts anyone?)

She blasts chemicals and toxins at length. I do not think she would willingly put botox into her system.

What happens after menopause, though??
Still meds & injections??
