EcoWonk caught the environmental "message" in this week's Saturday Night Live "Chewable Pampers" sketch:

To date, disposable diaper manufacturers of the mainstream have yet to display much concern about what happens to their products in the waste stream: there's not only dioxin from bleaching, but also the virgin pulp from 250,000 trees per year landfilled to the tune of 3.5 million tons along with untreated sewage.

If we all had to eat what we wasted, it'd be a different world.

I live in a community where the cellulose is made from pine trees for Pampers (P&G's) disposable diapers. The process results in serious air & water contamination with many toxics including organochlorines, mercury, dioxins & furans. Disposable diapers are a serious environmental problem from unsustainable forestry methods used to grow the trees, clear-cutting and regrowing them intensive-plantation style -- to the processing of the wood fiber to make the cellulose for use in the diapers, on to transportation (greenhouse gas creation) then to their disposal into landfills. Every time you use one on a baby's sensitive skin, your baby is exposed to an organochlorine/dioxin contaminated product. Cloth diapers are a much better choice.
The P&G/Buckeye pulp mill in Perry, FL has caused dioxin & mercury fish contamination, gronudwater contamination (drinking water), air (our air is the 57th worst in the nation), 2 species of gender-bent fish, 3 species of deformed insects, the complete ruin of the Fenholloway River & many springs,10 sqquare miles of dead seagrasses in the Gulf of Mexico. Since 1954 when the mill opened, this still continues today without proper attention or action from the FL Dept of Environmental Protection, the EPA, & other governmental agencies.
It's such a serious on-going situation that we need something to laugh about occasionally, & this video clip is just sooooo appropriate! Thank you Saturday Night Live & the Huffington Post for making this available.!

And by the way. I have twelve canvas tote bags in the trunk of my car. I take them into the grocery store and they pack my groceries in them. The next time I go to my car I take them and put them back in the trunk. The bags were only a dollar each but you could make your own. We could all do it and dispense with the plastic and paper bags.

But seriously....it is time we all demand a biodegradeable diaper made from recycled fibers. It can be done.

That was NOT funny, it was disgusting. This is what humor has come down to? Making people throw up?
