LOS ANGELES — The woman who gave birth to octuplets this week conceived all 14 of her children through in vitro fertilization, is not married and has been obsessed with having children since she was a teenager, her mother said.

Angela Suleman told The Associated Press she was not supportive when her daughter, Nadya Suleman, decided to have more embryos implanted last year.

"It can't go on any longer," she said in a phone interview Friday. "She's got six children and no husband. I was brought up the traditional way. I firmly believe in marriage. But she didn't want to get married."

Nadya Suleman, 33, gave birth Monday in nearby Bellflower. She was expected to remain in the hospital for at least a few more days, and her newborns for at least a month.

A spokeswoman at Kaiser Permanente Bellflower Medical Center said the babies were were progressing daily, with all eight breathing unassisted and being tube-fed.

While her daughter recovers, Angela Suleman is taking care of the other six children, ages 2 through 7, at the family home in Whittier, about 15 miles east of downtown Los Angeles.

She said she warned her daughter that when she gets home from the hospital, "I'm going to be gone."

Angela Suleman said her daughter always had trouble conceiving and underwent in vitro fertilization treatments because her fallopian tubes are "plugged up."

There were frozen embryos left over after her previous pregnancies and her daughter didn't want them destroyed, so she decided to have more children.

Her mother and doctors have said the woman was told she had the option to abort some of the embryos and, later, the fetuses. She refused.

Her mother said she does not believe her daughter will have any more children.

"She doesn't have any more (frozen embryos), so it's over now," she said. "It has to be."

Nadya Suleman wanted to have children since she was a teenager, "but luckily she couldn't," her mother said.

"Instead of becoming a kindergarten teacher or something, she started having them, but not the normal way," he mother said.

Her daughter's obsession with children caused Angela Suleman considerable stress, so she sought help from a psychologist, who told her to order her daughter out of the house.

"Maybe she wouldn't have had so many kids then, but she is a grown woman," Angela Suleman said. "I feel responsible, and I didn't want to throw her out."

Little psychological research has been conducted on the reasons some mothers seem hooked on repeated pregnancies. David Diamond, a co-director for the Center for Reproductive Psychology in San Diego, said mothers can be drawn to repeat pregnancies for a number of reasons, with some finding the experience so satisfying they choose to become surrogates.

Diane G. Sanford, a psychologist and author specializing in women's reproductive mental health, said while she doesn't know much about Nadya Suleman's background, women that have obsessive-compulsive disorder can become fixated on different obsessions.

"Her obsession centers around children, having children and being a mother," she said. "To what degree are her esteem and identity based on being a mom, and why has this from a young age been such a preoccupation of hers?"

Yolanda Garcia, 49, of Whittier, said she helped care for Nadya Suleman's autistic son three years ago.

"From what I could tell back then, she was pretty happy with herself, saying she liked having kids and she wanted 12 kids in all," Garcia told the Long Beach Press-Telegram.

"She told me that all of her kids were through in vitro, and I said 'Gosh, how can you afford that and go to school at the same time?'" she added. "And she said it's because she got paid for it."

Garcia said she did not ask for details.

Nadya Suleman holds a 2006 degree in child and adolescent development from California State University, Fullerton, and as late as last spring she was studying for a master's degree in counseling, college spokeswoman Paula Selleck told the Press-Telegram.

Her fertility doctor has not been identified. Her mother told the Los Angeles Times all the children came from the same sperm donor but she declined to identify him.

Birth certificates reviewed by The Associated Press identify a David Solomon as the father for the four oldest children. Certificates for the other children were not immediately available.

Angela Suleman told reporters Friday that doctors implanted far fewer than eight embryos, but they multiplied. Experts said this could be possible since Nadya Suleman's system has likely been hyperstimulated for years with fertilization treatments and drugs.

The news that the octuplets' mother already had six children sparked an ethical debate. Some medical experts were disturbed to hear that she was offered fertility treatment, and troubled by the possibility that she was implanted with so many embryos.

"You should always shoot for one," said Dr. Marcelle Cedars, a professor and director of reproductive health at the University of California, San Francisco, Medical Center, who worried about the increased risk of potential health complications for the babies.

Others worried that she would be overwhelmed trying to raise so many children and would end up relying on public support.

"This woman could not comprehend the ramifications of having eight children of the same age at the same time," said Judith Horowitz, a Parkland, Fla.-based psychologist and author who works with couples on fertility issues. "After Pampers stops delivering the free diapers, then what?"

The eight babies _ six boys and two girls _ were delivered by cesarean section weighing between 1 pound, 8 ounces and 3 pounds, 4 ounces. Forty-six physicians and staff assisted in the deliveries.

I think it is absolutely wonderful for a woman to want to be a mother and have as many children as she wants, as long as she is in a stable and ideal situation. Yes, there are many single parents out there who are single for different reasons. Some couldn't be helped (i.e. death of spouse). However, I can't comprehend intentionally getting pregnant knowing that my kids won't have that needed father figure and that I don't have the means to support them. My husband could loose his well paying job, but at least we didn't have our son with "no means". This is the land of opportunity, but opportunity does not mean foolish. We must be wise with our opportunties.

this sounds a bit suspicious:

"She told me that all of her kids were through in vitro, and I said 'Gosh, how can you afford that and go to school at the same time?'" she added. "And she said it's because she got paid for it."

IVF is expensive. but suleman claims that she was being paid to do this. ??? perhaps a detail that AP should investigate further.

This woman is crazy and potentially dangerous. The article mentions her obsession with children as an obsessive-compulsive disorder. She will very likely have done and will continue to do psychological damage to her 14 children, and damage to the state's and county's budgets. Another frightening part is the damage she could do as a counselor. She holds a 2006 degree in child and adolescent development from California State University, Fullerton, and as late as last spring she was studying for a master's degree in counseling. Someone must stop her from breeding, and from counseling others!

First off, most children in America are raised by a single parent. Why are we judging Nadya so harshly when single parenting is the experience of most kids in America?

Second, isn't this the land of liberty? Why is a woman not have the freedom to bear lots of children if they love and want them?

Third, are all of us parents absolutely sure of how we'll pay all of our children's expenses when we get pregnant? Probably not. Parenthood is a leap of faith--financially, emotionally, and otherwise.

I'm certain that Nadya will find a way to create a loving environment for her children and provide them what they need--and building a community of supporters sounds like the wisest way to do so. I'm not so quick to judge this woman.

This is NOT the typical parent experience. To compare her with the typical parent/ child does a great disjustice to the typical single parent. A single parent raising one, two, three children-- that's a struggle in itself: financially, emotionally, etc. But to raise 14 children, and to clearly not be able to do so even financially, let alone give all these children the parenting and attention they each individually deserve... is rediculous. So what if a single woman wants to have a child or two-- cannot or does not want to find a mate. Whatever. But 14... and to need public financial assistance to do so? Rediculous.

WOW, another person completely out of touch with reality... The fact is that this woman is living off of taxpayers (public assistance) and clearly can not afford to take care of the children she had much less 8 more. It isn't clear how she paid for the IVF as this procedure is extremely expensive but this is definitely an abuse of the public welfare system and she is the perfect example of the problems plaguing our society, not to mention economy.

I am completely disgusted with Nadya Suleman as well as the fertility doctor and clinic that would do this! What fertility doctor (and clinic) in their right mind would allow someone who already has 6 children - all through IVF - the opportunity to add 8 more children to their life. She cannot even provide for the 6 children that she currently has. No job, no child support, no nothing!! The government and other organizations should not be assisting this woman with her crusade to continue with her craziness. If they do, they are only promoting others do follow in her shoes. She should really be evaluated by professionals. The children will be the ones to suffer in the end. She is a very selfish, narsicisstic woman who needs help and these children, all 14 of them deserve to be in loving homes, not in her crazy life.

I would like to know who allowed this to happen besides Nadya Suleman. Between Nadya Suleman and these people, they should be required to pay for these 8 additional children for the rest of their childhood and not the government and tax payers. It is absolutely disgusting at how selfish she is as well as this doctor and clinic...I bet all of them were trying to get a little of the spot light for themselves. Again, in the end, it's the children who will suffer.

Many women want to love their children and have a loving family. But explain to me how one woman can love 14 children equally and give them the attention that they deserve AND have enough money to provide them with food, housing, and clothing? In one of her interviews, Nadya stated that she was "giving herself to her children and loving them" but part of being a good parent is being a responsible parent. If a mother cannot provide legitimately for her children, especially if they are so young and in such a critical life stage, then she is NOT being a good mother. No matter how you spin it. She claims that once she finishes school she will be able to pay for them. Ok, let's look at this logically, the average baby under 5 costs approximately $7,000 give or take. Multiply that by 14 children and it's at least $98,000 per year. And that cost increases as they get older. How will she pay for college? She did not think this through and is not a good mother. She cannot be compared to Angelina Jolie because Angelina CAN provide for her children. The whole situation makes me sick. The only sympathy I feel is towards those poor babies. God help them.

Doesn't IVF cost something like $20K for one go around? How did she even afford that several times?

The IVF specialist who implanted all of the embryos in that psycho b-word and the sperm donor a/k/a father should be financially responsible for the babies. She has definately had surgery on her lips and nose but Angelina Jolie she will never be.

An unmarried irresponsible woman having children that others will pay for. It happens every day across the country. Young girls have learned if they are unmarried and have babies the State will pay for it. This is just an extra strange story, eight babies at one time, while already having seven, going through fertility to have them and having plastic surgery. Disgusting. What this story should show us is that things need to change. The issue here is that society needs to start awarding good behavior not bad behavior like we have been. We have allowed society to give to the irresponsible, teaching future generations the same bad behavior. I'm a 33 year old woman hoping to have children one day. The day I am ready no one will be there to help me pay for it because I have been responsible. I could say that's not fair either. It takes two to make a baby, right? A woman and a man or a woman and her doctor. If my future husband and I are responsible for making and paying for our children. Well then, Nadya and her doctor are responsible for paying for the children they created.

MOST OF YOU ARE REPEATING HEARSAY. THE STORIES ARE CHANGING HOURLY ABOUT HER. I'M AMAZED AT HOW MUCH THE PUBLIC HAS TOUCHED ON THE SKELETONS IN HER CLOSET. I KEEP HEARING ABOUT THE STATE OF CA. PAYING FOR HER TO RAISE HER CHILDREN. CORRECT ME IF I'M WRONG, BUT ISN'T CA PAYING FOR MILLIONS OF ILLEGALS FOR HEALTH CARE -FOOD-SCHOOL-MEDICAL-PRISONS ETC. BILLIONS OF DOLLARS, WHERE IS ALL THE HYPE ABOUT THAT? SURE 14 KIDS IS A LOT TO TAKE CARE OF BY YOURSELF BUT REALLY, SAYING HER KIDS WILL GROW UP TO BE WORTHLESS NON WORKING BUMS. LOOK AROUND THE INNER CITY PEOPLE. HUGE FAMILIES ON WELFARE LIVING WITH THE BOYFRIEND ( OR FATHER) AND FRAUDING THE GOV. IF OPRAH WANTS TO PAY HER 2 MILLION FOR AN INTERVIEW GREAT. THEN THE STATE WON'T HAVE TO SUPPORT HER. OPRAH CAN AFFORD IT.

First off, IVF should not be given to anybody unless they prove they can afford the child(ren).

Its getting rediculous that all these families think they can have dozens of children and just get the media or TLC channel to follow their family around. Look at John and Kate Plus 8, or the 17 and counting show. Its families like those that are making people think they can do it too.

It isnt fair that the rest of the people who actually have jobs, have to get a huge chunk of our pay checks taken out to take care of their kids because theyre too irresponsible to think of anyone other then themselfs. Those poor kids now are forced to grow up with a single mother (who may or may not be mentally stable taking care of 14 kids alone) and more then likely without any opportunities that a regular family could afford.

The fact that this woman put herself before her 6 previous children by spending money that could have been spent on aiding to take care of them sickens me. Plastic surgery and more IVF? Come on now. If she is that selfish, she doesnt deserve to have 1 child led alone a village full!

There is something very wrong with this. This woman clearly needs mental help and her parents need financial assistance. The victims are the children and the grandparents. She needs to be undergoing mental treatment and her doctor needs to be stripped of his license to practice in the medical field.

The physician who implanted the embryos needs to be thrown under the jail. What this doctor did was unconscionable and he should never be allowed to work in the health field again.

Wonderful, women like Nadya Suleman place their own so called “rights” above the rights of the children and the society as a whole. None of her children elected to be born disabled into a single mother household (apparently, three of her children were already disabled) without a father. Needless to say, most of her children will likely suffer a great deal in childhood and adulthood and have severe psychological problems stemming from lack of self worth and the realization about how they were brought into life.

I am a healthcare provider and am appalled at the choices this woman and her physician have made. Aside from the obvious taxpayer and/or insurance burden of 8 infants in the neonatal intensive care unit, I question this woman's mental capacity and her physician's motives having made such a selfish and obviously short-sighted choice. Without contributing to the wave of controversial issues about her mental health, disability payments, lack of financial independence, that have surfaced this last week, suffice it to say that any woman with such an obviously surgically altered face and perfectly manicured and likely synthetic nails, is not really equipped to handle the task ahead. Ironically enough, nurses are not allowed to have synthetic nails in the neonatal intensive care unit due to the risk of transmission of certain types of fungal infections to premature infants, yet here is Ms. Suleman, handling all eight of her children on national television. While I can appreciate the desire to become a mother, and have compassion for those with infertility issues, there is such a thing as "going too far."

The Wikipedia article states that Nadya said the following clinic impregnated her. Is this true?
