I Like ItI Don’t Like It

A 163-page document containing a list of people and companies that invested with Bernard Madoff's firm was released Wednesday in a court filing. The list was compiled by AlixPartners of Dallas, Texas.

As the AP notes, "Some investors are listed multiple times, presumably because they had multiple accounts."

More specifics on the document's contents from the New York Times' Dealbook blog:

The list includes anyone who responded to advertisements placed by the trustee overseeing the bankruptcy of the firm. Not every name on the list is necessarily a victim of Mr. Madoff's reputed $50 billion Ponzi scheme, but the list includes "everyone who might have an interest in the bankruptcy case," according to a person briefed on the document.

The list includes trading partners and other customers that have accounts with the brokerage arm of Mr. Madoff's firm and the investment management division.

Scroll down for slideshow on some of Madoff's more famous victims.

Thoroughly possessed by the spirit of greed. No morals, no scruples, nothing resembling a conscience. That he could pull this off over a period of years constantly being prompted by his greed. Not even Steven Spielberg recognized such great acting.

"Madoff Victims List Released"

Victims? VICTIMS?

Did they/we consider them "victims" when they were investing
hundreds of thousands of dollars and they were thinking they
were going to get richer when Madoff paid off?

Victims? Really?
What a quaint point of view.

It seems to me that this hit the wealthy like the economy hit the bottom of the economy. Everyone in every country is touched by this. We all need to get back to basics. It will be interesting if morality makes a comeback.

I must thank Mr. Harry Markopolos, an independent financial fraud investigator, & who testified on my birthday on the hill.

A couple of years ago, I use to wonder why the SEC would not hire me, with a 20 year accounting career & an award winning contract auditor from the Dept of Defense.

Now I do not have to wonder any more!

Caveat emptor .... buyer aware! People got complacent & greedy and, many put all their eggs in one basket controlled by one person. DUMB! Steady, solid returns over decades despite the markets ups & downs .... if it sounds to be too good to be true, it probably is. I feel bad for all these people and charities that lost money .... but they didn't use their common sense or they would have smelled something fishy. If you don't understand how something works, stay away!

I'm sorry to bring this up, but does anyone else think Madoff looks like George Washington. It's just kinda funny to me, George Washington, father of our country, and Bernie Madoff, face of ecomonic collapse. It's funnny how the universe works.

Thank you for mentioning that you think Madoff looks like George Washington. I am definitely in sync with your thoughts. In fact, the resemblance appears so striking to me, that I experience a cognitive dissonance each time I see a photo of Madoff.

He should not be living in a luxurious life style while some of his victim... including a 90 year old man had to go back to work...

I was trying to process the information from the PDF into something I could stuff into a spreadsheet or database (so I can compare addresses and names.) Cut-and-paste from the PDF into just about anything looses the tabular information. I've had some luck with a "perl" script extracting state and zip code information, and a less luck extracting city names. Does anyone have any suggestions?

One thing I did notice from the PDF is that the format for the addresses is very non-uniform. The same address will show up as:

P O BOX 2220
P O BOX 2220
PO BOX 2220

Which helps hide some of this from automated analysis.

Is this simply typographical errors on the part of AlixPartners of Texas? Or typographic errors on the part of Madoff? Or attempts by either to hide certain connections for favored clients? (I've got by tin-foil beanie on here, suspecting conspiracies where simple incompetence will do.)

The most reliable and fastest way is to get two data entry people to do it for you. It's possible to source this very cheaply if you look online - the service can be anywhere and a couple of students in India will thick they've struck gold for very reasonable rates.

The process to use is two separate people doing the entire list, you then compare the two separate spreadsheets to locate data entry errors.

The whole process will be cheap and only take a day or two - whereas using scripts will take a while (as you may be finding) and have numerous errors.

Speaking of errors are the dodgy fields there because of cock-up or conspiracy. Generallyt its cock-up and in the case most definitely.

Sometimes conspiracy theorists have theories because there are conspiracies involved. There are so many Ponzi schemes coming to light these days. How's that GOP free market, no regulation thing going?

"Nobel laureate Elie Wiesel's charity organization, Foundation For Humanity, reportedly had $10 million tied up in Madoff's organization."

Wow, Madoff had not a single scruple--stealing a Holocaust survivor's charity organization funding? What staggering lack of conscience...

Why isn't Bernie Madoff in jail? Really. Seriously.

$50 billion and he is still eating dinner in his own house?

The message is if I steal big enough I don't go to county jail

Somebody please put this guy in jail. Now.

Different rules apply to the rich, now if you go and rob a 7-eleven and net $83.57 bet you ass you'd be locked up. Remember the rich convicted guy that was suppose to drive himself to prison and turn himself in-but didn't? Remember?

Whose going to put George Washington (or a look-alike) in the klink?

I'm curious about whether they've really interdicted his communications, after that fiasco where he started mailing various pieces of jewelry out to friends and family. Has his telegraph been taken away from him?

(Do you really thing there isn't an open wireless network within range of some part of his apartment?)

Well, if his name was Leroy Washington, and he stole $60, he'd definitely be in jail. But steal $50 BILLION and we wouldn't want you to be uncomfortable...

I feel no pain for world trade center Silverstein. I hope he lost his drawers, the crook! All of these people knew they were getting something for almost nothing and they took it anyway. That's greed and greed is a sin. I believe they all got what they deserved.

this has probably been said many times but this supposed complete list of victims is useless as it isn't alphabetized by anything useful. first names, account prefixes (joint account for ...), titles (Dr., etc.) are mixed in with last names, etc. the fact that often home addresses are also given strikes me as an invasion of privacy (maybe the list itself is) yet without being what it purports to be (a list that can be used to determine if someone was a victim).

It isn't entirely useless, and I've had *some* luck reprocessing it - I'm sure that confidence tricksters are thrilled to have such a list of potential victims. But since I don't have any legitimate (or illegitimate) use for it, I've grown bored with turning it into a list so that names and addresses can be compared. (Why? Cause suffer the character flaw of being nosy about things that really don't affect me. I should consider myself lucky that I'm not affected by this.)

If I was really ambitious, I'd cross-check the (real) addresses against any online property/tax assessment databases (Michigan counties and cities make this information available on-line -- I don't know about other states, but it shouldn't be hard to find.) I'd also check against the realestate MLS (multiple listing services.) And lastly, just for chuckles, I'd check against various sex-crimes databases (yes, I know that those databases are horribly inaccurate.)

Damitall, I'm unemployed and trying to keep my skills up.
