WHITTIER, Calif. — The veil of secrecy octuplets' mother Nadya Suleman shrouded herself in for more than a week was lifted Thursday with the release of public documents showing that the 33-year-old struggled with depression for years until she finally began to realize her childhood dream of having a huge family.

Suleman, who now has 14 children, told doctors she battled with depression for years after she was injured in a riot in 1999 at the state mental hospital where she worked.

The doctors' reports were included in more than 300 pages of documents released to The Associated Press by the state Division of Workers' Compensation on the same day NBC released excerpts of Suleman's first interview since giving birth last month. Among other things, the documents reveal that Suleman collected more than $165,000 in disability payments between 2002 and 2008 for an injury she said left her in near-constant pain and helped end her marriage.

Meanwhile, Suleman told NBC what her mother and others have said since the octuplets were born: that she always wanted a huge family to make up for the isolation she felt as an only child.

"That was always a dream of mine, to have a large family, a huge family," she said. "I just longed for certain connections and attachments with another person that ... I really lacked, I believe, growing up."

In the interview _ scheduled to air on the "Today" show Monday and again Tuesday on "Dateline" _ Suleman calls her childhood "pretty dysfunctional."

In the state report, however, doctors indicate she had a happy childhood. She told them she was an above-average high school student, enjoyed being a cheerleader, had many friends and stayed out of trouble. She said her parents were loving and supportive.

As an adult, however, she said she often battled depression as she struggled to get pregnant and particularly after her injury.

In the report, Suleman told a doctor she had three miscarriages. Another doctor disputed that number, saying she had two ectopic pregnancies, a dangerous condition in which a fertilized egg implants somewhere other than in the uterus. She told NBC she struggled for seven years before finally giving birth to her first child in 2001 through in vitro fertilization.

She told a doctor who conducted a psychological evaluation for a workers' compensation claim that the first birth was "the most wonderful, best thing that's ever happened in my life."

Suleman said all her children have been born through in vitro fertilization, with sperm donated from a friend. The first six range in age from 2 to 7. The octuplets are doing fine, said officials at Kaiser Permanente's Bellflower Medical Center, where they were born Jan. 26.

According to the state documents, which were released to the AP following a public records request, Suleman was injured Sept. 18, 1999, when a riot involving nearly two dozen patients broke out in the women's ward of the Metropolitan State Hospital in Norwalk.

As she was helping other staffers restrain a patient, a desk thrown at her by another patient hit her in the back. It caused damage to her spine and left her complaining of headaches and intense pain throughout her lower body for years.

She attributed it in part to the breakup of her marriage to Marcos Gutierrez, whom she had wed in 1996. She told a psychiatrist the bouts of depression she was suffering as a result of her injury were unfair to her husband.

"I don't want to keep bringing him down. I want him to move on with his life," she told a psychiatrist.

The couple split in 2000 and divorced last year. Gutierrez has not returned calls to phone numbers listed for him, and his divorce lawyer, Roberto Gil, declined comment.

Suleman has come under criticism from TV and radio commentators, bloggers and others who accused her of irresponsibly having more children than she appears prepared to care for. Some say she had the octuplets to cash in with a TV or book deal.

Although the two publicists she hired last week acknowledge she is reviewing such offers, one of her friends said Suleman simply loves children and didn't get pregnant for profit.

"She's not even interested in that right now," said Jessica Zepeda, who lives down the street. "It's funny and sad in a way, there's a lot of people saying really negative things and they don't know her."

Suleman's mother said she expects people's opinions to change now that her daughter is going public.

"She's a very likable person," Angela Suleman said Wednesday. "She's basically normal except for this obsession she's always had with children."

She's also a good mother, Angela Suleman said.

Her daughter, who was born in Fullerton, studied to be a psychiatric technician after graduating from a high school in La Puente in 1993.

She received a bachelor's degree in child and adolescent development from California State University, Fullerton, in 2006 and was studying there for a master's degree in counseling when she became pregnant with the octuplets.

"She may not be able to finish her master's degree now and she was so close to wrapping it up," her mother said.

Publicist Mike Furtney said Nadya Suleman has told him it's her dream to eventually earn a Ph.D. in some field involving counseling.

Public records show Suleman was listed on the Metropolitan State Hospital payroll from 1997 until last year, though it appears she did little work after September 1999 because of her injury.

Furtney said Thursday that Suleman was "feeling great" and looking forward to being reunited with her octuplets, who are expected to remain in the hospital for several more weeks.

"She's happy to be out of the hospital, although she misses her children," he said. "She can't wait until they join her."

The octuplets were born nine weeks prematurely and will be released from the hospital individually as they hit a near-normal newborn weight.

"At this point in their development, they are not mature enough to coordinate the suckling and swallowing at the same time to be bottle-fed," said Dr. Mandhir Gupta, the hospital's neonatologist.

Wow - Considering Octo Mom has FOURTEEN CHILDREN UNDER the Age of Seven.

That means she's had TWO Babies a Year for the past Seven Years.

Good Grief! Is it any wonder that the Grandma said she's EXHAUSTED and that's she's used every cent of her Social Security to pay for those kids food and clothes. Not to mention, she's been a FREE Babysitter for the past Seven Years!

I wonder how much money she's made from her website so far. You can donate money or baby products. The government needs to be tracking that site.

she needs to be spayed like a stray cat and the kids taken by child protective services. My taxes will still support them, but at least they will be in better homes then.

The grandmother contradicts her own daughter. Guess who I tend to believe! Nadya claims she worked "double shifts" to earn money for the in vitro, no mention of the $167,000 award - OR her parents help. I could save alot too if I didn't have to pay for those little things like RENT OR FOOD (which her mother or parents covered).

Less importantly, overdone lips like those are gross and look deformed.

As most people know, the grandmother filed for bankruptcy. She was quoted saying "Unless [Nayda] starts working, earning money, I don’t know, she may have to go on welfare, which she said she never would do." Now it's reported that Nadya received $490 a month in food stamps and other benefits.

Angela says that her daughter never contributed rent or food money - and failed to tell her mother about more than $167,00 in worker’s compensation claims. Most importantly, Angela said she never saw any money, not for house payments or for feeding the kids. Grandma appears to be the mother of 15.

The best predictor of future behavior is.... past behavior. This wackjob might rake in the BIG bucks now. Hope it's all garnished and she, only she, is held liable for the expenses incurred by her selfishness.

I have one word for Nadya Suleman ...IRRESPONSIBLE. Where is her judgment in this situation?? Six children was not enough. Now...she has 14 children ALL under the age of 7 yrs. old.

In our current economic crisis...who is going to foot the bill for this woman's crazy dream of 14 children?? Her parents who just filed for bankruptcy...the sperm donors for the kids...or will she...after she says...she finishes her Master's degree and gets a job. In the meantime...who will pay for the daily care and upkeep of her kids?? Medicaid because she is a single mom?? Yikes...this woman is living in an alternate universe and it looks like U.S. taxppayers will be paying for it.

"Octuplets Mom Got $168G In Disability"-CBS News

The mother of newborn octuplets and six other children collected almost $168,000 in state disability payments for an on-the-job back injury that she and a doctor said was worsened by pregnancy, according to state documents released Thursday.

Nadya Suleman, 33, became pregnant with all 14 of her children after a 1999 injury during a riot at a state mental hospital where she worked, state Division of Workers' Compensation documents show.

She stopped working, but had the six older children during that time, notes Early Show correspondent Hattie Kauffman.

"There has to be some question," says CBS News Legal Analyst Trent Copeland, "about whether or not a woman who's disabled and collecting over $150,000 worth of disability payments is really authorized to receive those payments if she's too disabled to work, but not too disabled to have at least a half-dozen children."

Did anybody notice during her interview, she got very defensive about the fact that the people are just against her because she's NOT MARRIED!................Oh Yeah, That must be it..

She also said she's going to go back to College in the Fall and that she'll put her kids in Day Care.

Ummmmm............Do the Duggars have an extra Greyhound BUS to loan her?????

She better start thinking about the fact that if she DOES make any money off this deal, Welfare won't pay her a CENT because of her Huge Income..............But then at least, she could take her first MILLION and pay off KAISER!

One of the creepiest interviews I've ever seen, outside of all of W's. She would have benefitted more from intense psychiatric therapies than intense IVF therapies. And her invitro doc needs to have his license yanked for this.

As I watched this interview, she makes some very dubious assumptions. Her special-needs children won't need medication forever, she'll be able to live off her student loans(!) and no public assistance (which she's already getting for three of her children), and everything will be perfect once she goes back to school and gets a job. Very strange rationalizations.

Dear Lord, imagine what those kids are going to be like as teens and adults!

This girl takes the cake. I mean, really, the words "selfish" and "ignorant" fail to describe this train wreck of a mess.

well this is sad. she's obviously crazier than a $#!+ house rat. obviously.

so when are they gonna start stripping some doctors of their licenses?

The networks should refuse to have her on any show but instead should feature a dialogue about the risks and ethical questions involved with medical technology. The doctor or doctors who implanted the embryos should be charged with her medical bills and should also have to reimburse the government should she ever apply for welfare or food stamps. This is one SICK woman!

The @550 responses to this thread really say it all. Most of us, maybe even all of us, can't begin to understand why any doctor, any hospital, or any woman would EVER have this procedure done after having 6 children IVF. The woman is totally psychologically unfit; totally. Her distressing comments about wanting ALL her babies implanted is so sick. Surely the doctor(s) recognized that.

As someone who suffered a serious back injury, let me say that pregnancy would have only compounded the injury, not made life wonderful. And, a pregnancy with 8 fetuses would be incredibly painful for someone with a REAL back injury.
$165,000, huh? Now we know how she afforded in vitro.

I think my reply got zapped because I said she was m e ss e d up. Anyway, that $168K was paid over 6 years, making it $28K a year. Which any responsible parent would use towards supporting their existing children. Yet she chose to use a good chunk of it 4 or 5 times to pay for IVF. And she thinks she'll be able to support all 14 once she gets her degree. Who in their right mind would seek advice from someone so m e ss e d up?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:13 AM on 02/08/2009

That $168k may have been a lump sum payment awarded to her after applying for disability. There is also the possibility it was a fixed-period disability. I, myself, got disability for an 18 month period and that was it!! I received it in a lump sum so she may have gotten hers the same way but nothing after that. And, yes, this woman is clearly not a logical thinker. She's using the babies to help her with her own insecurities. What makes her think that all these babies are going to help her from feeling lonely?
