I Like ItI Don’t Like It

Carlos Mencia was pulled from a celebrity Mardi Gras event for comments he made during a stand-up routine about Katrina victims. Details of the story are available below. This comes on the heels of Carol Carter, a Republican state committeewoman, resigning over an email she sent that mirror's Mencia's sentiments:

"I'm Confused. How can 2,000,000 blacks get into Washington, DC in 1 day in sub zero temps when 200,000 couldn't get out of New Orleans in 85 degree temps with four days notice?"

Here's the video of Mencia's routine that caused the flap:

From the AP:

NEW ORLEANS -- Comedian Carlos Mencia was yanked Thursday from a Mardi Gras parade's list of celebrity riders for jokes made about Hurricane Katrina.

That's according to Krewe of Orpheus officials who on Wednesday announced Mencia as one of about a dozen celebrity guests slated to ride in this year's parade, which rolls through New Orleans on Feb. 23, the night before Mardi Gras.

But Orpheus Captain Sonny Borey said in a statement Thursday that the club became aware of "certain remarks Mr. Carlos Mencia has made in regards to New Orleans and Hurricane Katrina."

Borey said Mencia would not be riding because "our krewe is very sensitive to the feelings of our community and the way our city is viewed."

Borey did not provide details about what the comic said, but a clip of Mencia making jokes about Katrina victims in a standup routine can be found on the Web site YouTube.

Besides riding on one of the parade's 35 floats, Mencia had been scheduled to perform at the Orpheus ball after the parade.

Meanwhile, added to the celebrity list of riders Thursday was comic and television star Joan Rivers.

Borey said Rivers is not a replacement for Mencia.

"This is something that we've been working on for a while, and we are really excited we can finally announce it," he said.

Joining Rivers as a celebrity monarch will be ABC's "According to Jim" star Jim Belushi and AMC's "Mad Men" star Bryan Batt. Also riding are former "American Idol" contestant Josh Gracin, daytime TV stars Christian LeBlanc of "The Young and the Restless" and Ricky Paull Goldin of "All My Children," and the cast of the TV comedy series "Reno 911."

Mencia is no funny.
He take the easiest and cheapest road to laughter: Ethnic jokes.
He joked about blacks, asians, middle easterners, etc...
And he steals most of his jokes and repeats them word for word. Google it!
Next time you watch him on CC, mute the TV and you discover the secret to his success: He walks and wiggles funny.

I've never found him funny. He steals jokes, too.

He is so not funny! I hate his comedy. He always tries to act like he is stupid. I just find him annoying.

Carlos Mencia only sees people for their race. I get real tired of hearing him running through his list of racial epithets. His kind of bigotry is old, tired and not at all funny. He bores me.

Can't he see that they think it is funny to shut him out of Mardi Gras for being too offensive? What's the matter? Can't he take a joke?! Dee dee deeeee!

In the BROADEST sense of the word, Mencia is a comedian but then again, like millions of others, so am I after a few drinks.

This time he went too far. People died in the Katrina fiasco and some survivors are still suffering and for him to joke about it makes him worse than the buffoon he is. It makes him an insensitive putz.

The man is all about tired, stolen jokes rehashed over and over in his lame routines again but worse, he is all about race. Sure, he mask the racism in his "humor" with the obligatory "equal opportunity offender" defense but his comic stink shows right through.

Bottom line, he's a hackneyed boor and has been for the last 4 years and they should have never considered him to be in the parade in the first place..

It took those 2,000,000 blacks 233 years to get to washington, not one day.

Good God people, he's a comedian not a politician. He makes money from getting laughs, and he makes fun of his own kind quite a bit as well. Black comedians have been doing the same for decades, so grow up, if you don't like his act don't watch him, he's made his millions so he must have done something right. For people to say he's not funny is absurd.

You're right, Mencia can say whatever he wants no matter how unfunny. By the same token, Krewe of Orpheus (whatever that is), can have whoever they want at their event. As you say yourself, "if you don't like his act don't watch": Orpheus obviously doesn't, so they won't.

By the way, Mexican is also my "own kind," and most of my family and friends consider Mencia an embarrassment. Then again, humor is a subjective thing.

Yeah, he may be a comedian and not a politician.

BUT MENCIA ISN'T FUNNY!

How long did it take for 9/11 jokes to be okay? I'm sure in NYC it's still touchy, as Katrina humor is in the NO area.It was about a dy or two before I started hearing Challenger jokes in the Houston area.

Carlos Mencia's not even funny. They should've asked George Lopez in the first place.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:24 PM on 02/07/2009

Motion seconded. George is funny. Carlos has some good IDEAS but George is funny. He should apply for the secretary of making the president laugh cabinet post if Obama's still hiring.
Just make sure you've paid your taxes George.
ALL of them.

I find Mencia sooo UNFUNNY. The so called joke wasn't that offensive t me, but I don't live there so I don't know they're pain. Comedy does not allow you to be stupid and insensitvive. He's not very smart, there are a lot of angry people down there. George Lopez, is really funny.

As far as Mencia insulting his own, it's a lot easier to do that than the opposite.

One trick pony

'De da dit' got old about five years ago Carlos

Why don't you make fun of someone who deserves it. Like the government?

Too complicated?

Borey said Mencia would not be riding because "our krewe is very sensitive to the feelings of our community and the way our city is viewed."

They don't want Mencia to remind people that the government has screwed Katrina victims, and has yet to make things right. The joke is funny at first, then makes you think about the nightmare these people lived, and in some cases, are still living, all thanks to the gov.
They decided not to rebuild some areas so they basically are using this catastrophe to eliminate the rights of the impoverished. See link

http://blog.aflcio.org/2007/10/19/a-disposable-workforce-in-new-orleans-after-katrina/

Why wouldn't all those people get on a bus? Cuz they had nowhere to go...the storm didn't displace them, the government levees did. I say sue the government, and I hope every one of those victims receives their due...

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 01:39 PM on 02/07/2009

THEY DIDN'T GET ON A BUS BECAUSE THERE WERE NO BUSES AVAILABLE FOR EVACUATION.

Yes, I am yelling.

There were buses, at your own expense, of course. Not government funded buses, like there should have been, as you imply.
